Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

I'm not sure what the point of these wonderfully innovative new rides are if half of it goes down frequently, and other parts don't work a lot of the time. Sorry, but it's a bad look for Disney, this ride isn't that old.
Yeah, it seems it's a lot of moving parts so lots of chances for something to break. Reliability is something they need to work on. Last night we skipped the pre-show at Guardians because it was broken. We didn't mind too much, but it would be better if that didn't happen.

Having said that, it's not just Disney. Our last UO trip had some ride issues as well.

Ive been think about this a lot, is it lack of up keep? To advanced technology?

I mean this seems a bit lose lose, if they go more basic everyone complains but if they close the rides more often to do maintenance people complain too. I’m honestly not sure what the answer is but something seems off. More maintenance at night?

In some cases they did stretch what they could do, so when it breaks it's a pain, but there is still a general lack of maintenance that has become noticeable. They just need more people who can do the work and to put them to work. It doesn't help that you need to have a degree in Imagineering to even touch show elements. They just have to get these folks making the rounds more.

That ride hasn't been open a year! That's ridiculous.

They can get more maintenance people if Disney paid them more IMO. At least in Disneyland, they pay the lowest for mechanics and engineers. More rides really need that lengthy refurb Indiana Jones just received (not just in DL, but in WDW too.)

Well, yeah, it all comes down to that, doesn't it? They could do it if they wanted to. There is some corporate rot in that area of the company for sure. They need to give more power back to WDI to come in and say "this is getting fixed!"

I will say, that issue at Guardians is the only thing we've experienced so far. And the cleanliness has been good so far. I was worried because the Internet can make it seem like the parks are a total mess rn... and because of that I've been on the lookout. So I agree with what everyone is saying: get more maintenance folks, pay them better, but I just want to be clear for anybody reading who might be getting an unduly negative impression.

That's part of it. Part of it is also that these are physical things run continuously for 12 hours a day, every day, for months and months. Things inevitably break under those conditions, no matter how careful your engineering or how aggressively you perform preventative maintenance.

Some of these things are transient, and are repaired more or less overnight. Kylo B-mode is usually only a short while, and it's back. I think the lightsaber effect might be in that category too. Even the Shuttle scene is rarely down, and not for days at a time. For the first two of those things, having a B-mode makes perfect sense--it's a bummer that they don't happen, but it isn't a huge change in the experience. The shuttle is trickier--they could close the ride, or keep running it without the shuttle until they repair it. I don't know what the right answer is there. I suppose someone who'd never been on it before would not easily know something was missing? If so, fine--keep it up until you can get to something overnight.

The cannons seem like a more involved thing, that might require an extended downtime to repair. Again, tricky: take down your biggest draw in a park (and maybe the entire resort) to fix them, or wait until a later refurbishment? And I can see why they might leave them there. I don't think they will be Yeti-forever, but it might be a while. And, once they are repaired, how long before they break again? These remind me of the Hopping B'rer Rabbit in Splash: that worked maybe once out of every three trips, but they kept trying to bring it back.

These rides are very complicated and involved and are at a high rate of usage. These aren’t cell phone, computers, or even cars. I’m sure all of these technologies go down occasionally and people don’t act like the companies that made them are complete garbage. Old rides are different and probably have maintenance/wear and tear issues that need to be resolved. New rides are mostly due to technology.

‘Disney100: The Exhibition – Making the Magic’ Special Premiering This Thursday

The Walt Disney Archives has opened its vaults to mark 100 historic years of making magic. In honor of this global celebration of a century of Disney storytelling, the ABC Owned Television Stations will present a 30-minute special, “Disney100: The Exhibition – Making the Magic,” hosted by Alicia Vitarelli and TaRhonda Thomas of 6abc/WPVI-TV Philadelphia. The special will debut Thursday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT on 6abc and across the ABC Owned Television Stations on linear, digital, and streaming platforms, as well as on the Localish network and for Hulu subscribers. For participating stations, viewers can check local listings.

The special will go behind the scenes of “Disney100: The Exhibition,” which debuted in February at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Created for the 100-year celebration of The Walt Disney Company, the exhibition — which is open to the public and where people can see many rare Disney artifacts for the very first time — runs through August 27, 2023, before it travels to other destinations across the United States. A second unit of the exhibition opens in Munich in April.
