Dining Review - March/April 2022

Does Scott always drink martinis and may we please have a martini review and rating?
I am not a great cocktail drinker but on my last visit to WDW I decided to always order an Old Fashioned as my aperitif. I was surprised by how different they were. I may try a martini trawl next time.
Lately his go-to drink is a Martini. Sometimes he’ll have Bourbon or Tequila. I asked him what he thought of the different martini’s he had this trip and if any were better than others. I didn’t think to ask him to rate them at the time (but I will on our next trip).

He said the best ones were at Abracadabar (at the Boardwalk) and Enchanted Rose (at the Grand Floridian).
His least favorite was the one at the Crews Cup (at the Yacht Club)

Thursday 3/24/22
We spent most of the day at Magic Kingdom

We went to Disney Springs in the afternoon and went to the Boathouse for lunch. We don’t normally have a big lunch nor do we usually have an alcoholic drink during the day but we did both today.

Scott may have had gin & tonic today. I didn’t text myself and the picture doesn’t look like a martini.
I had the cutest drink…Duck Duck Razz: Stoli Razz, Peach Schnapps, Blue Curaçao, Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup (with a cute floating duck). My cute drink was very good.

66457541-E42F-4EFB-9FDF-937134D3E9D9.jpeg

We shared the Wild Caught Sea of Cortez Shrimp with London Dry Gin cocktail sauce. These are really fresh and we enjoyed them.

5675F5A2-9351-428E-8930-7710E4803332.jpeg

Scott also had some oysters which he enjoyed. I don’t like oysters.

C94004BD-3C64-4999-98D2-68C1340AF836.jpeg

We shared the Yellowfin Tuna Poke: Avocado, Mango, Soy Lime Vinaigrette. This was really good.
6C48B6B0-56F0-4EF4-9902-F5BBA7004EBD.jpeg

We also shared the filet mignon sliders with fries. Also very good.
C69B73CA-E908-4113-82DF-E47A97480156.jpeg

This was too much food. We were originally going to get either the poke or the sliders but the bartender said they are both small portions and since we’re sharing we should get both. We should have just stuck with one.

We also shared the Key Lime Pie in a mason jar. This was the weakest part of the meal. Maybe we were just too full to enjoy it.

Thursday 3/24/22 - Continued
Later that night we had dinner at Shula’s at the Dolphin with Michael and Donna.

A5BBF170-9A66-4CFB-A31E-BA9A2228DA14.jpeg

Scott and Michael both had a Martini, Donna had Seltzer, and I had Sprite. I’m a wimpy drinker and since I had my cute duck drink earlier today I stuck with soda. I only took a picture of Scott’s Martini. Michael’s looked the same but I think he asked for extra olives

B9786018-2097-458E-8D31-B87C3EBB0F19.jpeg

For appetizers Scott and I shared:
Tuna Tartare: Diced Ahi tuna, red chili, sesame vinaigrette, avocado cream, crispy wontons
Thick cut Nueske’s Bacon: bourbon-honey glaze, tomato jam, cheddar grits, white cabbage and fennel slaw.

The tuna is great here, so fresh and the chips they serve it with are different than you normally see with tuna tartare.
The bacon was just OK, a little too fatty for me, but Scott liked it

C1D60DFF-8FE5-4B72-9084-68F80724E045.jpeg

Mike and Donna shared:
Tuna Tartare - I won’t repeat the description or picture since it was the same as above; they both really enjoyed it too
Maryland Style Crab Cake: Jumbo lump crab, mustard, old bay seasoning with remoulade sauce. They enjoyed this too.
9786047E-91DD-495C-B575-0EFFB564356E.jpeg

The bread here is really good too - it was hard to stick to just one piece.

Thursday 3/24/22 Continued:
I liked how they have a block of knives for you to choose from
6FCDAE03-CFFA-4B04-9CDF-D1FE77D047A3.jpeg

For our entree Scott and I shared the Daily Market Fresh Fish - Cobia. When this came out we knew something was wrong - it smelled really fishy (like it was bad). We tasted it and it tasted off. While the bad Cobia was a disappointment they made it right by replacing it for us. We got the Salmon instead which was good. Once you have something bad it kind of turns me off the rest of the meal.

