They are so invested in conspiracy theories, I was able to convince them Slenderman was real back when he was still only a "creepypasta" - this backfired a few years later when those girls murdered their classmate supposedly in the name of Slenderman, because that just made this person go around telling people they already knew the truth about Slenderman because I told them about him. Oofgh.

Whatever the story. I didn't really follow it. I just recall being made to look like a ******* because I jokingly convinced someone he was a real thing being covered up by the government, and then a few years later some kids made him a widely-known thing. In hindsight, I would not have done it had I known it would actually become something people widely knew about and that would be implicated in a real-life gruesome event. Quickly took the "joke" out of it.

Oh what about that Malaysian air flight ... was it 370 ... that disappeared. Lots of conspiracies around that. I'm still not sure if they really know what happened. I was pretty interested in that story as it was unfolding.

And the one that took off from JFK in ~96 headed to Paris ... TWA 800 maybe? There was speculation that was brought down by a US fired missile. I'm not sure if that was ever definitively resolved either.

Oh and what really happened to Epstein. That is one that I do believe has some merit.

I posted at the beginning about not believing extreme conspiracies, then the last couple posts about planes got me thinking. I guess I do kind of believe in one (or two). The plane that went down in southwest PA on 9/11. I don't 100% believe consperacies, but I do kind of have doubts about the official story. I mean I highly doubt they would come out and say they shot down a plane full of passengers, even if it was to save thousands.

But they have recordings and such that makes me believe they are telling the truth, but those could be fabricated. I think that the one thing that makes me give conspiracies merit more than anything is where it went down. Just right in the middle of no where. I mean, it really couldn't have gone down in a better spot. But on the other hand, sometimes luck is involved in life.

That and JFK lol.

I'm not dead set on the conspiracies stance. Just wouldn't be shocked at all if it ever came out that there were more to both stories.

I can see how someone might fall into some of these. As mentioned in the thread our government/police has a well-documented history of pulling stunts and coverups. Anytime you put something behind a curtain people are gonna guess at what it is. We have whole game shows about it! My nephew used to be big on virus speculation, a slippery slope from his zombie movie binging. I sometimes wonder what his theories are on this pandemic but we haven't talked in a long while.

Then of course some people are more imaginative than others, small lies lead to big ones... and well, George Carlin said it best.

A PP had a good point. This friend is very unhappy, always looking at the dark side. It’s no surprise she is taken in by all this.

No, she’s wrong. The whole pandemic thing is being purposely mismanaged to either cancel the election or significantly suppress the turnout in blue areas of purple states.
It’s a lot bigger than a third rate burglary.

I think that there are things that happen that are part of bigger plans. Not aleins, or far ranging vast conspiracies but more politically motivated things. What I really believe is that because of social media, the internet, the extreme left and the extreme right we live in a world where your ideas can be nurtured and grown much more so now than they once could in the world. What I am trying to say is that whatever you believe in today's world there is a like minded group of people that exists in some corner of the internet that agrees with your beliefs. You can go there and lament with people like yourself and feed your belief structure. You don't have to confront other viewpoints or opinions and as a result your belief system is never questioned. Sure before the internet this happened but you had to leave your house and go find those people, now they are only a mouse click or two away at any time of the day or night.

I mean when we made our first trip to WDW in 1989 it was pre internet and the best you could do was a Birnbaum book that came out once a year for planning your trip. Now there are a thousand sites willing to offer you every secret you can wish for on the best way to plan your trip. I am not saying based on my age that the internet or social media is a bad thing, just that it has changed our lives and how we entertain ourselves, educate ourselves, and added a whole lot of conspiracy theroy's to the ones we had pre internet.
