Covid question (sorry)

I received my second dose last January and had a break through case of Delta in July. It happens, and I was being cautious who I was unmasked around.

we’ve received our Booster and DH had to get tested this week. Thankfully negative. YetI received an email yesterday that a coworker tested positive. Breakthrough case, is fully vax.
I’d look around to find a test.

Scratchy throat is a key symptom of the Omicron variant vs other variants. Not saying it indicates it IS COVID but that that it is a distinguishing symptom.

My dd had a scratchy throat that hadn't gotten better for a couple days. Her first thought was strep since she's been prone to that since she was a kid.
Took a COVID test to rule it out and turned out she was positive. Now her boyfriend has a scratchy throat, think he gets his results today.

We all got tested yesterday because everyone in my household, including our two-year-old, is sick with *very* Covid-like symptoms. Turns out that we all have RSV, very likely the two-year-old got it first and then spread it around to the rest of us.Talking to my doctor on the phone yesterday, he said that RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is very prevalent this year, and that it's usually kids who get it and that it can be very serious or very mild. So far everyone is only ill like a moderate head cold, but we're keeping a watchful eye on DJ because lots of kids wind up in the hospital from this.

This will probably end up cancelling the Christmas Eve party, which makes me happy.

For everyone on this thread who is dealing with Covid, please take care of yourselves and I hope you're better soon. Sending my good vibes to you all.
My daughter was hospitalized at 6 months old for a week because of RSV. She was very sick even after she came home I was home with her for another three weeks until we were in the clear. She was premature but didn’t qualify for the RSV “vaccine” (its not really a vaccine but a treatment some babies can get as a monthly injection to fight off the virus).

i am so glad she is okay

Got sneezy, sore throat on Sat. I haven't had a cold in over 2 years, so found a home test at Walgreens. I was negative. I called my Dr.'s office, and they said it would be quicker to get a home test. Feel fine now.

Thanks everyone for your repsonses.
I thought my Covid test was scheduled for today so I showed up at the center only to find out it’s tomorrow. They were unable to do my test because “it won’t process until tomorrow since you have an appointment already.” They refused to just let me do the test. They gave me a card to call the State to see if I could book an appointment for today. while there a couple walked in behind me with no appointment and based on how long it took them to come out I’m assuming they got tested. Not happy about thatt.

my dd23 was able to find some rapid tests at a local CVS tonight. We both tested negative, but I have the following symptoms:
1. chest tightness (began tonight)
2. Head pain
3. sore throat
4. dray cough
5. body aches
6.nausea
7. chills.

I’ll be back at the test site first thing in the morning.

Ugh. Good luck today. 🤞🏻 Hope you are feeling better soon, no matter what it is.

With a lot of folks opting for the home covid tests, won't that skew the numbers? Every day we hear the daily covid numbers of people who tested positive, but with the home tests they don't get reported or recorded. Wont that kind of make the numbers invalid?

My DD’s friend had a sore throat Monday, assumed she got the flu from Dd (which started with a sore throat). Nope, Covid, her mom got it too. Both boosted (and my Dd had the flu shot).

Short answer: The positive test numbers have always been only an indication, the amount of unreported or asymptomatic infections is going to be through the roof by comparison...this late in the game I don't think anyone is too concerned with positive tests but rather hospitalizations

Assuming they would return the middle of January, that sounds premature to me. At least wait until the beginning of the year to make the decision.

They've got to think about students who travel, tho. We're hearing rumors that DD's uni is going to make an announcement this week about returning to virtual learning. We're hoping it will only be a walking back of the plan to resume 100% in person and not another total campus closure, but since students start returning the first week of Jan. for the short-term winter session and mid-Jan. for spring term, I'm sure they're thinking in terms of students' travel and housing plans in addition to class formats.

We've just had an outbreak at work. Five people have it after a short exposure to someone mid week last week who was asymptomatic at work but showed symptoms the next day. The rapidity and circumstances for which it spread highly signal Omicron to me. All have what they describe as "very bad colds." Two of the people who have it also had COVID earlier in the year so this is a reinfection for them. All were vaccinated as it's mandated in my workplace but I don't think any of them had been boosted yet. I wasn't in the office, but I just feel like I'm doomed with this variant.