Scott also ordered the Macaroni and Cheese: Cavatappi pasta, Gouda and cheddar cheese sauce, bread crumbs. He really liked the Mac and cheese. It was one of his favorite ones of the trip.
F0FADBEC-1853-40E4-A2F2-8702894C4219.jpeg

Mike and Donna shared the Coaches Cut Prime Rib: Herb crusted and served with Yorkshire pudding and an jus. They said it was OK, but not great. They were happy they shared given how huge the serving is
DB1D1D9F-DD57-4A3F-AA36-2C05D9050D5E.jpeg

For dessert each couple shared a chocolate soufflé. OMG these are so delicious.

Scott and I really like Shula’s, even after the bad Cobia.

Great reviews...your writing style is enjoyable. Short and to the point, no punches pulled...well done! I'm gonna have to search for your previous reviews:).

Friday 3/25/22
We spent the day at Hollywood Studios.

I wanted to get the pop tarts from Woody‘s Lunch Box. They had Raspberry and I think the other one was banana/peanut butter. I got both of them, wrapped them up (we brought a ziploc baggie just for this reason) and picked on them for a few days. They are good. Not as sweet as boxed PopTarts you get in the supermarket. I preferred the raspberry one but both were good. They were a little squished by the time I took their picture.

Later that night we drove to Animal Kingdom Lodge for dinner at Jiko.

We started with drinks. I had the African Star Mojito: African Star Run, Van der Hum Tangierine Liqueur, Agave Syrup, Lime Juice, Fresh Mint, topped with soda water.
Scott had the Kanu Old Fashioned: Whiskey, Orange Bitters, Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla.
I am enjoying trying the various specialty cocktails at different restaurants. Some are better than others. These were very good.
784960EC-F0E1-4BC7-9B33-8DBD08A1A7DD.jpeg

The bread was good too. Two different types of bread. I forgot to note what it was but we enjoyed it.
36189E4E-5794-4585-81DA-507C66E45B0A.jpeg

We ordered two appetizers that we shared
Duck Confit and Honey-Raisin Flatbread: Preserved Duck, Rocket, Toasted Chickpeas, Mozzarella, Plump Raisins, Harissa, spiced honey. This was a little spicy for me, but we both enjoyed it. It had very different and unique flavors.
BB265A39-5380-4C40-B4F3-3F2031E12D76.jpeg

Seared Scallops with Nopi and Groundnuts: Diver scallops, blistered peanuts, Nhopi Chestnut cream, fennel-apple slaw, cider reduction. This was another good dish. I’m not a fan of scallops normally but enjoyed these. Maybe I’m starting to like scallops more in general since I also liked the ones at Narcoose’s
EE78380D-BD8B-492D-82D2-23964D3FA761.jpeg

For our entree, we shared the Oak grilled Filet Mignon: Four-cheese macaroni, rainbow cauliflower, chocolate-red wine demi glacé. They split the plate for us so this picture is only half of the entree. It was a great entree, we both enjoyed it. The rainbow cauliflower was a nice touch; we’ve been eating cauliflower at home and I liked this type. I even enjoyed the regular macaroni and cheese. Basically we both enjoyed everything about this dish.
79B3EC98-AD88-4B1E-B5CF-3C9EB2F7FDD7.jpeg

Scott also ordered the special macaroni and cheese side. Bobotie Mac & Cheese: Four-cheese, wagyu, almonds, raisins, kachumbari, red wine reduction. I didn’t like this, but Scott thought it was great.
B784BA94-F09D-49FE-88F6-DBA3C93533B2.jpeg

For dessert we shared the Chocolate Kilimanjaro: Single origin Ghanaian Dark chocolate mousse, pistachio financier, pink peppercorn meringue, cocoa nib crunch, ras el hangout Pineapples. This was just OK, probably the weakest part of the meal.
7296767D-C4BD-4891-A6EC-9EDF5E2C55F0.jpeg

We were also brought a little dish with candies on it. It’s a cute way to finish the meal.
3C7519D1-A051-47E8-AFEC-2F920B2173F9.jpeg

We really enjoyed Jiko and will definitely return.

