as most have said, cheaper than direct, more to spend on holiday over there than on getting there.
If there are weather problems and MCO or Sanford shut. You have the option of flying to the hub airport and making a different connection(happened to us when Charley hit, we ended up flying to Miami rather than Tampa,as Tampa and MCO were closed added 2 hours instead of 3 days)You have to remember that the yanks use the plane like a bus,so there is never a problem shifting you around.never be afraid to walk up to a desk to see if you can get a different internal flight
International flight shorter
better customs at the hubs

regarding your comment about walking up to another plane - i saw that in action a year and a half ago...
i was in houston....
i had been with my mom at the medical center there and we had to fly back to detroit...
i was standing in line at the desk at the gate to find out how much longer our delay would be (there was a hurricane raging around us at the time)...
a couple in front of me asked if there was room on our plane...
they said they were scheduled on the plane at the gate across from ours, but their pilot was refusing to fly in the hurricane, while our pilot had decided to fly despite the hurricane

there was room on our plane, so the ground agent switched them to our plane..
which of course, led to my question when i got up to the agent...
what's up with the other pilot not flying and ours flying?
the ground agent said that as long as the airport is open, the pilots can make their own decision as to whether it's too dangerous to fly...
but the answer was more obvious than that....the other plane was a delta plane....that pilot is paid whether he flies or not...
our plane was a delta regional plane - that regional company pays the pilot only if he flies.....so.....you figure it out.....he's obviously more likely to fly in dangerous weather than the delta pilot...
nice to hear right before i got on board a very small jet taking off in the most frightful weather i've ever taken off into

another reason i hate flying regional airlines...whether they have a big airline's name in front of their name or not..
