Debt Dumpers 2022

Beginning of July Update
$2000 $1000 Maternity leave cushion -
1/1: $750
7/1: $1000
Complete

Baby/Maternity Items -
1/1: Didn't exist
7/1: Still positive
Changing the reporting a bit since this doesn't have an actual goal - just to not run out haha

$35,000 $20,000 Barn savings -
1/1: $6779
7/1: $27,048 (+$20269 change since beginning of year)
DH had another commission payout. I also got a few hundred dollars in backpaid overtime - if you saw the big Kronos outage in Dec/Jan my workplace was caught up in that. I'm also expecting a few hundred in July from our Q1 bonus, you have to complete certain things each quarter so I did finish the first before my maternity leave.

Grocery/Eating out budget -
Grocery June: 16% OVER
Months under budget: πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™ƒ πŸ™ƒ
Eating Out May: 3% OVER
Months under budget: πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™ƒ
June was better in paying attention to groceries overall, but we ended up moving our nebraska trip up 2 weeks to attend a funeral so we lost all of our produce and leftovers we were planning to eat, which was part of the groceries. We ate out more in June also, partly with the Nebraska trip, but this category still had a buffer from all of our months under. We also had TWO date nights haha of dinner/movie

Budget Meetings - minimum monthly
Months with meetings: πŸ™ƒ πŸ™‚ πŸ™ƒ πŸ™ƒ πŸ™ƒ πŸ™ƒ
Still not doing well here

We ended up having family over her3 for the 4th and did steaks and chicken. So no plan to cook until at least tomorrow, which would be something minimal to keep using bbq leftovers πŸ˜‚ otherwise chugging along. I need to reschedule my grandpas visit for thus month since it was over the funeral time originally- it was one of my grandmas sisters who passed. My husband's brother may come from California at the end of the month - I hope so as his daughter is exactly one year older than ours, and I'd love for the cousins to meet! And we haven't seen them since last July. We're also planning on Nebraska again in August and Orlando in September. Usually I plan months out but am behind with the baby so need to start working on those!

Beginning of June Update
$2000 $1000 Maternity leave cushion -
1/1: $750
6/1: $902 (+$152 change since beginning of year)
I adjusted my goal back to $1000 as now that I'm officially on leave, I can calculate out exactly what I'll miss... which is about $275 but we'll be over cautious lol. On track to finish next month

Baby/Maternity Items -
1/1: Didn't exist
6/1: $1183
I've been putting 10% of additional income in here, then taking what I needed for the Maternity leave goal. I got some things returned in May which helped this, though I also spent some more which I need to calculate out still, so I expect this will go down a few hundred bucks. We also decided that any cash we got for shower gifts or after baby arrived would go to a savings account for her, so I pulled a bit out of here for that too.

$35,000 $20,000 Barn savings -
1/1: $6779
6/1: $22,205 (+$15426 change since beginning of year)
DH had a commission payout again so everything got a good boost and put us over the original $20k goal here so I've upped it to $35k.

Grocery/Eating out budget -
Grocery May: 52% OVER
Months under budget: πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™ƒ
Eating Out May: 40% remaining
Months under budget: πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚
We did take the baby out to eat twice but once was for DHs birthday so my in laws covered that. And some pickup meals again.
Groceries πŸ™ˆ haha. Yup, we spent 1.5x the budget. Lots of grocery pickups again. I cut out dairy for a bit so that has meant buying some more expensive substitutes and also I can't have a lot of the things we prepped ahead of time. And the generic rise in prices I'm sure. I just had a sams order last week so maybe this month will look better overall, and eventually we can eat the prepped food lol. I can't be too upset overall since we were at/under budget the first 4 months.