Thanks for taking the time to write the reports!

Saturday 3/26/22
Our day started with our normal routine, but we weren’t heading to a park today.

We went to Disney Springs when they opened. We put our names in Gideon’s virtual queue then did some shopping.

We had lunch at Earl of Sandwich.
92890F97-719B-4154-B4CC-1B04F7D7B63D.jpeg
Scott had the Italian: Salami, Capicola, ham, pepperoni, mozzarella, Roma tomato, Italian seasoning, and Italian dressing.
I had the Original: Roasted beef, cheddar, and horseradish sauce
5F92063F-2915-45D4-AAD2-358877E889BC.jpeg
5BE81592-F8EF-4A35-A7C3-8BA4C990853E.jpeg

I haven’t had Earl of Sandwich in years and this was Scott’s first time trying it. We both enjoyed it. Scott asked me why I didn’t bring him here before?

We went to Gideon’s to get our cookies. We waited on the return line and chatted with some people there. It’s such a cute little store and smells great. We got 12 more cookies. We brought them back to the villa to freeze them.
5D7FE0D7-2976-4B82-AF5B-7431AFE989C0.jpeg

That evening we picked up Jillian and drove to Icon Park where we were meeting Dana, Herman, and their kids (Sarah, Aaron, and Ariel). We were planning to have dinner at the Yardhouse but they had a 2.5 hour wait. We went to Outback and they were able to seat us immediately.

I forgot to take pictures of our food but it was standard Outback food; meaning it was good and what you expect.
We had Aussie fries, Scott had a chicken sandwich, I had salmon. I don’t remember what everyone else had except Dana since she ordered a cookie ice cream skillet for her dinner. We had a nice time hanging out with everyone.

When we got back, we dropped Jillian off, then Scott and I headed to the Polynesian to Tambu Lounge.
I had a white sangria and Scott had a martini. The main reason we came here…the Pineapple Bread Pudding. Wow this bread pudding is so good; it’s worth the trip to come here.

Sunday 3/27/22
We spent the day with Mike and Donna at Hollywood Studios

We went to the Grand Floridian before our dinner reservation (Citricos) and went to the Enchanted Rose Lounge for cocktails first.

I had the B&B: Freshly brewed twining of London Iced Tea with Lemon, Blueberry, and Basil (Non alcoholic). This was refreshing

Donna had the Garden Spritzer: Seedlip Garden 108 Herbal Distilled Non-alcoholic spirit, lime, agave, and soda (Non alcoholic). She liked this a lot and said it tasted like a Gin & tonic.

Michael had Sunny Margarita: Patron Silver Tequila, Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, juices of orange and lime, and agave. He liked his margarita

Scott had a Martini (no surprise there).

I didn’t get any good pictures of the drinks here, but it was nice to have a chance to chat, recap our day so far, and discuss evening plans (hopping to Epcot after dinner).

We had dinner at Citricos.
We started with drinks. Donna was very impressed at the various non-alcoholic options to try. Sometimes you want something other than soda or water, but aren’t in the mood for alcohol.

I had the Paradise Punch: Melted sugar, Caribbean spices, strawberry, vanilla bean, orgeat (almond), cranberry and citrus (non alcoholic). This was good, a bit heavier than some of the drinks. It had an interesting flavor that I couldn’t really place (probably the Caribbean spices). I enjoyed it but not sure I’d get it again.

Donna had the London Dry Juniper Seltzer: Authentic Cinchona Bark and smoked rosemary blended with citrus, lemongrass and juniper aromatics (Non alcoholic). She loved this and said it was fantastic, probably the best non-alcoholic cocktail she’s ever had.

