We've been able to use it in combination with using the DDP in the past. Others have reported similar experiences. Servers will keep your DDP separate from other purchases so that you can apply your DDE Discount. Obviously, you cannot get a discount on food/beverages that you are paying for with the DDP.
And the automatically applied tip is 18% which I think is great. We end up saving because normally we would apply a 20% tip and most of the time I don't even bother and keep with the 18%.
Edited to add:
We also do not purchasing the DDP any longer since the DDE gets us a better savings overall....especially given our dining habits. Plus, having a villa and a full kitchen we like taking a break there and making a simple meal rather than eating out all the time. Overall the DDE is a great savings!

Here's a link to All Ears' page on the DDE. It's now called the Tables in Wonderland card. It's pretty awesome. It's $60 every year for AP holders. You can't use it with the DDP or the DDDP, but you can use it when buying a meal OOP at a sitdown restaurant. It's a 20% discount, which basically means your tip is essentially free (assuming you tip 20%). The tip is included. It's a nice feature, especially when you are paying OOP. We no longer use the dining plan since the TIW card gets us a good discount.
