Coming from NY. This is horrible

Has anyone known someone who completely changed their plans based on these quarantines? Clearly 28 days (or even just the 7 days if your state has that part about negative test result) is not feasible plus any time you spend for vacation which I know is the point.

But I agree, we can move on.
But where to? I just read an article about a Dutch woman with a US fiance, she can't go to him, he can't go to her. He can go to Mexico, but she can't go there... Luckily Aruba allows both US and Dutch citizens. As I understood it, they are going to isolate in a private home for 2 weeks and then each flies home again. And then isolate here.

Not sure why you quoted me. I was specifically talking to one poster about stopping the off topic conversation we were having. It had nothing to do with moving on from the virus.

Again, unless you live in New York, you have no idea what 9/11 was about.
I live in Manhattan. My family lived through 9/11, my husband worked very close to the Towers. He couldn't avoid seeing people jumping as he walked home, but that doesn't mean that our experience is any more or less tragic than others' experiences, either in NYC, in the USA, or around the world.

Fun fact: I mentioned above that we've been planning to get married in New Orleans in November - we just got back from a short trip down there on Saturday for wedding-related errands (the kind you can't do remotely) and on our flight home they gave us a NYS Health questionnaire to fill out. Dropped them in a box at the security checkpoint on the way out. It's only been 2 days so no one's called us or checked in but we're fully prepped to spend all 14 days inside our apartment. Knowing we had to quarantine when we got back before we left gave us time to prepare and stock up on groceries, paper goods, etc. We're both lucky that we can WFH (in fact neither of our offices are opening until after Labor Day at least) and I know not everyone has that option. So, it didn't change our travel plans, we just had to prepare for it.

Wow, that is dedication.

We are not out of the woods in New York New Jersey area. This is like war. Covid is going to hit us hard again. We can celebrate for a little bit but the enemy will be back maybe stronger than ever. If we haven’t learned from our mistakes. Don’t let your guard down keep on social distancing and wear your masks. We lost a lot of good people. The battle might be over but the war is not over.
I agree. If we believe the scientists, we will likely get a second wave.

Yes, unfortunately, I agree. We aren't over this yet. Not by a long shot. I hope we can keep it DOWN. But, there's too many people traveling into NY to fully stop it. That is not to say people deliberately bring the virus with them. The nature of COVID is that we don't know we have it, until we know. Some people could catch it on the flight coming in, and after several days start being infectious. :headache:

Gov. Cuomo himself said today in his news briefing: "I never said we are out of trouble. I said our numbers are down." He said he's constantly worried about this situation going out of control again. That he's not normally a worrier. It's situational. And THIS situation worries him. He said we can't be lax or become complacent, and put down our guard. Thus the newly expanded rule for people entering NY, that they MUST immediately give their contact address, so they can be traced.

I'm in NYS but not near NYC. I'm worried that people around here are becoming too ready to drop all restrictions and jump back to "normal" life and that we'll start seeing a turn around again.
This makes me really sad for you guys. I would really hope your state would learn from the rest of us how dangerous complacency is.

I have family in the Thousand Islands region and from the beginning they didn't want to take it seriously because it didn't directly impact them. They didn't think it was "fair" that they had to shelter in place and complained the entire time. I worry too that they are too complacent because they haven't been impacted (yet) just like a lot of other places, and won't take precautions until it's too late. But hopefully they are starting to see that things can go downhill very quickly, unexpectedly, and start taking mask-wearing and distancing more seriously. I hate to say it because I don't wish it to be true but it kind of seems like it's not a matter of if coronavirus is going to infiltrate your community, but when.

Yes, people have completely changed vacation plans due to quarantines. Not NY/FL specifically, but I already mentioned that my family has changed our usual summer plans because we would have to quarantine both before and after. I know several other friends and relatives who have changed plans and are sticking in-state for the summer as well.

Me, too! I'm hoping that it's a vocal minority instead of the majority that it appears. I don't think it's the whole state, just the area that I'm in.