Scott and Michael both had martini’s.

B44D0D3F-FA22-49F0-B9D5-A306C6B25A9B.jpeg

Their bread is nice and crispy outside and soft inside.

ED0660AB-4C84-47A7-AA46-F63F3A36FA0E.jpeg

For appetizers. Scott and I shared the Smoked Duck Breast: Fresh Tagliatelle Pasta, celeriac purée, duck confit. We told Mike and Donna how good this is so they shared one also; they agreed with our raving and also thought it was great. Just one picture since it looks the same.
F5F96CD8-FF59-4716-84AD-3A97CC304FDC.jpeg

We also shared the Berkshire Pork Belly: Boniato and Plaintain Croquette, Salsa Verde, Jicima. This was good too, but not as good as the duck.
393DCA1B-99A7-45FF-9761-496267BBB79C.jpeg

For our entrees Donna and I ordered the same thing. Butter poached Florida Mahi Mahi: Mashed Fingerling potatoes, grilled asparagus, local mushrooms, grapefruit beurre blanc. In September when we were here they made this dish with Cobia and I loved it. The waiter explained they use sustainable fish and Cobia wasn’t the right fish to get right now so they are making it with Mahi Mahi. I told Donna how much I loved this dish in September (when it had Cobia) so assumed the Mahi Mahi would be just as good. She trusted my opinion and went with it too. It was just as good; we both enjoyed it. Only 1 picture since it looks the same.
EB4E4BA1-2D6B-4538-B1FB-4F806CDD5EFC.jpeg

Scott had the Guava barbecued short ribs: Aged cheddar creamy grits, roasted poblano, Curtido slaw, Brussel sprouts. He said it was OK but thought the fish dishes he’s had here before were stronger.
2E945536-DE1B-4AF9-92CC-463DA2F44227.jpeg

Mike had the Domestic Golden Tilefish: Jupiter rice chorizo “risotto”, key west pink shrimp, confit tomatoes. Scott suggested this one to him since he really enjoyed it last trip so Mike took the suggestion and agreed it was a great dish.
6FD96891-3D2B-43A2-B4FE-D8C12EC99F3E.jpeg

For dessert Scott and I shared the Apple Rose: Served Warm with seasonal apples, marzipan, raspberry jam, frozen coconut milk. This was a beautiful presentation and tasted good too. But probably not the best of the different desserts we’ve had here.
3143A24D-8B8F-48BE-B124-9923C5F6B231.jpeg

Mike and Donna shared the Blackberry Tartelette: Lemon Bavarian and blackberry mousse enrolled in glacage with violet syrup. We recommended this dessert to them and they loved it. It’s a nice light dessert.
C685A7A4-8892-4AA3-89D8-39E321D8BB5C.jpeg

They brought us a plate of chocolate truffles after dessert too. This is always a nice way to end a meal. And we were just talking about truffles before they brought it over.

21F5E56C-F5C3-4158-849F-032B4F3D3350.jpeg

We all really enjoyed Citricos. The food is great and most of the dishes aren’t overly heavy (depending what you order).
We headed over to Epcot after dinner.

Monday 3/28/22
We spent most of the day at Animal Kingdom with Mike and Donna.

The four of us headed to the Grand Floridian for dinner at Narcooses. We went a bit early to have drinks at the bar before dinner. They didn’t have a non-alcoholic cocktail menu but they made Donna and I virgin Mango Mojito’s. These were just as good as the ones I’ve previously had made with alcohol. I love how they use the limes to make it look like Mickey ears. Scott and Mike both had martini’s.
64DCC165-AD33-405C-865E-CA64FD22E200.jpeg

We were seated a bit before our reservation time.

