Dieting for Disney

Hey all! I just wanted to drop a quick line to all of you. I know that most of the members of this little family we have here are Mother's, so I wanted to wish all of you a Happy Mother's Day. I hope that you have a great day with your families and hopefully, we will see you again tomorrow.

Have a great day all!

Bryan

OK, tried to "join" this a while back. I'm trying again - someone please respond to this post if I may join in. Hope to catch up reading the rest of the thread in a couple days. I've just started South Beach in desparation to have my shorts fit at WDW in 5 1/2 weeks. I have survived 7 days in Phase 1 with 7 more to go in Phase 1. Lost 4.8# so far but I have more dieting to do just to get into last year's shorts. Then much more to lose to look really good for December WDW trip.

DVCkidsmom - It seems like I remember you coming in before. Of course, you are more than welcomed to come back to us. We are always happy to have new or old members with our little support group. But after a while, you may find out the same thing that most of us have found out as well. This isn't just a support group. We are family. I, too, was on the SBD for a little while. I was loosing weight but I was staying soft. Of course, my goal may be different from yours. I have a dream of being able to see my abs some day. On the SBD, that wasn't going to be possible because of all the sodium in the meals that they recommend. I am not trying to say anything bad about the program. In general, I feel like it is one of the better programs out there. It just wasn't giving me my desired results. That's all. On the other hand, I would have to say Congratulations! 4.8 pounds in the first week is great. That is getting you closer and closer to your goal. What a great way to get started. I would like to ask a few questions though, without trying to pry. How much are you trying to lose? What kind of exercising are you doing? And are you taking any kind of vitamins? These are just general questions so we as a group will know a little more about you hopefully so we can help you and encourage you more along your journey.

Again, :welcome: party: :grouphug: :cheer2: :woohoo:

No prob, I'm reaching similar conclusions myself though will stick with it 'til WDW June trip in support of a local friend. I'm hoping, though it's quite a juggling act, to incorporate the best portions of SB with Eat Right 4 Your Type and The Thyroid Diet since food sensitivities of "my type" and hypothyroid are also issues for me. I'll basically end up on my own Linda Plan when I've sorted it all out.
Don't know how much I'm trying to lose. Per weight charts I have 60+ pounds to lose but I won't likely get that low. I'm aiming for a human rather than fruit or bovine shape and a good body composition. Exercise is definitely key but I'm facing some challenges. Living in boonies means no reasonable gym access and walking/biking/blading mileage limited by dangerous dogs and highways. Homeschooling means that my best energy time is usually spent with kids on school. Rather than complain, which was the MO for the last 2 years or so, I'm trying to work around it. I do go to town twice a week and exercise on those days: mall walking Tuesdays and participate in the homeschool PE class Wednesdays. Just got a new morning habit of checking AP code availability which now allows me to get in a Denise Austin Fit & Lite off of TV before kids are awake. Some biking/blading is better than none and DD recently took off training wheels and I got new roller blades for Mothers Day :cool1: so we'll have some, if not tons, of afternoon movement also. Need to add more movement and definitely some strength work. I like to paddle a kayak/canoe thing we've got on the river so that should be easy to add. Supplements are in transition between what I am doing and what I think I should try. Currently taking fairly regularly: Ionic Fizz, tri-omega, zinc, B-complex and acidophilus, enzymes, and olive leaf when sinus infection or bloating dictate. Since I'm just now reading the books mentioned above, the supplement situation will likely change. Do you have recommendations? Thanks for the encouragement and I'm so glad to be "adopted" into the fabulous family. :goodvibes

Go to WDW! Ok, so you can see by my post that I gained a little weight on our trip. But it was well worth it! My son and I had a wonderful time! We camped with his cub scout pack from friday till sunday. We did some activities with the pack but also spent some time just the two of us in the parks. We went on every ride he wanted and a couple I wanted like the Carosel of Progress and the Transit Authority (which broke down while we were on it). But those two ride brought me back to when I was about my sons age, riding them for the first time. We also ate at Whispering Canyon, I didn't warn him about the antics ahead of time. It was just his type of resturant. He asked for a straw and the waiter threw a handful at him. :rotfl2: He looked at me and didn't know what to do, I was laughing so hard I couldn't say anything.
As for the diet, there was none this weekend! I ate milshakes everyday, popcorn, smores, steak, frenchfries and a host of other goodies! Today I get back to reality :( I am hoping I just retained a little water from all the salt! :rotfl:
Well, I have 2 weeks to lose it and maybe a little more before the week long family trip!