Budget Meetings - minimum monthly
Months with meetings: πŸ™ƒ πŸ™‚ πŸ™ƒ πŸ™ƒ πŸ™ƒ
Haven't been good about these still. Need to. Was just tallying with DH the other much about his coworker having purchased 2 new cars, going on expensive trips, etc. I reminded him that not only does he not know their whole picture, but we're also doing well and have had a lot of savings, etc. He gets more out of touch with it if he's not seeing the numbers - like the barn savings alone this year would cover a nice chunk of a new car. I also am the one looking at our annual income monthly to make sure our tax withholding is on track, which is difficult with his commissions. So he often only looks at his commission statements and that's all. The other day he said he didn't know how much I was making while on Maternity leave 😬 So priority for this month!

For June my grandpa is coming to visit, I'm using points to fly him out here so he doesnt know the true cost πŸ˜‚ Its just so easy to go out of my hometown airport went drive an hour when we have plenty of credit card points. That's what they're for! Then I'm assuming to try and get back there at the end of the month so friends and family can meet the baby. Dreading gas costs but πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Other plans for the month include starting a 529, find out our state matches $1000 in contributions per year the first 5 years. Also want to determine a set amount we contribute monthly and then I'll probably "backdate" it to April. And I'm working my way through a house deep clean slowly. Also we, well DH, have been doing some home projects which so far have been cashflowed from extra money but if needed I plan to cash out some of my credit card points for them. I'm also doing a bit of a wardrobe overhaul, nothing too crazy but I'm getting rid of a bunch of old things, getting rid of socks and just buying more of the kind I like, that sort of thing. Most "new" clothing is gotten the last 5 years was from Disney trips, and I worked a ton of weekends. I switched to my no weekends position Fall 2020 so didn't get much new stuff then, and then got pregnant last fall so my body is a little different now. So I've got lots of worn out or won't fit again items to get rid of, and I'll probably end up with a few new things too. May use credit card points too πŸ˜‚

Baby has gotten super alert in the last week which has been very fun 😍 but sometimes makes it hard to do anything because she is demanding to be carried around and face out to see things πŸ˜‚

Stopping by...
We are still chugging along. We're still managing to pay our regular cc off each month and now our truck fund is just over $10k.
Dh's check engine light is on again and July is inspection month for him. (For some reason I thought it was August.) His coworker is going to try something else to correct what is making the light turn on. I renewed his registration asap which has come in the mail and told him, as soon as the light goes out, quick run through inspection, before it comes back on again.

We are doing a short cruise in mid September. Looking forward to that.
I am so desperate for a beach day. Monday is looking like good weather for that so we'll probably get up early and take a day trip. :beach: It's only about an hour drive for us. I got a new beach umbrella last year and never even got to use it last summer.

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans. :flower3::shamrock: :drinking1

Take care everyone and be safe out there. :goodvibes :grouphug:
Just a thought - and someone may have already suggested this - auto parts stores like AutoZone or O'Reily's will be able to tell you what the error code is that is making the check engine light come on (for free). Sometimes it is just a simple fix and other times, of course, something more expensive. But it beats taking it to just any old mechanic to have them potentially charge you or even upsell you on something. I'm not sure where you live, but hopefully you can find a place to run that diagnostic for free.

Good reminder. My husband does this for one of our older cars. It has a bad tire sensor and our check engine light has been on/off for a few years and it's always the tire sensor. It's silly. Glad we don't have vehicle inspections where we live.

His place of employment has enough trucks that it has its own truck shop. Dh is friends with some of the mechanics who can check the codes and of course not charge him, since they don’t serve the public anyway. Last time he worked on it, the light stayed off for for a few months then came back.
Funny that pp mentioned the tire pressure alert system. He currently has his spare tire on. Maybe it’s related to that.

It could be the spare and the TPS system. You can usually find some good info on the web if you search your car model/year and check engine issues if it's common.

It's been a weird month. Sold the car, so no more car payment. Insurance went down $80.
For a few months we had been working crazy hours. Now that the car payment is gone, DH has been in this weird mood where he really wants me to be able to stay home with the kids. I'd love it too, and it's kind of led to me scheduling off like, one day a weekend (I only work 3 days a week). So basically my checks have been garbage. We're surviving, but not thriving like we should be. I have next weekend scheduled off for little man's first birthday, but I'm going to suck it up and go in on Saturday. And at the end of the month, my aunt will be at our house for the weekend, so I'm off then as well, but think I might be able to go in after I get her to the airport Monday.