Their bread is good, but makes a lot of crumbs.
05F3C71F-205A-4100-9CBD-499C02A7946C.jpeg

For appetizers each couple shared an order of the Crispy Rhode Island Calamari: Peppadew Banana pepper olive relish, tomato coulis. Just one picture since they looked the same. I avoided the olives since I don’t like olives. But the calamari was very good, nice and crispy.
77C38DE1-70B5-4220-91D4-013598ECAB41.jpeg

For our entrees, Donna wanted soup and salad. She ordered Maine Lobster Bisque: Butter poached lobster, coral, chervil. And Caesar Salad: Crisp romaine leaves, traditional Caesar dressing, grated house cured yolks, fried capers. She said it was very good and just what she was craving.
4925B5DD-AF3E-402E-8B06-D8DB56498FC8.jpeg
05764391-33A9-4793-B7D6-A5C49EFB8CE2.jpeg

Scott and Michael both ordered the same thing (so I’m only sharing one picture). Pan-seared Georges bank day boat scallops: Parisian style gnocchi, peas, ham, truffled Meyer lemon cream. They both enjoyed it. Scott and I have had this before and know it’s really good.
D455B62F-8602-4614-B447-EC1CE866A5E5.jpeg

I was originally thinking of the Mahi Mahi dish but the waiter recommended pretty much everything else but that so I went with the Sweet Potato Gnocchi: Poma Rosa Tomato Ragu. This was very good today and I enjoyed it.
8E0ECCA5-39A5-48EF-B803-6819E651EFB0.jpeg

For dessert, Scott and I shared the Almond crusted cheesecake with lambert cherry sauce. This is such a great dessert; we both really liked it.
0ED880CB-D30B-48FB-AC25-249101FFB52F.jpeg

Mike and Donna shared the Lemon Bar: lemon shortbread cookies filled with lemon mousse, topped with lemon curd, fresh raspberries, and white chocolate. They really enjoyed it and said it was a lighter dessert.
BF2DE8D5-8A10-42C4-9944-C6BE3D1AE35A.jpeg

We all enjoyed Narcoose’s. After dinner we hopped over to Magic Kingdom.

Tuesday 3/29/22
We spent the morning at Magic Kingdom.

We headed to lunch at Saltgrass. We found this place on a prior trip. It’s right on SR 535 near the timeshare (Vistana Resort); not the one we’re staying at this trip.

0C6E36C0-4033-4979-B9D7-AE69AD4540EE.jpeg

We both had soda. The bread and salad remind me of Outback Steakhouse a bit; I mean that in a good way, it’s consistent and it’s good.
FB23299B-1A29-40E9-B1F0-C45FDDA6C54C.jpeg
7B442C5C-BD0C-4476-A4CB-A3FB5578E644.jpeg

We shared the bacon wrapped filet with grilled shrimp. Scott saw smoked Mac and cheese on the menu so wanted that as the side. Everything was good. Sharing was the right amount of food.
12092CBB-FF58-4697-BA64-E0F3BA356E4C.jpeg

It was a nice little break to go have lunch.

Tuesday 3/29/22 - Continued
We did something different this evening…we didn’t have dinner reservations. We wanted to try being spontaneous and see what happened. We knew we may not be able to eat somewhere we wanted to if they were booked.

We headed to Disney Springs. We did a bit of shopping and wandering around.

We stopped at Morimoto to go to the bar for a drink.
I had a Morimoto Mai Tai: Cruzan Coconut rum, orgreat, pineapple, lime, topped with 12 year aged Appleton estate. Scott had a martini.
F7DE966F-29D7-48D5-82A9-80D584145E54.jpeg

While sitting there the bartender asked if we wanted to eat, so we did.

We started with the California Roll: Blue crab meat, cucumber, and avocado. Sounds simple but it tasted really fresh.

1F87EEFD-0693-4FE5-842B-6BC16016A48E.jpeg

We also ordered the Toro Tartare: dashi soy, avocado, chive, and wasabi. What a great presentation. And I like that you are able to customize how you eat it by putting the toppings on it that you want.
16BC55A5-3162-44B6-8D74-E4D92E9BD6D8.jpeg

For our entree we ordered the Morimoto Peking Duck for two: carved house-roasted whole duck, served with steamed flour tortillas, apricot sweet chili, hoisin miso and choice of steamed white or brown rice. We were so glad we went with this. It was great. We really enjoyed it.
4496BF69-0530-4A62-B745-130F7EBE2D92.jpeg

Morimoto was a very pleasant surprise. We really enjoyed it.

