Does YOUR House "Talk" To You, Too?

I am all alone tonight in this house, and I just turned off the TV and nothing else is running to so everything is dead silent, and this house just WILL NOT shut up!

It's creaking and moaning, and I swear I just heard some water running in the basement (probably it's the humidifier draining, but could be a ghost washing it's hands in the bathroom?)

Don't you just hate house noise when you are all alone? Any good stories?

I hear noises sometimes. I can swear someone is in the house and after I walk through it there isn't another soul here.

Very early this morning I was downstairs in my craft room painting another project and the only other person in the house was my DD - who was still sound asleep..

I came upstairs to get another cup of coffee and as I turned the corner to go downstairs I heard all of this racket coming from the utility room - where the furnace/ac and hot water heater are located.. I swear it sounded like someone had one of those old red wagons that kids used to play with and was rolling it all over the concrete floor.. I've never heard it before (I've been down there every single day since Christmas) and meant to ask my Dson-in-law about it tonight, but I forgot..

I've also noticed that when the family goes away for the weekend I hear strange thumping/banging noises - along with the sound of water running somewhere.. I don't have a clue what the noises are, but since everything is locked up tight and I know nothing is malfunctioning, it doesn't really bother me..

Is your house newly built? If so, it could just be the house "settling" - which can go on for years and years.. Even my place at the lake still creaks and moans - and it was built in 1952!!! LOL..

Nope! Built in '54!!!

It is just so funny, how loud a house can be when it is so quiet!

I have a dog so I am never(well very rarely) home alone. Also if Maggie(my black lab) does here something...say a neighbour 3 houses down close a car door, she is up and checking it out...lol
If your house is new it will shrink and settle. This is caused by the top and bottom plates of wooden stud walls shrinking. Each inch and a half thick plate shrinks about an eighth of an inch. If you add them all up from the bottom to the top floor this can be several inches at times depending on the building style. If your house is old then it will just creak and crack because the nails don't hold as well as they once did.
If you can show me a completely silent house, I will eat my hat!
