Do you think it’s safe to go on a cruise during the current situation?

We may have to cancel a trip to Aruba next week due to the possibility of being quarantined if anyone of us test positive before we leave and are looking at other last minute options. Would love to do the August 9 four night cruise but DD25 is very worried about this delta variant. How concerned would you be?

It's a pretty subjective choice and only you and your family know what risk level you are willing to take. I look around and see folks in stores not masked up, not social distanced etc. I feel like I can keep myself as safe on a cruise ship as going to Walmart, Target etc. I know DCL will enforce their protocol rules, so that is another reason I am willing to sail. We went to WDW 2x during the pandemic and saw how they enforced things.

Good luck to whatever you decide.

We just got back from WDW last week. We were there right as the cases were exploding in FL. I was definitely a little apprehensive. There was no meaningful masking in the parks, and no way of knowing if anyone was vaxxed. I think a cruise would actually be safer in that there will be testing required for those who won't provide proof of vaccination. Couple that with the current masking requirements and I think you'd be fine, especially if your party is vaxxed. BTW, we're scheduled to sail on the Wonder on Oct 1st. We have no plans to cancel.

Definitely a personal choice but we would go since we are both vaccinated.

Everyone in my household is vaccinated and no one is high risk so I'd be willing to get on a cruise ship today. Having said that, if I had anyone high risk or unvaccinated at home or in my traveling party I wouldn't be as cavalier.

I agree with @JWelch62. I was also in WDW last week and while we had a fun time, it was just as busy as normal, like nothing ever happened. Uniform masking was limited to transportation (buses/Skyliner). The indoor/attraction mask requirement restarted the morning we were leaving. I remarked that by comparison, being on a Disney cruise would have been better/cleaner/safer...which is kind of how I always felt, even before the pandemic. Our latest cruise rebooking is now for February 2022 and given what we just went through in WDW, it seems like a cruise is a smarter choice if we're going to travel.

I think it's subjective to each person's risk tolerance. People need to do what they are comfortable with. I have a SIL who just tested positive after being in a crowded place with little air circulation and she was fully vaccinated. She isn't "sick" - only symptom is loss of smell. We are all vaccinated in my immediate family - I'd get on a ship originating and ending in US. We don't have any high risk factors. We have jobs where we can work from home if we wound up positive and had to quarantine after the trip. I felt very comfortable in WDW in February. But there were others who were supposed to travel with us who were not comfortable and didn't go. Everyone needs to do their thing.

If we were all fully vaccinated, I might consider it.

BUT...
I would plan on driving immediately home and isolating for 10 days. (Or two negative tests).
And by isolating I mean not leaving the house, period.

Even if my chances of getting sick are low, I don't want to be responsible for spreading Covid anywhere.
For that reason, I wouldn't go anywhere near Florida right now either.

Which means I wouldn't do it right now.

Everyone is going to have personal reasons for their own risk level... we would cruise as we are both vaccinated and are not high risk (ok, we have asthma so I was concerned before we were vaccinated but now my hubris has grown). I'd stop going into the office prior and test before we left though, and would do the same voluntarily upon our return, just as I did when I went to Disneyland in early July. I also mostly wore my mask in crowds, inside and out, despite it not being mandated where I felt like I wasn't able to maintain social distance.

That said if you're worried about testing positive and being disrupted in Aruba I would argue the same would hold for a cruise.. if you test positive there will be consequences there too. You either find that acceptable risk or not...

I'm on the Aug 9th Dream. My wife and I have discussed this a lot. Since its just the two of going this was our train of thought.

  • We are both vaccinated
  • Flight to MCO - We will be masked and so will everyone else
  • MCO to Disney Hotel - UBER/LYFT We and the Driver will be masked per their guild lines
  • Hotel dinner - We will be finding a place to eat outside, masked to and from hotel room
  • Bus to Port - We will be masked
  • The Ship - We feel comfortable with the mask guidelines and precautions Disney has in place. We have also scheduled lots of Adults only things. Adult Beach/Mixology classes
Even if my kids were joining us I would still feel good, but they are both 18+.

If I had younger kids that could not be vaccinated, I doubt it. I'm a worry wort, and I would be so scared with every cough or every shared elevator. I dont know if I could enjoy the trip in that case. I feel horrible for parents that have to make that tough decision.

No I would not feel safe. First, because of breakthrough infections. Second, if the cruise involved being in Florida because that state today has more infections that they have had during the entire pandemic. Hopefully things will settle down in 2022.

How concerned would you be?
Personally, I'm not concerned. I'm fully vaccinated and am going out in the world to do stuff. I live very close to WDW and often go into the parks without qualms.
In the end it really doesn't matter how concerned I'd be. Its about how concerned you are.

We are supposed to go on a cruise in October. Right now, they are asking everyone to get tested at the terminal before going on board. At first it was pissing me off and I do feel like it will be more stressful (and worried that positive tests could happen and ruin our vacation big time!) ... But the more I hear about Delta, the more I think testing everyone before getting on board may be the safest way to go.

We live in Florida and have returned to our ‘it’s crazy outside’ routine of no theme parks, limited trips around people etc) but plan on sailing mid Sept as planned with both adults vaccinated but not the kid. We are comfortable with the restrictions & risks just as we had zero issues doing parks before Delta went wild and zero restrictions..

Im fine going on the cruise, we are booked on the 16th. I'm more concerned about getting to the cruise. We are going to drive 19 hours to get there rather than fly. Never fails I catch a cold when I fly so still avoiding that.

We're scheduled to cruise this December with a night before at a Disney resort (no parks), but I'm probably going to cancel it and wait until next December. Even though we're both vaccinated, I'm concerned about the Delta variant.

In terms of traveling I'm more concerned for my son than for myself, because at his private high school they've verified (via submitted vaccination cards) that about 95% of staff & students will be vaccinated, they're going to require masks, it is not a crowded environment, & in general it's a community of staff, students & families that are pretty vigilant about following safety protocols. So imo he'll be quite safe at school, and I don't want to put him at heightened risk for a vacation.

I'm going to be at high risk daily due to my job as an elementary school teacher, working with a full classroom of all unvaccinated students until Pfizer is approved for under-12's. I also live in Texas, and the governor has forbidden mask mandates at schools, which raises the risk level even more. I'll be wearing my KN-95, but I know that at least some of my students will not wear masks. I personally would probably be safer on the trip than at work.

So I'm not sure what to do. I know that my son will have increased risk just living with me. But I still don't know if it would be okay to take him on a trip. It would help to have an idea of where the country would be in terms of this Delta variant surge in late December, but no one has a crystal ball.

I hate Covid!
