Just got back from the Poly and had the pleasure of staying in three different rooms so I can give some feedback on Fiji, Raratonga and Samoa.
Fiji: Our first room was on the ground floor in Fiji facing the beach. We were only here for one night though because we booked two queen beds and they gave us a king room which did not work for our family. Pros: Semi-private, everything in the room worked. Quiet during the day Cons: LOUD during the luau. Let me preface this by saying I used to live on one of the noisiest avenues in NYC and currently live under a flight path near Dulles. Noise does not usually bother me. This was unbearable. It was like being in a hotel room directly above a nightclub. If you're planning on staying up past 10pm then it shouldn't be a big deal, but if you have little kids and are planning on getting to bed early I would not request Fiji. The marina side is probably better because you at least have a row of rooms buffering it, but we requested it and didn't get it so there is no guarantee.
Rarotonga: Our second room was on the ground floor in Rarotonga facing the monorail. I LOVED this location. If it wasn't for the fact that we woke up to a group of construction workers drilling/hammering/sawing on our patio the next morning, this could have been my favorite longhouse. Pros: Very private. Blissfully quiet (at first). Couldn't hear the luau/ boats/ construction/ fireworks. Awesome view. Perfect location- very close to the GCH, pool, laundry areas and TTC. The path to the TTC was closed due to construction so you had to walk along the parking lot to get there, but it only added about a minute onto the walk. Cons: Our room was falling apart. The sliding door didn't lock. The safe was broken. The outlets either didn't work or the plug would fall out after you plugged something in. Just felt really old and dilapidated. It did have a brand new ceramic ionic hair dryer though! That was nice.
Samoa: Our ultimate destination was a room on first floor Samoa facing the volcano pool. At this point we were ready to check out and go to a different hotel, but this was a game changer. It felt like we were in a different hotel. Pros: Amazing view. Everything in the room worked! Zero construction noise. Got the afternoon sun so the rooms didn't feel so dark. You can walk directly from your patio to the pool. You can walk out of your room and see the fireworks. Still a very convenient location even with the construction because you can just cut through the longhouses to get to the TTC. Cons: Not very private. You get loads of people walking past your room during the day. They play music over the loudspeakers at the pool until around 4ish (?) so it might be a bit noisy if you are planning on coming back to the room for a nap during the day, but it's not as bad as the luau. Also, you will get the noise from the fireworks and the water pageant but, again, peanuts compared to the luau noise. Bottom line, this room is awesome. Loved it. If I could be guaranteed this room every time I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Other notes:
Transportation- monorail was running on a delayed schedule but we never felt like we waited for more than a few minutes for one to come so that was fine. The boat to the MK was fantastic. Always empty and never had to wait for it.
Food- We ate at all the restaurants besides ohana, and honestly I think my favorite was captain cooks. Super fast service. You're in an out. Breakfast food was pretty basic, with the exception of Tonga toast which was amazing, but the lunch was quite nice. The only food that I didn't like at the Poly was the food at the luau. We went about 10 years ago and I swear the food was awesome, so I was pretty disappointed when they brought out hard rice, soggy veggies and dry rolls without butter, which, had the rolls been as amazing as they used to be I wouldn't have cared. I was too afraid to try the chicken, but the ribs were OK.
Construction: You really don't notice it unless you are in a room facing it...or unless they are reinforcing beams on your patio, so I wouldn't actually be too concerned about that.
GCH: I love the new lobby. That is all.