DVCkidsMom - Let's see where a good spot to begin would be. First, SBD like I said, is a good diet program and people have lost a lot of weight on that program. I totally understand wanting to change it up though to something that is not as strict. That's what I hate about all of these "fad" diets. Most of them are very regimented and always try to tell you the only way you can loose weight is by eating their foods. You can eat everyday foods on a regular basis and loose weight. In any diet, the key to loosing weight is to spend more calories in a day than you take in. What is the best way to do that? Take in healthy foods and keep your heart rate up. NOWHERE does it say that you have to join a gym. A couple of tips on how to achieve this would be as follows: Power walking. (High intensity walking wherever you feel comfortable) Bike riding or roller blading are both good. I will tell you this. You have never seen a "fat" bicyclist. (Lance Armstrong) Strength training. This can be achieved with push ups or even going to Wal-Mart and getting some hand weights and doing exercises with them. Actually, about a week or so ago, I did a post of an exercise routine that I did at home with my DW. I asked if anyone had tried it and thekidsmom said she had and was very sore from it as well. It might be something you would like to try to give you an alternative to the gym. As far as the vitamins go, really all I do is take a really good multi-vitamin. I have tried a lot of the other stuff in addition to it but for me, my body reacted better from the multi. Now, if there is some of those vitamins or minerals that you need for health reasons by all means, do what you need to do to stay healthy. I know that is a lot of information to receive all at once. I know sometimes I have the tendency to be a little overwhelming and very wordy. If there is anything that I need to be more clear on or if you need any other info, we are all here to give you suggestions for what has worked for each of us.

Thekidsmom - It is so great to have you back but I am glad you had a wonderful weekend with your DS. Those kinds of getaways are exactly what we need to recharge our bodies and minds. I am sure that we all will let our diets slide while we are on our vacation but that's part of why we do it. Right now, I know I have already lost more than what my original goal was but the way I look at it, the more I loose now. The more room I have to be able to cheat while at WDW. I don't know how far I will let it go but I know I will take some liberties. Of course, like everything else, once we get back to reality, reality hits us in the face. That sounded rude but it wasn't meant that way. Anyway, all that said, I am really glad that you were able to have that getaway.

Good Tuesday Morning all!!
1st I'd also like to welcome DVCkidsMom... :welcome: :rainbow: :welcome: :rainbow:
I have also tried every diet in the book, and finding which one really works for your personal body type is probably the most elusive task on earth! I too have tried SBD and could not stick to the regimented foods. But I have a friend who just loves it and have done it (modified of course) for nearly 2 years. Let us know how your progress comes.

Thekidsmom...Welcome back!! Sounds like you had a fabulous time as did the kids. I look forward to doing the same thing you did as well...eating whatever I want. I cannot wait to go, only 12 more days!!

Well, I did go to the gym yesterday but again could only do about 30 minutes. My body is not soft, in fact I feel slimmer than I did about 2 weeks ago, but my strength is just not what it was. I will keep going this week and most of next week and see how it goes. I'm not worried about it, I can only do what I can do.

As an update, I can pretty much eat normally everyday. Although my portions are ridiculously small (which I love but is still really weird) I don't limit myself to any foods which has been pretty cool. :smooth: For example, we went to a local restaurant that we all love. I always get a grilled chicken salad and normally eat almost the whole thing along with like 3 dinner rolls. We went last night and I literally ate 1 roll and 6 bites of salad and was completely stuffed. The only other thing I had the rest of the whole day was 3 Doritos and a 1/3 bowl of cereal. I was perfectly fed and was not hungry at all. It seems that I eat only twice per day now. I'll see how the next week comes at me.

Anyway, I'm off to the gym pretty soon, will let you know how it goes.

Bubba...I smile every time I think about your weight loss. I'm SO happy for you, you could never know! Keep up the great work!
Have a great day!!

Hey everyone! I thought I would give a quick tip of the day before I head into work. I couldn't remember if this had been posted before or not but it is still a good tip so here we go.

When dieting, always ty to eat most of your calories in the morning and during the daytime. For example, most of us would always be in a rush to get the kids ready for school and get ourselves ready for work in the morning that for breakfast we may eat a bagel and a cup of coffee. And then when we get home, we will normally eat a bigger dinner thinking that we have spared the calories so we have the room. But what actually happens is at night time, we become stationary. We have already done our exercise and we have done our jobs so we want to take some time to relax. This is why that big dinner is a no-no. Try eating a good breakfast and even a decent lunch but cut back on dinner. This will help you burn more calories during the day and night and of course, in dieting that is the goal.

Lionqueen - You really know how to make me feel good. Thank you for all of the kind words. I am really happy you are feeling better. As far as the strength, it will come back. I know my strength has diminished as well but that is because I have a problem in my rhomboid on the left side of my back. I have been to my Chiropractor a couple of times and I have another appointment next week but it just seems that the pain keeps coming back. I have really paid attention to my form at the gym to make sure I am not doing anything wrong but I still have the pain. I am just hoping that I don't have to go get a shot to get cleared up.

