Do I have to tell the resort I'll have an ECV?

I usually rent an ECV while I'm in the parks but I'm debating over whether to rent from an outside vendor so I can have it all the time because even walking between the bus and the park and back again can be a lot on my bad knee. But do the Disney resorts require you to tell them ahead of time that you'll have one in the room? Do they only want you to stay in a accessible room when you have an ECV? I might be taking a solo trip next month so it's not like it'll take up too much room. And I won't be using it in the room, jst parking it and plugging it up.

What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

You do not need to tell them anything in advance. All Resort room doors are 36 inches wide, 24 inches is normally the maximum width of ECVs. I never had any problem parking an ECV, even in a Value resort room. The only thing you may have to do is move a table or chair for easier access to an outlet.

The thing about accessible rooms is the toilet is 17 inches high instead of 13 and will have grab bars. If there is a tub it will also have grab bars. If the room has a roll-in shower it is a category of accessible room and must be specifically asked for.

There's no requirement for you to tell Disney you will be renting an ECV. And you don't have to get a handicap room because of your ECV.

There are practical considerations for telling Disney of your medical equipment rental. You didn't mention which resort you will be staying at. Some resort buildings have elevators and some don't. My thought is that Disney has no way of knowing you may need a first floor room if they assign you a room in a resort building that has no elevators. You really should tell Disney of your plans when you make your reservation, so that they can make a note in their special needs section of the hotel reservation. :)

Ok, thanks! If I stay alone, then I'll be a Pop which does have elevators. My main concern is I don't want to take an accessible room away from someone who might need it. Or since it probably won't be crowded when I go (1/29 thru 2/1), then I wouldn't even want to take one in a location that someone else might've wanted if they checked in after me.

I can descend stairs without the ECV in case of a fire. It wouldn't be comfortable but I can do it. So I'm not worried about being placed above ground level. The main thing is I'm not paying for a preferred location since I'd have the ECV and I've already stayed on a ground level floor in a preferred location and wouldn't want to give them any reason to possibly put me there again. I'd like to just be surprised by a new location for the fun of it. And since you're telling me I don't HAVE to tell them, then that would allow me to be surprised. I would have one request though and that would be to not be placed on the backside of a building facing woods (not sure if there are any of these at Pop) but since I'd be alone, that would make me uncomfortable.

When you tell them you need to either be in a ground floor room or near an elevator tell them you do not need the handicapped accesable room it is just for mobility issues while there. We do this when we bring the inlaws or my mother with us.

If you don't want an accessible room, then I'd not tell them as it won't affect your room assignment. I *would* make the request to not be facing the woods area as there are plenty of those room locations at Pop.---Kathy
