Does anybody know anything about Mary Kay?

Certainly give it a try if you feel you want to but PLEASE look into what exactly is in the start up kit and how much more you'll have to invest. I've had too many friends get burned by these type of things. When they have to have so much on stock for their customers who don't order until they're out of what ever and want it TODAY! Then they end up losing a bunch of money trying to get rid of it when they want out. Just be careful, ok?:D

See, the recruiter that I was talking to knew I wasn't comfortable with high pressure sales but she said that in the specific area of town I live in it would be pretty easy to sell (with all of the college students here) and to just talk to people in my classes about it.

college students spending thier extra money in MaryKay? It was not on the top of my list while in college but then I have never been a MaryKay fan.

This doesn't make sense to me. I mean, first of all, college students generally don't have all that much disposable income. Second of all, sorry if this offends anybody - but isn't Mary Kay sort of considered "old lady" makeup? I mean, all those pink containers. Don't younger people use "hipper" products (MAC, Aveda, Origins, etc.)

I agree with Blondie - I just keep coming back to Clinique. I love their skin care products.

another big fan of clinique here. i started using their 7 day facial scrub about 4 months ago and i love it!

The only skin care product I use is Noxema. I love Clinique make up. It lasts forever too.....I only buy foundation every 4-5 months. They usually have pretty good free gifts during "Bonus Days". :)

Clinique user here too. However I just found a product by Oil of Olay that is fantastic! it's only $17. It's called Total Effects, visible anti-aging vitamin complex. I've been using it twice a day for a month and really see a difference in the little lines around my eyes. You use it in place of any moisturizers or night creams.

Becki, be careful of Mary Kay. I really don't think college students are into that line of cosmetics and even though she's fronting you the money, you'd have to pay it back eventually. She's getting credit for signing you up no matter if you sell or not, so she may say whatever it takes to get you on board.

My Boss sells Mary Kay. The funny thing is that she doesn't push you at all.

I have extremely dry skin and she told me she would being something in to have me try it.

I liked it and that's when she told me she could sell me some.

If you want to get the Grand Am in a day then yeah you have to be pushy. But she wasn't that way at all.

I even got a discount on it as well. (as with all other future purchases if I make anymore)

Becki,
Be careful of the inventory deal. You could order the minium and then if you don't have what someone wants then you find another consultant and trade out or owe her. Also, if you are selling out of that ladies inventory, you will either owe her the money or the product to replenish her stock. Just be very careful.

Another opinion from the peanut gallery. I agree with everyone else that you have to be careful and not buy too much inventory, but I sold for a while and I thought it was a great company. Yes, there are pushy saleswomen, but aren't there pushy people in pretty much all sales positions? If it's something you really want to try, go for it, just don't buy a lot of inventory before you make alot of sales! (voice of experience!)
BTW, my rep is a director now and has a car and is not pushy, I think it's great you can get ahead on your own time and terms!

I LOVE their products. I have lots of allergies, and these are the first cosmetics I have come upon without any problems for me. My sales person is not at all pushy. She calls me about once every 2-3 months, and I order about that often. Sometimes I call her before she has called me.

There was movie on last week with Shirley MacLaine starring as Mary Kay and it was a very interesting insight into the whole Mary Kay empire..

What I would do is if you would like to sell cosmetics, I would get my feet wet working in retail...maybe for Estee Lauder, who owns everything now..at least you would get an hourly wage and commission...

I am not a hard sell person and found it difficult doing Mary Kay.. I did it years ago, got suckered in and absolutely hated it.. I do think the product is decent..but you asked, so I am telling you... I have an esthetician's licence and am non practicing right now.. I have worked for Estee Lauder and would recommend if cosmetics is your thing, starting in retail where you have a secured salary...One more thing, women, vanity, and customer service can be difficult...Good luck..

I am a MK consultant for about 2 yrs. now. BUT, I didn't start with any inventory. I went into it for personal use. My start up kit was $50 and then I received $58 dollars in free product. So I figure that's even up.:D
I tried selling and I did a couple of class, but that's not me. However I do love the products. I have some family members and my DD who also wear it. So I just order enough for us and that's it.
I would say yes it's great if you wear it and especially if you have DD's. Then you can get quality makeup 50% off. :D That's always a good deal!! But I wouldn't start with alot of inventory or any. I ordered what I used for my first order and that was it. That way I knew I wouldn't get stuck with something I'd never use. They will tell you more inventory is better. BUT, listen to yourself not them and you'll do fine. That's what I did.

Good Luck!!!!;)