Last thing, I saw this last night at the gym and got really motivated. You know we, as a society, will always come up with excuses on why not to go to the gym and do our workouts. Well, last night there was a lady working out with one of the trainers. I didn't think anything of it until she got up to go to the next exercise. When she got up, she had to get her crutches. Apparently, she had sprained her ankle or something. She was walking gingerly but she was still doing the routine. Now, I have seen guys come in and out that were in wheelchairs all the time and they never had the same effect on me. I don't know if that will motivate anyone else but I thought I would share it with you.

Hope you have a great day!!
Bryan

Hey everyone! I hope all is well. I know everyone has lives outside of this thread but I have to be honest. I miss all of you when you don't post. I love hearing about your successes and your trials. But since no one has posted in a couple of days, I guess I will have a double post.

Tonight at the gym, I started talking to one of the trainers. This is a guy who has competed in bodybuilding and powerlifting competions for over 10 years. Plus, he has taken all of the certification tests and courses that you need. I asked him about how to really target my lower abs and loose that bodyfat that I still have there. I told him that I had been doing almost 100 hanging leg raises a night for the last couple of weeks and although I am tighter, I am not progressing the way I want. He showed me a couple of tricks that I am going to give a try. He also told me to give him a sample of my daily diet to see why I am holding onto the rest of this fatty tissue. So I am going to get back with him on Friday to see what he says. You know, we all feel like we eat pretty clean but there are always little things that we all miss every once in a while. He also said that for someone of my height, weight and size, I really need to loseonly about 7 more pounds. He said if I can get back down to about 185 that I should really see some abdominal definition. I will definitely keep you abreast of the progress.

I hope all of you are doing wonderful this week. It is over halfway over so we are in the downward trend. Let me send you all of my  and :grouphug: support.

Take care!
Bryan

It's Thursday morning and I feel fantastic...FINALLY!!

I hit the gym today and did my complete normal workout! 60 mins cardio on elliptical and 30mins strength training (arms). I did push myself a little harder to get it done, but it was not too strenuous and I feel FABULOUS!!

The best news is, that this lady I see nearly everyday (about as overweight as I am) walked in and her jaw dropped. She told me I looked great and what a different person I was becoming. I was SO thrilled to hear that I just wanted to hug her! The best thing is, that today, for the 1st time EVER, I wore a sleeveless tank top showing every bit of my arms. Mind you, I have not worn a sleeveless anything since 1999. I was very self conscious, but wanted to make sure I kept cool. She said my arms looked great.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to get the workout done and run home to tell all of you! I feel like I've conquered all my goals and worked by hinny off and it's all been great!

I still have 30+ lbs to lose, but feel so confident and proud that I've come this far. I cannot wait to hear how everyone else is doing. We are getting down to crunch time...10 days for me can you believe it?? Anyway, I'm getting so excited and just wanted to share with my DISfamily.

Have a GREAT day!!!

Well, I have been working out hard since I got back from Fort Wilderness. I am back down to 159lbs (lost the weight I gained on the trip) and am now working on shedding a few more pounds before our family trip to WDW on the 29th. I went out and splurged on some new clothes. It sure felt good to not have to shop in the "plus" size department! I bought a couple of jean shorts that are a size 12 and they are a little loose. Hurray! I havn't worn jean shorts since before I had kids, 9yrs now!!!! I have also lightened up on the weights I was lifting and doing more reps. I was lifting 15 to 20 lbs and my sister said that was too much for loosing weight, so I am using 5 lbs weights and doing 30 reps. How does that sound? Any suggestions? Thanks, everyone.

lionqueen-so glad to hear you are feeling better! I know how good it feel when someone notices the weight difference!

bubba-when are you taking the trainer certifications, I think you would make a great trainer!

I just rejoined WW online this week. I did it a couple of years ago but stupidly went off plan and gained it all back and more. So here we go again. We've going in October so hopefully I can have a significant loss before we go.

Lionqueen - That is fantastic. I am so excited for you. I have had those kinds of compliments from friends and family and it is really exciting. The bad part for us is that we are always looking at ourselves everyday so it is harder to see exactly how much we have changed. For example, when I started at the gym, I had a puny 11" bicep when flexed. Now, I am stretching the tape between 16.5" to 17" biceps. Now for some people, they would say that is big enough but I still "feel" like I look so small. I almost feel like unless I get my arms to 20" that I won't be happy. And that is from a guy who said he just wanted to put on 2 or 3" on his arms. That's why it is so good to have people that can see you every couple of weeks. That really helps. Nevertheless, I am so very excited for you.

