D-Day Invasion- "Strange"-ly Imminent!! TRIP REPORT IS UP!!

Ah rats!!! I hate when I run into trouble like that- ie. Amazon and iTunes!! It really makes me feel frustrated when I want to do something like that and can't.

I am really excited to see what you have come up with in your efforts though. I 'll be interested to see how very far off the mark I am. :rotfl2: I wish I had friends in all the WS countries to help me out!! (There's so much that we share, that's it's time we're aware, It's a Small World afterall....)

I have no idea what was going on, I was supposed to enter an "Admin password" and I pretty certain that that's not normal. :confused3

I don't think you are that far off the mark - I think most of the WS music isn't the music people from that country listen to a daily basis. And those things tourists expect tends to be the traditional stuff.

However, I was quite surprised to see the "Watch on the Rhine" (Wacht am Rhein) on the playlist for Germany - this is a patriotic song which isn't popular anymore because it is connected with the kind of patriotism that lead to WW I and WW II and especially the so-called "German-French heriditary hostility" which no longer exists. If you want to know more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Wacht_am_Rhein

Man you guys are chatty! I vow to do better - someone PM me if you don't see me for a few days!

Great to see you posting again! :thumbsup2

One of the things I am VERY much looking forward to for this trip is the variety of scents Disney entices and excites us with. Who doesn’t love to walk down Main Street and get a thrill from the odor of popcorn, fresh baked cookies and marigolds?? I know, weird, huh? But marigolds is the one scent that IMMEDIATELY transports me back to the tender young age of 9 when I’d go with my family to Disneyland. The landscaping staff loves to stuff marigolds in their constantly tended beds, changing them out as soon as a sparrow poops on them, or a kid who’s had a tad too much of The Happiest Place on Earth vomits on them (which is one scent I am not looking forward to). Don’t laugh, I’ve seen it happen. There’s the slightly “old water” smell of the Rivers of America, of which you can get a whiff of on both the Liberty Belle and the Jungle Cruise, and of course, my other favorite, the moldy smell of the Pirates!! NOTHING beats that!!

Greasy food from the CS places, where a ton of fries goes out the door every day, wafts around to tantalize the hungry, and does a fairly good job at yanking one’s money right out of their park bag. It’s amazing, really, if you think about it- the power of the olfactory sense. What other sense can recall to mind so quickly the things we’d so long ago blocked from our consciences?? And so quickly causes one to do something so detrimental to one’s trip budget?

Case in point:

Many months ago, I came across a Trip Report; I’m pretty sure it was TK writing about her recent musings on Heidi’s tradition of “The Scent of the Trip”. I immediately latched onto it and decided right then that that was something I WAS GOING TO DO! But what scent? What medium? How was this going to play out practically speaking?? I needed a plan, and plans take time to formulate. And I’m not a shopper by nature- you all know that. So, here we are July 9th, about 6 months (or more) after I’d first read about this fabulous idea and have just now, literally put feet to the fantasy. Well, fingers really, because all my shopping is internet shopping, and that is done with fingers.

Anyway, I decided to go with………….

SCENTS

as in plural. I mean why go with only one of a good thing?? And I had a great starting place. Remember that fateful day, when our Regional Leaders paid us a visit and told us that they we really needed to go back to the US earlier than planned to get some rest, and get some intervention for our son? The day that changed our lives significantly over night! Well, they had come from Thailand, and as a hostess gift they had brought me some Jasmine lotion. It is some powerful potion, my friends. I’ve kept it in my wardrobe for a while, and it has released its stink into every corner, so that every time I open it, I get a blast of jasmine right in the face. Now it’s in my park bag waiting for its REAL purpose- a trip to WDW, where it has permanently transformed a Rubbermaid packing tub into a traveling massage parlor in a box.

I imagine you have guessed that Jasmine is indeed one of the “Scents of the Trip”. But for which portion, you may ask. Well, the only obvious portion, of course- for the POLY!! It’s tropical and it’s sweet; practically perfect for an island kind of stay. So the lotion was my starting point, but only lotion? No way! I did a little shopping today, and came up with a few more goodies to round out my jasminic experience.

