I just got Dylan dropped off for his first day of 2nd grade. He was 'surprised' to see that he knew some of the kids in his class:D I guess he thought that he wouldn't know anyone for some reason. LOL
So.....now it's awfully quiet here:(

Imagestation is back up...here is Matt & Megan on their very first day of high school........

Hey, great pic laura! They look so grown up!

Sigh.....wonder if I'll cry tomorrow........LOL...probably!

morning all

there is not exactly a fall here, more of a extended summer

Congratulations Bernie and Sharon!

Is this where the discriminating Oldkicker shops for gifts for the occassion?

Bernie's Place?

Sandy, you deserve better treatment. Perhaps he was trying to spare you and him the extra emotional componenet of being there together to make it easier for both of you; nevertheless, he was a jerk and it was a cowardly thing to do.

Lorraine, are you sure the teacher is going to buy that swingset story??? I'm glad he's okay!!

Lorraine...I'd vote for telling the teachers that his cousin "Tattoo Boy" beat him up....bawhahahahaha.......kidding aside, I'm glad he's okay, and that none of the kids were seriously injured.

Alan, hope your wife is feeling better.

Happy Anniversary to the OKs

sure doesn't look like Lars is around feeling sorry for herself that the darlins have gone back to school....she's probably at the mall!

Thanks for the website link Alan.....our anniversary is next month!!!

Love the picture Laura.....they do look so grown up!

Glad your kid's first day went well Carol and Melissa.

Keeping your family in my thougths Valerie and wishing the best for your mom.

E - I'll try harder next shopping trip to get something for me too! ;)

Gina - you have some tricks up your sleeve......

Lars, that is a great picture of the two of them! I hope all the kids have a good day at school today!

LOL Steph! I WAS thinking of writing a note to his teacher to explain the eye, but I didn't. Thankfully it did not turn black 'n blue, just a little swollen and puffy around the eye this morning. I took some pics, but forgot to take digital pics. Maybe later today.

Lars - the twins look so grown up! And no, you don't look like you are old enough for high schoolers. What a tragedy at the bus stop! Was she upset at getting her hair wet?

Val - so glad to hear about your mother. she sounds like such a strong and determined woman.

E - good luck w/ your PT session tonight.

Guess I better get back to work since it is my first day back.:(

I had a hysterical DD this morning!! First day of high school & as soon as they got to the bus stop it started to rain............and the bus never came!! I had to drive them to school & she was soooo upset!!
I had a really nice pic of them (taken before they got wet) uploaded to post but Imagestation is down right now.........I'll post it later.

(((Hugs))) to Meg.......that just sucks!!!!!!!!!

Val, your mom sounds like a winner! I'm betting she'll beat the odds and get back to normal. I'll continue to keep her in my prayers.

Lars, that is so sad. They'll always remember today as the day the bus didn't come and they got soaked. The photo is great and I hope the rest of their day is fantastic!

Carol, glad your kids survived. Mine too. I think they both like their classes pretty well so far, but they haven't had much homework yet either. LOL!

Good luck tonight with PT, Elaine. Hope it helps you.

I took Amy to the orthodontist this morning. Tonight we have Court of Honor for Boy Scouts. It's turning into a busy day.

I forgot to post more about the mudball fight. We have permission to have it every year at the Ketner farm. They have a pond that the boys can use to get water, since it's a necessary ingredient for mud. Each patrol (we have 5 patrols of about 12 to 30 boys each) has a staked out area. They put together a catapult which usually involves lashing and practicing knot skills. They haul the water and mix up the mud. At a designated time, they start lobbing mud. If a "mudball" lands in another patrol's area, your patrol gets a point. Mudballs must be pure mud without stones or any other additive.

This degrades eventually into mud-slinging and even mud bucket dumping. After the winners have been established, they play British Bulldog and tug-of-war and I think another game. Finally, when they are winding down, they all jump into the shallow pond and try to wash off most of the mud.

If any of you are familiar with Oklahoma, we are famous for our red dirt. The farm pond's water looks red, too. The dirt is very high in iron content, and they tell me that is why it looks red. Anyway, it doesn't wash off easily, so they usually look almost as bad after the rinsing as before. Personally, I have David wear clothes that he can simply throw away, if it takes a trip to the thrift store to buy something for that purpose. It's just not worth trying to clean them up.

I may attend this year just to take pictures. I have no desire to try my hand at mud wrestling! Bernie, I think this should be considered for a political merit badge. LOL! I'll have to tell that one to our Scoutmaster.

Have a great day, all. I'm off to launder the sheets and towels. I'll check back tonight if I have internet service. Sigh. Seems like I'm off as much as I'm on lately.

Hi Guys,
Let me first start by saying, what I'm about to ask is going to sound completely off the dial to those of you that have this experience every single day of the school year...but I've really never encountered this and am unsure of how i feel about it.

PHeew..that being established:

Who has experience with their kids in portable classrooms?? Patrick starts at the middle school tomorrow and found out today that his classrooms are in the portables. It's the first time our school district has EVER used portable classrooms. They are not very popular here in New England.

I get the feeling that the kids in the portables will be cut off from the rest of the school community b/c of location. Since Patrick is apprehensive about a new school to begin with, I'm wondering if this will be a blessing or a curse.

Course my mother bear instinct is to call the school and ask that he be placed in one of the "regular" classrooms, but that's not really the way to start off the year in a new school, now is it?????

What do you guys think???? What would you do???? Thanks for letting me vent!

BTW, thanks Melissa for the mud ball info....I'm going to pass it along to my DH and the SM.

Stephanie, I've had some experience with portable classrooms. My 6th grade homeroom class was in one, years ago. It was one of my favorite classes. I taught 3rd grade in one when I was just out of college. We were a little more cut off from the rest of the school, but not by much. The facilities were not as fancy, but my class seemed to be pretty happy there. Amy's 3rd grade class was in a portable building. It was also one of her best years.

Having said that, my 6th grade and Amy's 3rd grade experiences had a lot more to do with a wonderful teacher than the building. As a teacher and a parent, I'd be more concerned with what I think of the teacher.

I'd also want to know about heating and air conditioning if you live where you think that may be an issue. Amy's class was always warm in the morning during the fall and spring, until the air conditioner had time to cool the room down. They didn't run it at night.

You are welcome for the mudball info. If you need to know more, I can give you my DH's email and we could discuss any other info that you need.

I am definately more concerned about the teacher than the classroom...and that I'll know more about as the school year progresses.
My biggest concern is that with this being a new/bigger/different school that the kids in the portables still feel part of the whole school community. Judging from their schedules, they are actually only in the main building for lunch....whereas the other classes will change rooms within the main building throughout the day.
I'm trying to embrace this as a positive thing, and a great transition for DS, but it's the first cub to leave the den of our small hometown elementary school.....I just want it to all be a good experience....*without* mom's interference!

{{{hugs}}} for your son Steph! I'm sure he will be o.k. My DS's school has one too, but he is only in 1st grade, and I'm not sure which grade uses it. Try not to worry to much.

I grew up in Alabama schools; of course we used portable classrooms!

My classes from 2nd through 4th grade were all in portables. When I returned to public school for high school (9th - 12th) certain classes were in portables and most were inside.

It didn't make a difference one way or the other. I'm sure he'll be fine!