Kidsmom - Congratulations goes back out to you as well. You have come back and really gotten back to work. Am I wrong or have you lost those three pounds in 3 days? That is dedication and intensity. That is fantastic work. As far as when I will be able to actually get my certification, it is going to take some time. All of the online courses that I have found, that are reputable, cost $300 - $500 for the course. I am going to have to get a few bills paid off before I can validate that kind of expense. Of course, I could ask for it as a Christmas present. You know! Get a lot of people who were planning on getting me a present and tell them just to pool the money together so I can go ahead and do it. I just don't think they will do that. But thank you :thanks: for the confidence boost.

Tiggerific711 - :welcome: to our little group. I am hoping sincerely that you will find motivation, inspiration and knowledge from our group. You have a bunch of people here who have one common goal. We all want to be thinner. Sure. We all want to be more active. No doubt. But the most important thing is we all want to be healthy. Everything that you will see here will be something that will be helpful in obtaining that goal. We are not going to recommend anything that is dangerous or even foolish. If you think about the Yoga mentality for just a moment, we can take something from that. Not only do we want you to be healthy physically but we also want you to be healthy mentally. We are a support group that understand that we all have tests and trials that get in our way or get us down. We have been there and we are still there. The best way to say it is we are a family here. Now, with all that said, I know you will be able to reach your goals. Stay dedicated. Stay motivated. I have had a phrase that I use for myself while I am at the gym doing cardio for an hour wanting to get off of that machine. "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!" If your prize is your vacation, then keep stuff in front of you that keeps that thought fresh in your mind. If your prize is getting into a smaller wardrobe, then buy something that you really want to put on and keep it out in the open so you have to see it every day. Do not hide it in the closet. That's when it is out of sight and out of mind. Not good. Keep your prize out in the open.

:woohoo: :grouphug: :cheer2:  :cheer2: :grouphug: :woohoo: :sunny:
On that note, I will say I hope you all have had a great week. I am excited about the great reports and I look forward to reading about more.

Talk to you soon!
Bryan

Bubba-almost,monday to thursday is four days. but still pretty good, I think most of the weight must have been water, I know I didn't loose 3 pounds of fat! LOL but my body is not used to eating so much salt, having popcorn and of course scrambled eggs with salt every morning and steak with salt at night I think really helped my body retain the water. Coming home on sunday and getting right back into a low salt diet helped get rid of the water, so now I can start working on the fat! I stop eating at 6pm every night so going to be with those hunger pangs I know my body is starting to use the fat for energy!

Good Friday morning all, we made it!! I don't know how the weather is where everyone lives, but here in Colorado it's a record breaker!! Should be over 85 degrees today and it is going to be magnificent!!

I am headed to the gym in about 10 minutes and have a much needed, renewed sense of dedication. I feel stronger and healthier and just happy to breathe the air. I hope everyone is having a SUPER day and a great start to the weekend.

I wanted to let you all know that I am down another swimsuit size   I got another new swimsuit yesterday and I feel really great in it. Of course I still look for the suit that hides all the imperfections, but not to be self conscious about my legs, tummy and arms is a freedom I cannot even explain. Just wanted to share.

Tiggeriffic... :welcome: :rainbow: :welcome: :rainbow: to our little ( and working to get littler) group. I cannot wait to hear about your successes and if you need anything at all, just let us know.

Have a great weekend all, YOU ROCK!!!
thelionqueen

I'm very proud of myself today. We had a little going away breakfast party for the head of our department who is leaving. There were Krispy Kreme donuts, coffee cake, cookies, apples and grapes. I stayed away from the donuts and had some apple slices instead. I just didn't want to use points on the donuts! Now if I can just get through the weekend!

Have a good weekend everyone! And thanks for the great welcome!

Hi all...I haven't posted all week because I have been really sick...a horrible cold. You moms know, though, there's no such thing as a sick day for us. I think I've probably gained a little this week because I have been eating comfort foods (ice cream to ease the sore throat, mac n cheese because DH made dinner instead of me, etc etc etc). Today I finally feel a little bit better! So back on the plan for me...I will still weigh in tomorrow, but I'm not expecting great things.

Welcome to Tiggerific711! I am also doing the WW points...I did the same thing that you did...lost a ton of weight with WW, went off the plan, & gained a lot of it back. I don't go to meetings, but I do count points at home & exercise. I'll be your WW "points pal" & we can compare notes. This board is very loving & supportive & I know you'll be happy you joined up.

Well, I hope everyone has a great weekend...I'll let you know my weigh-in as soon as I get up the courage to do it!

Allison

Thanks Blondealligator! It'll be great to have someone to go through this with. Everyone is so welcoming here, it'll make it easier to stay on plan if I have people to talk to. I was never comfortable posting on the message boards on the WW website but I can already tell I won't have that problem here!
