Hi everyone,

My grandparents live in San Diego, so I've been out there a bunch of times to visit them, but most of those visits were before I was 14. I went once the summer before last with my parents, when I was 23. I'm looking to go out there this spring/summer (most likely the first or second week in June, depending on work schedules) to visit them and introduce my boyfriend to them.

The main point of this trip is to visit my grandparents, but I also want it to be a mini-break since it will be the only vacation I take (besides a long weekend for a wedding of a high school friend) until Feb 2010. I also want to make sure my boyfriend has fun, since I know it'll be intimidating to be visiting with people you've never met and staying in their house. In any case, the basic plan is to spend days doing stuff on our own (we'll have access to one of their cars, although I may decide to limit how much we use it so we don't inconvenience them) and then spend dinners and evenings at their condo on Coronado. I'd like to take two days and a night going a bit north to Anaheim to give my grandparents a break- it'll be good for us too I'm sure, to decompress from being "on" all the time if that makes sense.

Anyway, here's the tentative itinerary:

Sunday: Fly in, arrive at lunchtime. Head out to Cabrillo National Monument in the afternoon to check out the view, then evening at home w/ the grandparents catching up.

Monday:Tour the Aircraft Carrier Museum w/ my grandpa (he's a docent there and a retired Air Force Lt Colonel, and my boyfriend is a student pilot, so this is kind of a must-do). Either head to Old Town or take the trolley down to Tijuana for lunch and the afternoon. Back to the condo for dinner w/ the grandparents.

Tuesday:Get to La Jolla early to check out the Childrens Pool (how early would we need to get there to get a parking spot in town?) and take a kayak/snorkel tour. Grab lunch and head to the gliderport at Torrey Pines, and if feeling brave head down to Black's Beach. Back to the condo for dinner w/ the grandparents.

Wednesday: After a leisurely morning, drive up to Temecula to check out some wineries (believe it or not, my boyfriend's request- I've created a monster after making him come with me to Virginia wineries a couple times, lol). Continue on to Anaheim and check into our hotel (HoJo or Candy Cane Inn most likely- looking for a place to park the car for free and walk to park, and not to spend a lot). Possibly a nice dinner at Napa Rose or somewhere in DtD before an early-ish night.

Thursday: Disneyland- debating whether to just eat counter service all day, or make an early dinner reservation somewhere to get a break. Stay through fireworks (are they likely to be offered on a Thurs night in early June? What about Fantasmic?) and probably to park closing. Drive back to San Diego and crash!

Friday: Stick around Coronado, or maybe take a late morning Harbor Cruise. Check out Gaslamp if we feel like it, or just rent bikes at the ferry landing and go check out the Hotel Del and the beach next door. Take my grandparents to dinner to thank them for having us all week!

Either Friday night redeye or Saturday morning, head home.

Thoughts? There's a chance we'd add an extra day and if so, I'm not sure of the plans yet- maybe the zoo, wild animal park (the photo caravan is tempting!) or Sea World, but we may want to avoid the kid stuff a bit more. Maybe we'd give Tijuana it's own day (I've never been and am kind of indifferent, but my boyfriend wants to go to say he's been to Mexico) and then make a day of Old Town and Balboa park.

gaslamp is awesome!!! if you like bars and people then it's a great place and you can easily bar hop by walking.

yeah, I've heard great things about Gaslamp- I just wonder if it's worth the cab ride back to Coronado since driving back after barhopping wouldn't be the best idea. Plus I'd feel a little awkward being out all day, coming home for dinner, and being like "thanks for feeding me, now I'm leaving again," ya know?

I think I'll play it by ear- if we feel like going out one night, I know it's an option, but I probably won't "plan" on it if it makes sense.

There's a good chance we'd make it there during daylight just to walk around for a bit- and maybe get some ice cream at Ghiradellis!

might be an expensive cab ride.

on the other hand, there is coronado Brewery: http://www.coronadobrewingcompany.com/

and with a little drive to Escondido, i highly recommend having lunch at and touring the Stone Brewery. it's in a brand new gorgeous facility. i went there about a month ago and it was AMAZING.

sorry, i'm into craft beer and breweries.

there are some cool museums in Balboa Park. My fiancee and i were there in Feb. and saw a really cool Pompei exhibit at the natural history museum

Yeah, my parents said they liked the Coronado Brewery the last time they were down!

Sounds fun! There are tons of yummy places to eat in Old Town. Just FYI, you can easily walk to the DLR from the Hojos and the Candy Cane, that way you wouldn't have to pay to park at Disneyland. The Hojo is very close and you can get great deals at certain times of year with an entertainment book. Do a search on the Disneyland board for the Entertainment book deal and you can find out more about it if you don't know already.

Yeah, I was just noticing some threads about this- would it be worth it to buy an entertainment book solely for this discount? Price will probably make the determination between CCI and HoJo for us- the free breakfast at CCI would be nice, but looks like HoJo is right next to a McDonalds, so if the rate is more than $10 or so less, we might as well buy something quick and cheap!

Also, does anyone know if it would be possible to head down to Tijuana from downtown SD (after we're done with the Midway) at about noon, have lunch and wander around for a bit, and make it home in time for dinner on the trolley? I'm picturing the pedestrian-bridge Customs in Niagara Falls, which never seems to take long, but Old Town is a fine alternative if that's too big of a deal.

I would skip the Tijuana trip and visit Old Town, border towns are just not that great and there has been increased violence due to drug gangs. Old Town will be fun.

Also near to Disneyland is Carousel Inn, closer than both Hojo and Candy Cane Inn. We like it and plan on staying again next visit.

You may want to dine at Blue Bayou just for the fun of it!!!:goodvibes

I agree about Border towns- the only way we'd go is if it is important to my boyfriend.

Anyone have an idea of the parking situation in La Jolla besides "bad'? How early would we have to get there on a weekday to get a spot? How about weekends?