As I said... "assuming they would return MID January". Making a decision four weeks before the return of school is premature IMO. If students are returning the first week of January, we're only two weeks out (less than) and I can understand that decision. A lot can change in a couple of weeks.

I think they are trying to get ahead of things. I'd be wondering just how long they want them to not return to campus because I think there's a line between being too ahead of things but my guess is they saw the writing on the wall with respects to spread as the explosion of Omicron is astounding (and just a few weeks ago my husband was saying countries were overreacting by banning travel because omicron wasn't really a thing and in just a few weeks it's the dominant strain when I saw multiple comments from the medical community thought Delta would continue being so for quite a while longer) and with Christmas and NYE get togethers a few weeks afterwards would still be impactful for students with respects to spread.

I get that it's more students and the colleges are stuck between a rock and a hard place. I don't think it's fair either to go back and forth back and forth like what happened last year for either the students or the professors here.

Also your comment about a lot can change in a few weeks is way too eerily similar to my wording back in March 2020 when I naively thought (not calling you naïve) our Vegas April 2020 trip would go on because a few weeks can change things. Obviously I was completely and utterly 100% wrong.

As rapidly as things are changing, things can be VERY different in four weeks. Sending an email now saying something to the effect of "We're watching what's happening with the spread locally and nationally. While we are considering different options when classes are scheduled to resume, we will not be making final decision until the first week of January. We will of course keep you updated on any changes. Enjoy your holidays!" is all that's needed. Of course, if they want to require vaccinations (if they haven't already) for folks on campus, then yes, that word needs to go out earlier.

I'm not saying they should be in person no matter what, and I'm not saying they should go virtual no matter what.

I'm hoping and thinking Omicron, although spreading rapidly, is not the danger that Delta and previous variants were, especially among the vaccinated.

Does your work track this? Your comment prompted me to even think about it, it's become commonplace for workplaces to track vaccination but I'm not sure if it's been thought about as much about boosters. I'm pretty sure my husband's company hasn't asked for that information.

Good to know! We did not realize that but it makes sense his home tests were both positive. PCR test results should come back by Friday but now assuming they will just confirm the positive.

There are very few false positive results with rapid tests. You can be certain the PCR will come back positive.

Not surprising. Strep=painful throat, not scratchy.

Scratchy throat can be cold, allergies, or covid (omicron specifically). It's unfortunate that scratchy throat is the hallmark omicron symptom because up until now, if you had a scratchy throat, it was reasonable to assume it was NOT covid, but just allergies or a cold.

I think that's the point and they are thinking things can very much change for the worst in the few weeks and that has been the pattern overall throughout this pandemic when it comes to cases and entities making decisions like this, they tend to make them when it's looking like things are on the rise.

A poorly matched flu vaccine, other stuff going around (colds, flu, RSV, strep, other viruses) and covid with Delta and now Omicron. I'm not saying I would 100% support all colleges doing this but I don't think it's too early when you look at how it's all unfolding. To alert the first week of January would be too late realistically because people could have been infected late. Colleges are in the unique category as they take students from all over so I think they have to think a bit differently.

I don't know about the PP's situation as far as size of their college, vaccine requirement, mask requirement, etc but I think the timing is more the issue because it's Christmas, then really shortly after NYE. Many colleges do go back the middle of January but with the infections and spread that's likely not enough time as a whole. Some people may recover but they may have spread it to someone else. Or in someone's household they got it later on. If school started back up first part of February yeah making a decision just after the middle of December would IMO be thinking too far in advance.

Neither one of us are wrong at all in our viewpoints but I do see the position the college is in where to me it's not as outlandish to make these decisions. If they made them not be on campus til Spring Break...yeah that's a bit much.

For the most part, yes, they track it, although it has not been mandatory to submit paperwork for boosters at this point. The people involved in this break out of cases were all pretty open about what and when they had everything done as far as vaccines.
