I feel the "aw shucks" when I read so many of you posting your support for me!! Thank you!! I posted a Race Report on the Race/Comp Forum... but cut and paste it - I dont usually do trip reports - but I thought I'd practice with this one!!
My son's fiance (from now on refered to as fdil - ie future daughter in law) invited me to stay over her apartment in Chicago - then we'd get up at 6 and head to Montrose Harbor at 6:15 for a race begin time of 7:30...
Heading down Lake Shore Drive, there were a line of cars with the same goal in mind!! 45 min of looking for parking - score!! 7:20 we got our chips, tied them on, then headed to the start time - UH OH, my ipod was left on, so no music to gage my pace!! Maybe around 3500 women were in line - lots of info blaring at us, then the start of the Star Spangled Banner... BAM - off to do the running shuffle...
First corner, I realize my heart was beating too fast, my knee was braced with a leg wrap - compression Walgreens (last week I wrenched it, it feels like it is going to give out, and when I bend it I can feel the creaking!!) but feeling fine - I think I was going to fast - my breath was not even... so we decided to walk... till I caught my breath and then started up again... I was just not sure if I was at my pace - then noticing all the head bobbing, and the pavement curving... I felt the vertigo creeping in!! Get a grip - fdil kept up the chatter - I wanted to smack her - I knew I was holding her back - just go , go on ahead - "NO no, I want to coach you thru this" she truly was just saying inspiring things, and asking if I was breathing deep out the nose or some such comments... asking if I could make it to the 1 mile mark before we walked a bit... and I hit that first mile mark at 15:45 (15 min, that's ok, I knew I was going to fast!!)
Around 2 miles they were handing out water... fdil felt I had to grab a water - practice for Disney, get a feel for what its like to drink water.... OK fine but I'm not going to drink all of it!! This is not hard, this is just hot... no breeze - the Lake (Michigan) was now to the left of us - now bikers think they can come at me - hey I know I'm an easy target, but I'm running a race dagnabit - do I need to knock you off your bike??? (j/k but I was thinking it!!)
I passed a few - kept my stride, I think fdil was trying to push me to the last half mile - she asks me if I want to sprint... and something about getting a tattoo??? I really should pay attention - ah there is the 10 K go left - GO fdil, GO LEFT... no, she wants to stay with me... Finally she has to go her way, and I'm told just 200 feet, or yards... well I could NOT see no stinking finish line, so it may as well be 200 miles!! I cant sprint it, and now I was passed by the mother daughter duo (daughter was maybe 7 or 8 years old mind you!!)
I noticed the photographers, but they were more interested in the 10K racers, some people said slower runners to the left - then 5K'ers PLEASE MOVE TO YOUR RIGHT!! well dagnabit make up your minds! I'll stay right in the middle on the yellow line, thank you very much!!! oh, another photographer, shall I take off my cool new sunglasses?? nah better not - dont want to be to annoying!! ANd there at the finish line was a volunteer with a Monster Inc hat - too funny!! BEEP _ BEEP I'm done, it was either at 46 min and 8 sec or 48 min and 6 sec...
My legs felt like mush, my head was sweaty, my arms were shaking... and they wanted me to stop and grab the chip off my shoe!! I took the pretty carnation they were handing out, along with a bottle of water, and walked around to wait for fdil to cross - and out pops dh and dd - they made it after all!!
and now I can say... "I'm a Racer

"
