Did Macy's get a "Message"?

One of my major gripes about Macy's taking over Filenes was the lack of discounts for shoppers without a Macy's card. I had been told repeatedly that Macy's would not be offering coupons to non charge card customers. What is on the back of the front section of todays Hartford Courant?? A coupon for 15%. It might make me wander back in. In fact it will. I still have $80 left on a gift card.

Macy's always has coupons in the paper. Never heard of them not offering discounts to non card holders. :confused3

Me neither, I haven't had a Macy's card in at least 10 years and I always use coupons. Half the time I forget to bring them and the cashier gives me one. :confused3

I saw the coupon yesterday in the Washington Post. I did notice that it could not be used on any of their sale items that were shown in the paper. That stinks.

So if Macy's has taken over Filines are they still going to have that bridal event like they used to?

That is weird. Usually their coupons are good for everything except for a few select name brand things but that is a deal with the manufactures, not Macys (Liz Claiborne and Ralph Lauren come to mind).

I hate Macy's, coupons or not. I just wish they would bring back Hechts. Or my beloved Woodies. :( :(

The coupons rarely work for anything not on sale. It doesn't work on designer brands, or what they call Every Day Value things. EDV's are priced as low as they will go and usually have a red sign above it.

Macy's has coupons, just not as often as the May Company stores.

I just noticed last week (obviously, I don't get to a Mall very often) they actually tore down the old L.S. Ayres store at the Mall nearest me. I've seen store close now and then but I can't remember ever seeing a Mall physically shrink.

That wasn't Filene's. That was Filene's Basement -- a completely separate company, which is actually still in business.

Wow, there is a blast from the past when I was a kid - you must live in the DC metro area.

That happened at one of the malls near me too. They've got some idea of putting in small outdoor shops in it's place. :confused3 I'm wondering if they have the same plans for that mall near you.

Well, that's how the Hecht's coupons worked. The coupon worked on everything but Ralph Lauren, Docker's, Coach, and Royal Doulton china and stuff like that. But this one had the coupon in the ad and then in the ad itself they had several items on sale. Below each item it said "Coupon cannot be used on this item."

I've never gotten over the loss of Woodies.

My wife works at Macy's so this is what she told me...

Most of Macy's coupons only work if you use your Macy's Card.
You may have to look at the small print on the coupon itself to see if it says must use Macy's card.
It will also flag at the register and the salesperson will tell you if you need to use your Macy's card if the case may be to honor the coupon.
The coupon does not work on items that have a price with the last number ending in an 8 (usually EDV Every Day Values) or a manufacturer who will not allow lower discounts such Polo/Lauren etc.. --names are usually listed on coupon

More coupon's are mailed to the cardholder than will appear in the paper.
Also Macy's have several Customer Appreciation Days each month on select items (signs would be posted above the item) you will get additional 10-15-20% off an item if you use your credit card and there would not even be a coupon available. The more you use your card you will earn reward points from further discounts to freebies in the store, such as gift wrapping, percentage back (1-2%), reward dollars ($10-$25 off a certain amount of purchase).

Hope this helps..

Thank you Chuck. I think I should print out this page so I can go shopping. I still have $80 left on my gift card. In fact there are more disclaimers on the newspaper coupon that I almost need a magnifying glass to read them. ;)

I know they did that at Greenwood, are you talking about Castleton? Man I need to get out more.

Yes, Castleton. It's a mess over there. If they don't clear it up soon it will be worse than usual for Christmas season!

I think Macy's got a message to send their buyers to go out and look for the ugliest stuff imaginable. I HATE that store. I want Filene's back sooooo bad. :sad2:

I hate our Macy's that was formerly Burdines. The clothing section is a mess, I can never find anything and the store is always 100 degrees. Coupons or not the Macyfication of the department store world sucks.
