What parts are you from? The quarantine for Covid is longer than for other illnesses, I caught Covid from a friend and knew to test because she told me she tested positive. I hope you stayed in past day 5.I was ill last week with a fever and felt like I'd been run over by a truck. I went into my doc's office because I thought I might have an ear infection as my ear was throbbing. My doctor didn't feel the need to test for covid. He asked if I needed it for my work which I do not and I said I was planning to stay in bed and away from people anyway. His logic was that since covid doesn't have any treatment and I was going to stay home and sleep, what difference would the test make. Lots of regular viruses going around these parts. Felt better on about day 5.
I’ve had several friends treated with this, plus a steroid regiment. It does have treatment. Many of my friends have taken the monoclonal antibodies and got well quickly after.
I would assume folks who need flights to get back to a school in mid January have already purchased those flights. So saying now that they don't need to return causes "wasted" plane tickets. Waiting a week or two really doesn't change much for planning. But when returning to campus involves buying plane tickets and, for international students, crossing borders, it is worth planning ahead. DD's university has already dealt with a lot of upset students and parents over last-minute airfares home halfway through the spring 2020 semester and mad scrambles for housing for students who couldn't stay at home to study for the entire 20-21 school year (in the most expensive city in America where there's a more or less permanent housing shortage). More last-minute decisions are not going to go over well, whether it is wasted plane tickets purchased to get back to a campus that won't be open or last-minute fares to get back home if things close up mid-stream again or any of the variations of in-between weirdness (paying rent in that expensive city to take classes at their home computer or scrambling to figure out meals with drastic campus dining restrictions or whatever). I'd rather see them making the decisions early and giving families time to accommodate whatever new restrictions are imposed than taking a wait-and-see approach that leaves people scrambling at the last minute.
Also, a lot can change in a couple of weeks but if experience has taught us anything, it is that the positive changes with this pandemic are slow while the negative ones come at warp speed.
Why would Omicron act differently in the US than it has in SA? It's the same virus and we're all human beings. I've seen several Dr's talk about it and they expect it to do the same thing here. What we currently also have is the tail end of Deltain the US so there is some overlap. Also, several Dr's have stated that Omicron may be what we need to reach herd immunity since it does spread so quickly. Combined with those vaccinated and boosted and those that have already had it, it may be enough to make it endemic, just like the flu and common cold. When viruses start changing to more contagious and less deadly is always a good sign and it will become a virus we have to live with like the flu. We've only been tested twice and that was for our b2b cruise we got off off on 12 Dec. Things will be very different in a few weeks and the knee jerk reactions I'm seeing by people for weeks from now are premature.I read an article today that said as fast as Omicron took hold in Africa it’s subsiding just as fast. They described it as shooting up a mountain and shooting back down the other side. Granted the dynamic here in the States is vastly different but we can only hope this wave does not last as long as others have. The thought is it was here before we even knew about it. My kids are in High School so for us it’s no big deal if the decision is sort of last minute but I can see for younger kids and college kids a heads up could be helpful.
My DD had a sore throat and sinus congestion a couple months ago. I was 98% sure it was just a cold. Tested her at home at the onset and three days later just to make all of us feel better. Negative both times. Now, I’d be more concerned.
Steroid regimen was for those with lung involvement. That is not a symptom of Omicron. Also, most people with Omicron are only sick for a couple of days.I’ve had several friends treated with this, plus a steroid regiment.
Because there was way less people to infect in Africa and a good portion of them had already had the virus. Some think it simply ran out of people to infect. That’s certainly not the case here in the States and I won’t elaborate more than that because it definitely crosses the DIS guidelines. Some experts think it will be just like that where others are raising the alarm. I personally am somewhere in the middle. I think we’re heading toward endemic sooner than some think but I’m also a “don’t count you chickens before they hatch” kind of person. Why would Omicron act differently in the US than it has in SA? I can't immediately find it but I was reading about this very question. Why would Omicron act differently in the US than it has in SA? It's the same virus and we're all human beings. There are very few false positive results with rapid tests. You can be certain the PCR will come back positive.

There are treatments.
But this was only ok if you quarantined for the full 10 days. If you felt better on day 5 and resumed life, it was irresponsible of both you and your doctor.
Quarantining for 10 days is not an OPINION it is protocol for COVID. Since you doctor didn't test because you weren't sick enough to need treatment that doesn't change the fact that you should have quarantined/isolated for the full 10 days "just in case." Not doing so is one of the reasons that COVID continues to spread. One of the reason a COIVD test is done is to rule it out, so you can get back to your life without the need to quarantine for 10 days. Thanks for your unsolicited opinion. Since my doc actually has a medical degree and didn't appoint himself a doctor on the Dis, I will follow his advice. As I said, I didn't have the typical COVID symptoms, like no lung/breathing issues, taste and smell were all intact. I thought I might have the flu with all my body aches but doctor didn't test for that either. All everyone ever talks about is COVID, but there are still other illnesses and sicknesses out there. If every sniffle led to quarantining for 10 days, no one would ever go to work.

Omicron has different symptoms. Lung/breathing issues and smell/taste loss are not symptoms of Omicron. Omicron has more cold like symptoms-runny nose, sneezing, fever. There is a UK medical professional named Dr John Campbell who does daily YT videos about Covid. He basically states the facts being reported out about Omicron. The 23 Dec one talks about symptoms in one portion. He shows real numbers and talks about other countries, including SA.Thanks for your unsolicited opinion. I feel like I’ve missed something. Not sure what the issue is, if the PP didn't want their response to stick around I figured it would be respectful if I caught it early to also delete mine such that their quote wasn't still on this thread (which is what prompted me to delete my response as it contained their quote). It's Christmas eve y'all![]()

Probably (just due to the other conversation not going on anymore) but don't worry 'bout itI feel like I’ve missed something.
