Hi everyone,
My grandparents live in San Diego, so I've been out there a bunch of times to visit them, but most of those visits were before I was 14. I went once the summer before last with my parents, when I was 23. I'm looking to go out there this spring/summer (most likely the first or second week in June, depending on work schedules) to visit them and introduce my boyfriend to them.
The main point of this trip is to visit my grandparents, but I also want it to be a mini-break since it will be the only vacation I take (besides a long weekend for a wedding of a high school friend) until Feb 2010. I also want to make sure my boyfriend has fun, since I know it'll be intimidating to be visiting with people you've never met and staying in their house. In any case, the basic plan is to spend days doing stuff on our own (we'll have access to one of their cars, although I may decide to limit how much we use it so we don't inconvenience them) and then spend dinners and evenings at their condo on Coronado. I'd like to take two days and a night going a bit north to Anaheim to give my grandparents a break- it'll be good for us too I'm sure, to decompress from being "on" all the time if that makes sense.
Anyway, here's the tentative itinerary:
Sunday: Fly in, arrive at lunchtime. Head out to Cabrillo National Monument in the afternoon to check out the view, then evening at home w/ the grandparents catching up.
Monday:Tour the Aircraft Carrier Museum w/ my grandpa (he's a docent there and a retired Air Force Lt Colonel, and my boyfriend is a student pilot, so this is kind of a must-do). Either head to Old Town or take the trolley down to Tijuana for lunch and the afternoon. Back to the condo for dinner w/ the grandparents.
Tuesday:Get to La Jolla early to check out the Childrens Pool (how early would we need to get there to get a parking spot in town?) and take a kayak/snorkel tour. Grab lunch and head to the gliderport at Torrey Pines, and if feeling brave head down to Black's Beach. Back to the condo for dinner w/ the grandparents.
Wednesday: After a leisurely morning, drive up to Temecula to check out some wineries (believe it or not, my boyfriend's request- I've created a monster after making him come with me to Virginia wineries a couple times, lol). Continue on to Anaheim and check into our hotel (HoJo or Candy Cane Inn most likely- looking for a place to park the car for free and walk to park, and not to spend a lot). Possibly a nice dinner at Napa Rose or somewhere in DtD before an early-ish night.
Thursday: Disneyland- debating whether to just eat counter service all day, or make an early dinner reservation somewhere to get a break. Stay through fireworks (are they likely to be offered on a Thurs night in early June? What about Fantasmic?) and probably to park closing. Drive back to San Diego and crash!
Friday: Stick around Coronado, or maybe take a late morning Harbor Cruise. Check out Gaslamp if we feel like it, or just rent bikes at the ferry landing and go check out the Hotel Del and the beach next door. Take my grandparents to dinner to thank them for having us all week!
Either Friday night redeye or Saturday morning, head home.
Thoughts? There's a chance we'd add an extra day and if so, I'm not sure of the plans yet- maybe the zoo, wild animal park (the photo caravan is tempting!) or Sea World, but we may want to avoid the kid stuff a bit more. Maybe we'd give Tijuana it's own day (I've never been and am kind of indifferent, but my boyfriend wants to go to say he's been to Mexico) and then make a day of Old Town and Balboa park.