In other weird news, on a whim we decided to see if we would qualify for a home loan. Together we were not approved, but DH was approved solo for $150k. We locked in our rate for 120 days to see if we can find one we like, while simultaneously saving up the down payment amount. If I actually get my butt to work, it should be easy to have it in a couple months.

My little garden is also finally starting to produce! I have a bunch of hot peppers about ready to pick, a few zucchini growing, and my cucumbers and beans have vined like crazy! Can't wait to get some fresh grown produce in the house and try my first ever experiment with canning.

I live in the wrong dang state if there are houses available for $150k lol. Sending good vibes your way that you're able to find something you guys like!
Not in Cali. Like NYC, incomes and COL are much higher than average.
Or maybe they imply the buyer would need a huge DP in order to buy.

Do you have bad credit/low score? Why would you being on the mortgage make it impossible? I would think showing 2 incomes would help, not hurt.

I have really bad credit. Working on it, but it's taking its time going up.

Also, for those wondering, we're in Oklahoma. Lower COL state and we have decent paying jobs. They may not be the most amazing houses ever, but we're both good with diy projects.

This could be due to many factors. For example, when my husband and I were looking to buy the home we live in now, he owned the house we lived in at the time and I owned a beach house being used as an off season rental property from around the time we were married. Our past 3 years of tax returns showed income for 2 years for me but only the earliest year was full-time income; the most recent one had no income for me and the one in between had only a half year of income for me. We also had 1.5 years of daycare costs on the returns.

We couldn’t get approved together without selling off one of the other houses because I still had a mortgage on the beach house. Even though the rental income from the off season easily covered the mortgage and expenses for the year, and I had an excellent credit score, I was deemed too risky due to not having a job. We ended up buying this house with just my husband on it since, that way, we didn’t have to worry about selling the beach house or the house we were living in (with an infant, a toddler, and 2 larger dogs). Even though he was the person approved (due to his income increasing across the 3 years of tax returns), I was the one who put down the full down payment on this house.

We bought the crappiest house in the nicest neighborhood we could afford. It was so ugly and in need of updating. Dh would say β€œIt’s got good bones. Just needs some lipstick and rouge.”
Just painting the exterior, replacing soffits, gutters and garage door, and doing some landscaping made a world of difference.

Total strangers would knock on our door just to say how much they loved what we did, it was such an eyesore before, etc.
We made a wish list of everything we could think of that we’d want, honestly thinking we never get to the big things at the end of the list like a new kitchen and converting the screened back porch into an office. 26 years later we got through our list and had to go back and repeat the earlier upgrades.

My long-winded point, if you don’t mind diy projects and your dh is handy, you can really save a lot of money up front by getting something that needs some TLC.

My nephew left to return to Florida yesterday. So enjoyed having him and my heart broke when he left. We spent SOOOOOO much money. I've mentioned before that both of his parents are worthless so when I have him I try to do as much as I can. Got him an eye appt and eyeglasses (he was blind as a bat!). Took him to the dentist and got three cavities filled and his teeth cleaned. I haven't had him for longer than a couple of days when we are at Disney or on vacation since 2006, so it was good to have the time to get stuff done he needs. I believe we will get to fly him to spend 2 weeks with us every summer going forward so at least I can get things checked yearly which is not as good as they should be, but better than what they have been. Also got him a tracphone. He is 12 so now we have a way of maintaining contact with him more than random phone calls with his mom.

Because of all the money, I am not doing anything but being home the rest of the summer! Actually kind of excited about it as I want to declutter and organize so now is as good a time as any. We will be back in Disney in February so will see my nephew then but we need to save up some money!

He is so blessed to have you as his aunt!

What a great reason to have spent all that money though. He is so lucky to have you in his life.