The bathbomb was $5.95- a little pricey for a handful of chemicals that probably costs $.35 cents to make. But, that just proves my point. These ideas of smelling great, can yank a hard-earned dollar right out of your fist. But I do look forward to relaxing in a warm tub of flowery aroma after a long day at the park.

Now, I realized after I hit the purchase button that shipping was going to cost my left eye, and quickly thought to my materialistic self, that if I could find a few more of the things on my list, I’d only get gouged once, by one company. So I did. And I’ll tell you about those things later- on Scent updates # 2 and 3. (You didn’t really think I’d give you ALL my secrets in one day, did you?) So….

Most of the things I bought came from here:

https://www.bestbathstore.com/

The next item that made the Jasmine cut was this bar of soap; a little round ovoid hunk of oils and lye (with some jasmine thrown in to lure the consumer) that promises to instill many happy Disney memories for years to come. I hope it delivers, because this sucker was $4.25.

If you’re interested in where you can spend too much money on soap, here’s the website address I got mine at.

What are your favorite smells at Disney? What scents do you immediately think of that transport you right back there to relive a few of those Magic Kingdom memories??

I have no idea what was going on, I was supposed to enter an "Admin password" and I pretty certain that that's not normal. :confused3

That IS weird!! An admin password??!! Strange, indeed! Rebekah's FB account was hacked a couple weeks ago, and I had to help her fix it last night. Change of password, security settings, etc... What a PITA!!! And SHAME on that person doing that!!

I think you are right. Tourists want to see the traditional things of a country, and often from LONG bygone years. I imagine that some might see the US as the land of the cowboy and Native American, Lumberjacks and tall tales, and that's that they'd expect from a touristy spot like Disney- A la Frontier Land. So, I guess that's how it is with the music too. So, I didn't think I was too far off, as we tourists "know" Germany for lots of beer, liederhosen (spelled wrong I'm sure), and oom-pa-pa polkas. Of course, we think also of cuckoo clocks, sausages, and Oktoberfest too.

I love seeing the playlists, but got frustrated everytime I'd go there, as you can't buy most of it. :headache: How silly!

I think Jasmine is a perfect fit for the Poly!! :goodvibes And I love the shopping you did.

I absolutely agree on the pirates scent. Actually, for me there is a distinctive "Disney water scent" - I think it is this mixture of mold and clorine. Katharina and I noticed it during our first DL trip in 1992 and ever since that reminds me of Disney in a good way!

Besides that my favourite scent is the one of the AKL Jambo lobby. Some people say it is the food from Boma, but I think that they actually burn some special wood in the big fireplace, it has a rather smoky undertone. I love it and I once came across it in a "World food" restaurant in London where it seemed to come out of the air system. So I think it might actually be a designed scent... ;) Still, after staying at AKL three times, that scent means home to me.

The problem with the playlists is that the titles are all translated into English. I am sure that most of these you would be able to buy if you have the German title (which was part of what I was trying to do in my post...). Of course some titles are so generic like Bavarian Landler (Bayerischer Ländler) or Minuet in G that without the composer you are lost.

You are absolutely right in how German tourists see the USA! :thumbsup2 Oh and it's Lederhosen (leder is leather and hosen are trousers) and not Liederhosen (Lieder are songs)! :rotfl:

Shopping is not my forte, but I did have fun. I wished I could have found EVERYTHING at one place, so as to have reduced the shipping costs, but oh, well. What can ya do?

That's exactly what I'm talking about! A sort of unique mixture only found in WDW! I've never been to another water park that has just THAT smell. The Pirates musty odor will always hold a special place in my heart from my days as a CM there in DLR. AHhhhhhhhh....:cloud9:

I"m sure I'll come back with a few of those new "homey" smells too. I know what the Poly "smells" like, but not POP or the POR.

You're right!! That may be the problem! I need the songs in the native langauges and composers too. But others like the BGM loop from the Seas is simply not for sale.

You are absolutely right in how German tourists see the USA! :thumbsup2 Oh and it's Lederhosen (leder is leather and hosen are trousers) and not Liederhosen (Lieder are songs)! :rotfl:

OK, now I really want to see SONG PANTS!! :lmao::lmao::lmao: It may be next fashion craze- folks, you saw it here first! :rotfl2:

Oh my gosh! What a beautifully written passage, my dear!

