Did you enjoy gym class in school?

ACk! Parading naked by the gym teacher to say "shower", even worse, having to do it in your underwear and say "sponge", even worse, being a late bloomer and having the gym teacher ask you in front of everyone why you never say "sponge".

My oldest is in jr high now and he says that even though they "encourage" everyone to take showers, no one does.

I only took 'gym' in junior high, and I loved it. Not so much the changing in front of everybody, but the running and playing was great. I was student of the month a couple times.

In high school I was a cheerleader so I got out of it. I probably would have still liked gym, but they had to swim too, which I would not have liked if I had it mid-day.

Why does it seem like every gym class in America plays handball, yet we always suck at it in the Olympics? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I loved that sport in gym class!

Clearly our college programs are lacking ;)

Ugh, I hated it! I'm not coordinated, I didn't like sports, and I hate sweating! I'm so glad I'll never have to do a gym class again

I blame Title IX ;) :teeth:

Badminton is another example -- we should rule that sport with all the kids that have to play it. Darn it for no professional badminton tour, or I could have been rich!! :guilty: :guilty:

With the first pick overall in the draft, the New York Swatters pick....

Bob Slydell!

I hated it too, but mostly because of my gym teacher. Probably the best thing we did was square and line dancing. For some reason she loved aerobics so much, that's all we did...

Meanwhile the guys basically got to play whatever they wanted, playing hockey or flag football...

Are most gym classes co-ed now? My DD just started high school and her class is co-ed. They just finished up a 3-week unit on flag football and she said that the guys in the class would not throw the ball to any girls.

Yeah, for the most part I liked gym. Except for when we did swimming.

^ ^ My gym classes were coed.

Do they still do that sadistic thing in the upper grades where you are forced to shower!? I always saw that for what it was - a power/control thing rather than a true necessity.

:wizard:

I graduated high school in 1988 and they didn't do that then. I've been substitute teaching regularly at a local high school and it doesn't look like they do that either.

However, my DH graduated HS in 1981 and remembers the shower check. Something must have happened between 1981 and 1988.

It all depended on what we were doing. If it was archery I loved it. Hated swimming cause they insisted you had to dive off of the high dive and I have a fear of heights. gymnastics was ok too. So I guess I would say 50% of the time I liked it.

Most of the students in the high school I work at hate it-

Me? Enjoy Gym?

*wipes tears from eyes*

No, seriously...

I loved gym in elementary school -- dodge ball, tumbling, dance (sorry, I'm one who loved square dancing), that parachute thing... Back then, it was about playing more than about exercise.

Then I got to jr high and had the drill sgt. From then on, I've always HATED anything gym related. I was *so* happy that in HS, I could substitute Dance for gym for half the year.

To this day, I cringe at the word "gym".

I graduated in 1981 and there was no shower check. I would have been appalled and with my smart mouth, I'm sure I would have been telling them I wasn't taking part.

I hated gym class - our PE teacher made fun of you if you couldn't do the exercises or if you weren't very good at the sport he was teaching (which for me was all of them)!
Who would have thought --- all these years later --I am now a fitness instructor/ personal trainer! I never make fun of my participants!

Archery was my favorite too. In fact, it was the only gym activity I liked. Coach McPherson was an absolute joke! What a shell of a human being in horrible spandex shorts! My friends and I, however, had a blast making fun of him. ;)

This cracked me up for whatever reason.....wasn't this the quintessential gym teacher in all of our lives? :rotfl:

I do have the funniest gym teacher story...

When I was a senior, I worked at a CVS pharmacy right near my high school.

Teachers would come in all the time to buy things. One night, one of the female gym teachers came in to buy of all things, condoms! Yes, thats right, condoms! This was back in the 80's, when all this stuff was more hush, hush, hidden in the corner type things.. .

The funniest part not only ringing it up, but it was the requisite pack of gum you buy with that since you don't want to be known as the pervert that only buys condoms... especially a female gym teacher!

Okay, I just had to respond to this!

Frist of all, I grew up in and still live in the only state that REQUIRES 4 years of PE in High School (IL).
I was soooo lame in PE that when teams were picked it went like this - "You take Lisa (me) and we'll take the fat kid (not nice for sure)". The ONLY thing that I liked was swimming and that's becaue I realized that I could stay in "beginner" swimming for all 4 years and that meant that I would not have to get my fab Farrah Fawcett hairdo wet since we stayed in the shallow end and used kickboards. Although, the "loaner" swimsuits that we had to wear were even worse than the ugly one-piece uniforms that we also wore out of the water. (You read that right, they gave us swimsuits that supposedly had been cleaned since the last person wore it) :crazy2: :crazy2: I was glad that I never had swimming 1st hour because I'd have been just the type (dorky) that would have been "the scum breaker." That's the person that got pushed into the pool 1st thing to break the scum layer of hairspray, afrosheen, and makeup that had build up since the day before :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I once pretended that my glasses were broken for 6 weeks so I wouln't have to play basketball - those girls are really mean when you stink!

Also, I was the first class that went co-ed, so I had all these guy gym teachers who hated the girls. The first week I said something "smart" and the teacher said, "Drop and give me 20." My response of "20 what?" didn't go over well.

And here's the irony of this whole thing. I'm a substitute teacher and I mostly cover PE classes. Yep, that's me right back in PE!

I'm another one who had to wear a "bloomer" gym suit! Sooo ugly; doesn't everyone look lovely in maroon? :rotfl:

I actually didn't mind gym, even swim class every week. What I DID mind was the fact that the teachers would not let you go until the bell rang, and then you would have to run and change(forget drying your hair), then run to your next class, which was ALWAYS as far away as possible. I was always late after swim, until the year I had it last period. Then I just had to run for the bus with wet hair in a RI winter. (I used a swim cap; didn't help that much.)

I liked it in elem school (loved the rope climb!), but didn't so much in jr high, especially when doing an activity that I wasn't good at ( I remember playing baseball and being terrible). I don't remember it in high school, but we must have had it and I blocked it from my memory. LOL
