I hate when I first meet people and I am introduced to them as Samantha and they immediately start calling me Sam...Did I say they could do that???

It's rude is it not?

Everyone here on the DIS can call me Sam as I did introduce myself as Sam with my user name and you all feel like family.;)

If I meet a Michael, I don't call him Mike unless he tells me to.

I had an employee this Summer named Christine. I call her Christine...She recently told me that she usually is called Chris...I can't do it yet, but I will if she wants me to.

So my question is...IS THIS RUDE?

Heck, DH calls me Samantha most of the time. I love it.

It is, but I know I'm guilty of it too. I'm sorry. :)

I have never told anyone, ever - that my name is "Cat"

And kid you not, every single person I know calls me 'Cat'

I dont answer the phone "This is Cat" - when they ask my name, I dont say "Cat" - I say Cathryn.

Cathryn.

Cathryn.

Cathryn.

:confused3

We have a Katie here at work - they dont call her "Kay"

We have a Janis - they dont call her "Jan"

I have no idea. :confused3

I think it's a bit presumptuous. People do it to me all the time. I introduce myself as WayneTwentyThree and they automatically call me Wayne. It doesn't bother me too much, though.

I feel that way with my name and I am just a Kelly... this girl at work - who I do not know - calls me KEL. My friends and family call me Kel!

My husband is the same way - he is Robert. Not Rob, not Bobby - Robert.
People always call him Rob.... it is like nails on a chalkboard.

I use a nickname of my middle name at work - Cate. There is one guy here who alwyas calls me "Cat" or "Catie." Or he'll call me by my full first name, Elizabeth, or "Beth." He NEVER calls me Cate. He's the only one that does it.

:confused3

My DH is a RICHARD not a Rich, Rick or Dick...RICHARD!!!

I hate it when people try to give you a nickname that really does not fit.

DH is a Patrick, and I DESPISE it when people call him Pat. His parents and siblings, that's fine. They called him that when he was a kid, so they get a pass. The loan officer doing our mortgage? Not ok. His brother's wife? Not ok. I don't call him that. He doesn't want to be called that, I haven't known him since he started making people use his full name, so I think those of us that haven't known him since he started using the adult form of his name should CALL HIM HIS FULL NAME.

I'm a Courtney, so I rarely have this problem. A few people call me Court, but I don't really have people shorten my name. My parents selected my name because they didn't want my name to have a nickname. They did pretty well! My mom hated being Sandy (for Sandra).

Dh's name is Patrick... we call him Patrick.. I HATE the name Pat.. yet when werid people call on the phone usually stupid call they ask for Pat.. I have started to say.. i'm sorry no Pat lives here but there is a Patrick or I'm sorry his name is Patrick not Pat.. I can't help it annoys me and its not even MY name! DD1's "real" name is Abigail but we NEVER call her that.. we introduce her as Abby.. because that's what she goes by... please dont call her Abigail she doesn't even know that's her name. I wish I could go back and just put Abby on her birth certificate!

I have the same problem - in reverse! My name is Joy and people always ask, "Is that short for Joyce?" Umm, no . . .

Hello, did I say Joyce?

They are both only one syllable, so why would you need to shorten Joyce to Joy? :confused3

Weird....Like same time, same post....

This happens to me, too. I'm known on the internet as Val, but in real life I'm Valerie. I have never introduced myself as Val-- and never would.

But everyone insists on calling me that! It is presumptuous and rude. I would never do that to someone else. :confused3

I go through this all the time too.
My name is Stefanie and people will call me Stef - which I HATE!
I will say, "Hi, my name is Stefanie." And the response, is "Hi, nice to meet you Stef." :headache:

Drives me nuts!

My daughter's name is Samantha and I hate the fact her teachers all call her Sam.....!

I hate that too!

There are really only two people in my life (DH and my BF) that I've ever allowed to call me Mel. I don't even really like them doing it lol.

But people I meet often seem to assume it is ok.

Case in point at work we had someone in doing training and she asked me to give her everyone's names. I indicated myself as Melissa and then went round the room. Later in the session she asked me a question "Mel... something something". I just said, as politely as possible (;)), "Melissa" and then answered her question.

I'm sorry but I just don't think its on.

cya,
Gaspodé

Ugh, I hate that and I find it very presumptuous.
My name is Elisabeth, I cringe anytime someone calls me "Liz".

I think it's a control thing...like when you try and get a toddler to eat vegetables. The kid will refuse just for the sake of refusing, to let you know that you can't boss them around.

Maybe people think that if they call you by a nickname then you will like them better or remember them more??? This day and age, it seems that "knowing people" and "making connections" in a business sense is more and more important. However, it would seem that using a correct name would be more businesslike.

Personally, I NEVER assume anything and always address the person with the name that I have been given. If that's what they want to be called, fine with me! I know of a guy whose initials are W.C. Lastname, and he goes by Gary. Where does "Gary" come from? I don't know, but I'm not going to start calling him by his first given name just because it is "proper"!

Thankfully I have not run into the problem to often. My name is Theresa and once in blue moon, someone would call me Terri and I would correct them and tell them that I go by my given name. In high school, I did have the nickname of Tursa. For some reason that did not bother me. Some of the station commanders at work do call me Miss T or Miss Theresa.

We have the opposite situation. DW's name is Barbara, goes by Barb, introduces herself as Barb, I call her Barb. Everyone she meets calls her Barbara. We've only noticed it since we moved to Arkansas, maybe it's a southern thing... :confused3
