Lived in So Cal for years, have been in the rain in Oregon for 18 years. We make a yearly trek to DL and spend 3-5 days at the park, 3 this year-5 last year. We gather at DSILs for a family barbeque/swim party one day so we can see whatever relatives/friends are interested in seeing us. Then we do one late afternoon/evening at Corona Del Mar beach for another family-friend beachday/hotdog roast. Nothing quite like hotdogs with sand in them! 
Our main focus is DL/DCA and our family/friends there know us well and accept that. Even having lived there for years we avoid the driving as much as we can.