We walked around some more and when we were ready for dessert, we headed to the Polynesian to go to the Tambu Lounge for Pineapple Bread Pudding. This has become our favorite dessert of the trip. Scott had a Grand Marnier. I had the Keiki Lemonade: Minute Maid premium lemonade, pineapple, passion fruit, and citrus.

Our unplanned evening worked out great. We will do something like that again.

Wednesday 3/30/22
We spent the day at Hollywood Studios.

Scott has been craving a hot dog. Midday, we passed a place in the park, I don’t remember the name unfortunately, it wasn’t a restaurant or even a fast food place, more like a kiosk, that had hot dogs and also num num cookies. I remember reading about them so got one of those too. Scott was happy with his hot dog, it was a basic hot dog. I wasn’t crazy about the num num cookie. It was OK, nowhere near the Gideon’s cookies, but it was a warm gooey cookie.

B8E702A4-F3D0-4E21-A2E6-215C1179505B.jpeg

Later that evening we drove to the Contemporary for dinner at Steakhouse71. We were here back in the fall, the first week they opened, and weren’t impressed. We figured maybe they were still working out the kinks being newly opened and after reading so many people liking it we decided to give it another try.

We had drinks at the bar first.
I had the 5 Legged Llama: Joffrey’s Coffee Cold Brew, Maple, Vanilla Syrup, Tonic Water. This was horrible. After one sip I knew I wasn’t going to drink it. The bartender said a lot of people don’t like it. Scott had his martini.

08BE6E4F-5FFC-4605-8550-A4CC54026E54.jpeg

I ordered a Magical Beacon: Empress 1908 Gin, Bols, Blue Curaçao, Minute Maid Premium Lemonade, Orgeat, Lemon, Hibuscus, Grenadine, and a souvinir glow cube. This was so much better. Even Scott didn’t like the Llama drink. He ordered a muddled cucumber drink, but I forgot exactly what it was. He liked it.
0B441788-5972-4057-B437-05B78004152D.jpeg

We were seated on time.
4D5A38DE-F751-4CD2-BAA0-CC6A779998EE.jpeg

For our appetizers we ordered:
Lump Crab Cakes: Old Bay Remoulade, Corn Hash, House made saltine crackers. These were pretty good. Decent crab cakes, not the best I’ve ever had, but they were good.
4500872D-BBEC-49C2-88B6-35C8FE04EE67.jpeg

We also had the Sea Salt dusted potato Brioche: Butter, Roasted Garlic, Tomato Spread. I liked how they wrote 71 in the butter. The buns were good. I still think it’s odd that they charge extra for the brioche buns.

A1D957DB-38F1-4838-96D7-FCC4298B5A8D.jpeg

For our entree we shared the prime rib with horseradish sauce and Yorkshire pudding. We also ordered the macaroni and cheese. The prime rib arrived too rare for us so they took it back to cook it some more. It was much better once cooked more. The Yorkshire pudding (or I call them popovers) was the best part.
CD24284E-F0BB-4D72-9C88-94414F8B0C30.jpeg

We’re glad we came back to give the place another try, but we still weren’t thrilled with it. It wasn’t bad but there are so many other restaurants we would go to instead.

Scott was craving his favorite dessert so we headed over to the Polynesian to the Tambu Lounge. Scott had a Grand Marnier and Coffee. I had the Watermelon Lemonade: Minute Maid Premium Lemonade and Watermelon.
23A298FD-8934-47EE-A08A-50FBD8256576.jpeg

And our Pineapple Bread Pudding. We are both loving this dessert.

716B15BF-B835-4F4E-8EA3-890E0CD2CF64.jpeg

We headed to Magic Kingdom after dessert.
