Digi Cam Question

I'm being very brave on this trip and taking just the digi cam. I just bought a 256 mb card, and I have a 32 mb backup. I don't want to bring my laptop, though. So my question is, are there places in the parks (camera shops?) where I can transfer my pics to a CD? I'm afraid of running out of space on the card or just wiping out all the pics somehow before we get home.

Any other digi cam tips would be great appreciated, also!!!

FIVE DAYS TIL WE LEAVE! :bounce:

I don't know for sure but I think there was just a post about this a week or so ago and it was mentioned that Epcot has a place where you can transfer your pictures.

Hope this helps!!!

I think yoiu can do it at any of the Kodak/camera stores at each of the parks, usually near the entrances. If me, though, I would invest in 1 or 2 more crds, they are so inexpensive today. I would think they would charge you as much for a transfer as a new card purchased online at like www.ecost.com or www.buy.com . Just my thoughts there.

I agree on just getting another memory card. ecost is great for deals on them. And when you get back and no longer need all that memory just sell it on eBay! :)

Just in case.......if you do happen to lose the pictures on your card there is sometimes a way to get them back. Just don't do ANYTHING with the card after you know they are lost. There are numerous programs that will retrieve the lost files in some (I don't think all) situations.

I think you've got more than enough space with the card you have, unless you are shooting at the highest resolution and size. Your talking hundreds of photos AND you get to review and pitch the losers...that's where you save space. That said, I do haul my laptop and transfer every few days. That allows me to start cleaning up the pics and to see them on a larger screen.

Hi Dan,
Add to that list www.sterlingtek.com

Thanks! I really don't want to haul the laptop with me, I'm traveling alone with my two boys this trip and I'm trying to keep things simple. :) I figured a 256 mb card and a 32 mb back up would be enough...but I think I'll check out the camera shops at the parks and see about dumping onto a CD, too. I don't really want to spend another $65+ on another memory card.

Thanks everyone...if MK and Epcot have camera shops, I bet MGM and AK have one, too. :) :Pinkbounc

By the time you pay disney to transfer images onto a CD you will have wished you purchased the extra memory card. They are VERY expensive. http://www.sterlingtek.com/compactflash.html
has some of the best prices I have seen on Compact Flash or Smart Media.

What type of memory does your camera use?

If it takes compact flash, which is the cheapest, you can get a 256 card for $34 after $15 mail-in rebate at ecost.com right now on the bargain countdown. I've gotten 2 of them. They work great. The shipping is really fast too.

If it takes a memory other than compact flash then I would hope it's cheaper to transfer the images in the parks! Can't be over $50?!

Gail - How much does the picture transfer cost?

What are you planning on doing with the photos once you get home? If you are only planning on looking at them on screen you could use a low resolution on the camera. If you are planning on printing them pick the highest or next to highest resolution so that the pictures come out great.

If you are planning on printing them then I would invest in a few extra memory cards.

I plan on having them all on CD's and printing just some of them. (we have albums upon albums of Disney pics!!) I have a nice Lexmark photo printer, but for vacation pics I'm going to have them printed up at Costco.. their printers are better and the pics don't fade. They print photos for .19 a piece.

My camera takes the SD memory cards...the 256 mb one I just bought was $64.99 at Costco. I can't imagine putting the photos on CDs at WDW would cost more than $65, would it????

It totally depends on how often you plan to put them on a CD.
Another reason I like to have a spare is sometimes these cards do fail.
Sam's Club can do it also, there is one near WDW (assuming you have a car) as is WalMart (their prints don't fade either, btw). I would never even consider sending my vacation photos to an outlab, they do get lost and never ever send memory media to an outlab, they grow legs. :) Can you tell what I used to do for over 10 years? :)
As to the cost at Disney, I truly forgot the actual cost, but, I do remember my reaction, I was aghast!!!

Their printers are better than what?
Your home printer?

I really don't remember, I do know I was shocked. The price is the same for any memory media, the process is the same.

Well I think I would be shocked at anything over $35! :p

I just meant that if the camera in question doesn't take CF, since it's the cheapest, then the price for putting any memory onto CD should cost less than buying another card.

For my upcoming trip I bought one 512 mb, and two 256 mb cards for a whole GIG worth of memory :D I wanted to buy seperate cards rather than one single gig card for 2 reasons:

1. It's cheaper with 3 rebates rather than 1 ;)
2. I didn't want to risk the ONE card failing on me, I'd rather have them seperate so if one goes, I still have plenty of other :D

I plan on selling one of the 256 cards when I get back. I just like to be able to take ALL the pictures I want, and not worry about weeding through them until I get home.

Plus, I have a 4 mp camera and I will use the highest setting most of the time and with 1 gig that will give me approx 65 pictures per day.....hmmm and if that's not enough I still have my small 32 mb card that came with the camera.....an extra 14 pics! hehe :D

All pictures fade. It doesn't matter what type of printer you use eventually they will fade. 35mm prints are only rated to last 25 years. The beauty of digital is that you can always reprint.

There are many home printers now that do as good a job if not better than store development. The cost is comparable too.

So if you are only going to print them at 4x6 you should use the setting on the camera for medium resolution.

Very true, they do fade to some degree and home printers do not do the job as well as the new mini lab digital (not just for digital prints) printers. I did mine on a Fuji digital at work and they came out beautifully and have yet to fade and that was a good 3 years ago.

I hear what you are saying and agree. You have to be careful with CF size as not all cameras will take the really nice big capacity ones. You do have to check the specs. for your camera, which I am sure you did.
One question, why would you sell the 256 card? Who would pay you what you paid for it? I would keep it as a spare.
I only use CF with a lifetime guarantee, which Kingston does provide. Dee is a registered dealer with Kingston, so, I will have to check the prices he gets. I might have to leave Sterling Tek if the prices are better. Oh, darn, and I like them!!!!!
We bring the laptop, but, I think next trip I will invest in more CF cards. We carry two cameras with us, the Nikon 950 and the Nikon 5000 (which is looking for a new home :) ).

I am not sure if I will sell it or keep it, I guess it will depend on how much I spend on vacation :) and if I need the money. I will still have the 512 and the other 256 so that will be enough for me....I won't be going on another vacation for more than a year (at least not one longer than 3 or 4 days).

If I do decide to sell it I will put it on eBay if the going prices are the same as what I paid for it.

Keeping it as a spare is a good idea though, and the more I think about it, I might just do that :D

With my old digital camera I only had a 64MB card and didn't have a laptop. What I ended up doing was picking up a Iomega Photoshow. What it is is a Zip drive with memory slots that allows you to download your pictures to the zipdisk and view them on tv. It was cheaper than a laptop and easier to carry around.

I just picked up a new camera for my next trip and have ended up buying a 512 and a 256 card for it. I'm hoping that I won't take more than 700 good pics through the trip :)