Your description of some of your favorite sights and smells just puts me right there. I've been having a horrible time with not having a trip planned lately, and part of me is waffling. Can I take a three month old to Disney while I'm on maternity leave? LOL

Anyway, I know that one of the smells that always puts me right in the mood for vacation is actually not in Disney World, but right when I step off the plane in the Orlando airport. It's Florida air, and dagnabit, it smells different!

Much along that vein, every resort hotel has its own smell, and so depending on where I'm staying, I enjoy that as well. There's nothing like walking into the Wilderness Lodge and just knowing that it smells like home. :goodvibes

This is one aspect of the trip that I'm really hoping will help me slow down, focus on the details, relax, if you will. Disney is about so much more than hitting the coasters as many times as you can, it's about the total experience. At least this trip is- for me. I really want it to be a total multi-sensory extravaganza for body and soul.

I am looking forward to discovering just WHAT those scents ARE at each resort- I'm sure each one will be so different and stimulating in a different way!!

I know you're really struggling with no trip planned, TK! Do you think the quickie down there to cheer on Tink will work out?? That'd be so perfect, to remember your mom and be a tribute to her, in a small way. Think about it. If you need to do it, please DO!

Meantime, glad you're here, and I can in some small way, take you back there! ;):goodvibes

Loving the scents theory. Awesome.

I had to laugh at the river smell, there totally is one. I even think the big lake out in front of Magic Kingdom has a distinct smell to it as well. Of course I love all of those scents.

What do you think I'm going to do?? Virtually whip her??:lmao:
To paraphrase a common saying we have at work; The virtual beatings will continue until morale improves!

I was thinking cinnamon rolls, but that's just me.:)

One of DW's personal favorites!!
and of course, my other favorite, the moldy smell of the Pirates!! NOTHING beats that!!
You are right, smells can have a powerful affect on your memory. I can't often identify them but I do recognize that I have experienced them before (to build on a common theme in this thread, It's a man thing). There is a smell that hits me every time I'm on PotC that I'm not sure what it is, but I always remember it. I get it strongly when going through the mist where they project Davy Jones.

I'm thinking popcorn::. For some reason, Disney popcorn just smells different to me!

Is it wrong that most of the smells that remind me of WDW revolve around food? Must be another "man thing."

Jasmine is so perfect for the Poly.
I agree that each place in Disney has a distinct scent. Popcorn on Main Street is my fav :goodvibes

It DOES smell different, NO doubt about it! And I think I'm safe to say we ALL love ALL these smells, and wish we could take them home with us!

Let this be a warning to you all!! If lurking continues, there will be MORE virtual beatings!! I'd say the morale for those who do post is pretty darn high.

I was thinking cinnamon rolls, but that's just me.:)

You know what?! I almost went with cinnamon rolls. That or waffle cones...

I think they pipe in gun powder smoke there. If I'm not mistaken. maybe you identify with being all tentacally?? :confused3

I'm thinking popcorn::. For some reason, Disney popcorn just smells different to me!

You know it, baby!!

Is it wrong that most of the smells that remind me of WDW revolve around food? Must be another "man thing."

Nope, not a man thing. A freakishly bizarre Disney-phile thing.

Jasmine is so perfect for the Poly.
I agree that each place in Disney has a distinct scent. Popcorn on Main Street is my fav :goodvibes

I think a lot of folks are going to say popcorn. I'm not a big fan of it myself having worked in a theater, but it does scream Main street nonetheless...

Jasmine is perfect for the Poly. I was going to say either that or something with coconut.

You know I love Disney smells. Some of my favorite include: That "Disney" water smell, the smell at the Poly, the smell at the GF, and the smell on Main Street from the candy shop and the bakery!

I'm hoping so. I'm really emotionally stunted since my mom passed, and I mean it in the sense that I'm unable to make any big decisions.

It took me weeks to decide to start my FMLA early. It's funny, normally, I'm very decisive, but I waffle over everything now. My primary concern is really how the baby is and how I can orchestrate being gone while he's so little. It's possible we could turn it into a family trip, but we'll just have to see how things pan out. I'd love to go, but one day at a time.

Heck, one moment to the next. :lmao:

Meantime, glad you're here, and I can in some small way, take you back there! ;):goodvibes

Me, too!

