There's a rumor President Biden is going to announce today that the government is going to send out an at home test kit to every American. Announcement around 230P ET.

I do not know any other details.

He's making 500 million at home tests available to US households. You have to go to a specific website to request them.

My vaccinated girl got sick the week before Thanksgiving. I was freaked out that she had the Rona, so I got her tested right away through the county. Thankfully, it was negative, so it was just a cold. She still stayed out of school the next week because the district doesn't want kids with any symptoms mimicking covid, and there are no allowances for negative covid tests. It seemed silly at a certain point, but I fully understand why they are cautious. Even colds can cause chaos!

We all got tested yesterday because everyone in my household, including our two-year-old, is sick with *very* Covid-like symptoms. Turns out that we all have RSV, very likely the two-year-old got it first and then spread it around to the rest of us.Talking to my doctor on the phone yesterday, he said that RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is very prevalent this year, and that it's usually kids who get it and that it can be very serious or very mild. So far everyone is only ill like a moderate head cold, but we're keeping a watchful eye on DJ because lots of kids wind up in the hospital from this.

This will probably end up cancelling the Christmas Eve party, which makes me happy.

For everyone on this thread who is dealing with Covid, please take care of yourselves and I hope you're better soon. Sending my good vibes to you all.

If you can get some home tests. I keep them on hand at all times they are pretty easy to use. Our Walgreens has drive thru testing as well.

My mom and stepdad got it but they were about 8 months out from vax number two. They are both very medically fragile and neither ended up in the hospital or worse so I call that a win.

Hope you feel better soon.

I have a stack of the at home tests. So much better than going into the doctor for every sniffle. We also use them to test before getting together with people outside our household. I know they aren’t 100% accurate, but they are very convenient.

This is correct. It's not that he's just willy nilly sending to 500 million of these tests out. They are creating a website (so I would expect it to crash at some point too) for people to go to to request their test, the Fed government will then send it out for free.

It's basically just supposed to be the opposite of the current structure where you purchase it then seek reimbursement later from your insurance company.

That said the press release I saw is that the capacity is presently at about 600 million tests per month and it was said about half of that is coming from at home. So the purchase of 500 million is hardly much.

This is a boon to give access to a test to be sent for free but it's nowhere near the levels we need. I actually don't know if I read if there will be a cap on how many you can request. Is it one per person? Several per household? It's better than nothing but it shouldn't be looked at as "whew this is amazing!" because it's really a tiny tiny patch in the grand scheme. Not trying to poo poo on the parade here because it is something at least.

ETA: From the White House press release: "Today, the President is announcing his Administration will purchase a half-billion at-home, rapid tests this winter to be distributed for free to Americans who want them, with the initial delivery starting in January 2022. The Administration will stand up a website where Americans can go to get at-home tests delivered to their home—for free."

I hope you are feeling ok.

Two of my kids were sick on different college campuses in November, DH is waiting for results but thinks he has a cold, and oldest DD woke up yesterday with fever/sore throat but feels better today. All kids tested negative for Covid and flu, all vaxx, oldest is ICU nurse. There still seems to be other viruses floating around.

Adding an update 12/21 8:21. DH's PCR test had to be redone. Now he thinks some liquid must have spilled from the test tube.

I found some at home tests, he is positive. DS and I are negative, knock on wood. Ever since he said his throat felt scratchy, I did not sleep in our bed or use that bathroom. I have been wiping down all knobs and anything he might touch. I just didnt want to pass a cold around since we were supposed to have family drive to us.

He's been using santizer and now is confined to our room.

Vax Moderna/booster Nov.
His symptoms -
Friday night - scratchy throat
Sat- like beginning of cold, sneezing mild headache
Sun thru now- little bit of sneezing and congestion, mild cough, slight hoarse voice. He says he has felt ok, I think he seems to be sneezing more today so that is different than a typical cold.

He has HBP so thankful it seems mild. Plans cancelled again. Tday cancelled because kids were sick. Ah well, it will be a celebration whenever we can get together.

Assuming they would return the middle of January, that sounds premature to me. At least wait until the beginning of the year to make the decision.

I'm not really sure what it means. Could mean they will require all students to get COVID tested before coming to campus. It's hard to even guess what will happen in 2 weeks.

Thanks everyone for your repsonses.
I thought my Covid test was scheduled for today so I showed up at the center only to find out it’s tomorrow. They were unable to do my test because “it won’t process until tomorrow since you have an appointment already.” They refused to just let me do the test. They gave me a card to call the State to see if I could book an appointment for today. while there a couple walked in behind me with no appointment and based on how long it took them to come out I’m assuming they got tested. Not happy about thatt.

my dd23 was able to find some rapid tests at a local CVS tonight. We both tested negative, but I have the following symptoms:
1. chest tightness (began tonight)
2. Head pain
3. sore throat
4. dray cough
5. body aches
6.nausea
7. chills.

I’ll be back at the test site first thing in the morning.

Sounds like the flu. There are lots of viruses besides Covid, but currently everyone goes there. I've heard of RSV, flu, plain old viruses, pneumonia and colds spreading like crazy.

Scratchy throat is a key symptom of the Omicron variant vs other variants. Not saying it indicates it IS COVID but that that it is a distinguishing symptom.

One of our son's friends tested positive for Covid today with just a scratchy throat. He saw her Thursday. Hope it was before she was exposed.

Our dil had fully vaxxed for covid and the flu had the flu last week. (Her brother had stayed with them and came down with the flu.) She had all the classic flu symptoms and felt crummy for a few days. Our son(also fully vaxxed for both) did not get the flu.

It's all going around.