I love the picking of scents for your trip! I'll admit though that I tend to be a bit oblivious about the scents of places. :) I'll pick up on a few, but most of the time I'm more in tune with the sounds.

I think a lot of folks are going to say popcorn. I'm not a big fan of it myself having worked in a theater, but it does scream Main street nonetheless...

I don't blame you on this one. After working at a theater for over 20 years I can completely tune out the scent of popcorn.

OK, I will PM you and bug you, if you go MIA anymore!! Life must be very busy for you! I hope it's busy in all kinds of good and fun ways.

DIS Radio has improved their lineup since I last streamed it, so I'm loving that! That's the same disc set I have!! I LOVE IT!! I just wish it had the ORIGINAL Tiki Room song, not the Under New Management one POC!!

Life is busy and work is crazy busy but part of the problem is my type a personality. Once I get behind on my subscribed threads then I think I can't be on the boards until I have the time to get caught up on all of them which would take hours and hours which of course I never have and so I avoid and then get further behind and the vicious cycle repeats! Way more than you needed to know! :lmao: Anyhoo - I have decided to just get caught up on one at a time and take it day by day.

Glad you have those cd's! I was going to try to figure out how to copy them and get them to you. I would love it if there was a set of 4 with one for each park so we could have more of the park songs!

LOL ... glad I didn't get any of those PMs!

I'm still trying to figure out what the heck is going on over here!:lmao:

What do you think I'm going to do?? Virtually whip her??:lmao:

I did ask for the PM's so I brought the whipping on myself!

Great to see you posting again! :thumbsup2

Thank you!

I think a lot of folks are going to say popcorn. I'm not a big fan of it myself having worked in a theater, but it does scream Main street nonetheless...

I was going to say popcorn! I am not really a scent person - not that I don't enjoy scents but I don't typically notice them and associate them with certain places. I am more sounds/visual things.

Gotta get back to work as the mountain of paper on my desk is staring me down as I type! Have a great day everyone!

Well, Geez, if you look at THAT way... But I know SOMEONE who's doing BOTH!!!!! but she hasn't been around for AGES!! Anyone know where Jen is??

No. I was just thinking that also.

Oh, and I was wondering about Jen today as well.

I'm actually getting a wee bit concerned. I haven't seen her on FB either!! Doubly concerning because she and Bubba had something uber special planned for after the MEET. But I'll let her tell that story in her own way. I really hope everything is ok with her!!

WHERE IS JEN??

I'm here! I'm here! I took a small DIS absence due to reasons I posted on my PTR. And BOY do I have a LOT to catch up on over here and on Glen's TR. I'm hoping everything is set straight by the end of the month. Liesa, I hope to still come for the meet at the end of August. It will all depend on my potential new job and its requirements. I promise to keep you posted!

I love the scents! Yes...the water smell. So distinctive. Odd and yet, in a good way! Musty pirates, absolutely!

Popcorn. Cinnamon Rolls.

Breathing in, in my mind.

:thumbsup2 for Jasmine. You might be scary let loose in Basin!

You know I love Disney smells. Some of my favorite include: That "Disney" water smell, the smell at the Poly, the smell at the GF, and the smell on Main Street from the candy shop and the bakery!

I actually contemplated coconut as well, but since I already had the Jasmine lotion, I figured I'd sock it away, (ie, not use it anymore) until the trip.

I had totally forgotten about the candy shop smell!! Good one!! :thumbsup2

And the fact that you're cognizant enough to recognize the sum total of what a trip really is means you're going to enjoy it all the more.

My camera will help with the visuals, just as I think these scents will help me remember to "notice" the smells.

I'm really interested to see what kind of a description you write when you get back! :goodvibes

I have many, MANY plans for lots of writing!!

I'm hoping so. I'm really emotionally stunted since my mom passed, and I mean it in the sense that I'm unable to make any big decisions.

It took me weeks to decide to start my FMLA early. It's funny, normally, I'm very decisive, but I waffle over everything now. I am guessing this is because you don't have that "go to" person anymore, than you can call and ask for input. While you may not have consciously realized it, she probably helped you make those decisions by just listening. :confused3 No one can ever replace her, but in time, you'll find another confidant you can bounce those thoughts off of.