NYC has hit a milestone this weekend! We've had NO COVID deaths for the first time in 4 months. :jumping1: :dance3: :woohoo: :cool1: :cheer2:

The state has been hovering down around 5-7 deaths per day for a while now. Of course, zero deaths won't last, as long as COVID is around. Yet, it's nice to finally hit this day once.
I don’t want to sound like a party pooper as NY has really reduced their trend down with the virus. But, the 7-day moving average of daily new deaths was 10. To go from a week of that to 0 seems unlikely. A gap in reports seems more plausible.

And its important not to forget that deaths are a lagging metric of cases and of the reports themselves.
I unfortunately agree. And we should be clear that NYC had zero deaths. NY had 10 yesterday. I've been guilty of interchanging the two on the this thread. Either way, I'd still take it over the 480 something my state had yesterday.

Actually I was very clear that NYC had zero deaths. Not the whole state. (At least I thought I was clear. :upsidedow ) On some of our charts, the government likes to separate out the city from the rest of the state too, as NYC has a different set of factors that are different from the rest of the state.

We are well aware that deaths are a lagging indicator. Statewide, our infection rate is down to about 1.3%. We've had several days of days at only between 5-11 deaths. (I actually hadn't gone back as far as the 11 deaths.) Again, we had ZERO deaths on Saturday. WE NEW YORKERS are celebrating this milestone whether others agree or not.

That's an issue near me just with the Canadian border. There are couples/partners/families on both sides of the border, who have been separated for months. Some who live literally within walking distance but not allowed to cross. Though, now that I've said that, I think there has been something relaxed which allows them to reunite, but must then stay together in one country or the other - so if people have jobs that can be WFH, or elderly family members, they are still separated.

Not just personal relationships - emergency responders are impacted by the border closings as well. Volunteer fire companies who provide mutual aid have been impacted unable to cross.

Me. I had the coveted AP Preview Day, plus park passes and DVC reservations. I am sitting here on my couch in NY because of both the FL and NY quarantines, which would amount to 28 days of quarantine for a 5 day trip. I have also completely cancelled our July family trip because of the 2 week quarantine as well as an August trip (that was rescheduled from May...) because I can't quarantine for 2 weeks with the uncertainty of if/when/how school is going to start. I have many friends who have cancelled trips to OBX, Delaware, FL, etc because of the quarantine. Many, many people have cancelled trips this summer because of the NY quarantine - I'm not sure if you're doubting that with your question or just curious...

This is good! I just read they were able to tie an outbreak to travelers from Georgia, I think. I may have the state wrong.

NY is also seeing a surge in cases in their 20 yr old demographic, per CNN. I really hope for NY, nobody is getting complacent!

ETA: It is NYers who traveled to GA. Not people from GA.

Thanks for caring. :) The NY Gov. was on Skype with Mayor Keisha Bottoms of Atlanta today. He asked her if she needed any assistance and offered her NY's testing and Contact Tracing program. (Every state has had to come up with their own Contact Tracing, if they have one. As there is no nationwide Pandemic Response Dept to create one for the U.S.)

We were really fortunate in that billionaire, (and former Mayor of NYC,) Michael Bloomberg, donated the funding and created the Contact Tracing program and software NYS uses, as well as spent 2 weeks training all the contract tracers. Every region had to have a specific number of contact tracers ready, according to population of each region, even before any region started Phase 1.

The Contact Tracers were able to tamp down this fire from those returning from GA, as well as a COVID party some college kids had. They nailed 9 of them. Some of them went to 2 COVID parties and were planning on attending a third on July 4th weekend. :badpc: When the college kids weren't going to speak up and name the other people at the parties to the contact tracers, county officials slapped 8 of them with subpoenas to talk. For every day they don't talk, they would be fined $2000. They gave up the other people. :thumbsup2 We were so lucky with that one. This was literally 30 miles from where the first guy was, who started it all back in March. I am beyond livid at those college kids. :furious:

Mayor Bottoms eagerly accepted the offer to get the ability to do quicker COVID testing than they currently have and our Contact Tracing program. Our Gov. is sending people to get that software program up & running with her people, to train the contact tracers, and get faster testing in place.

NY Gov had previously offered our Contact Tracing program and people to install & train the tracers to all states. I don't know who else has accepted.

BTW, did you know when were were at the height of the apex, back in April, and were in desperate need of ventilators, that Gov. Newsom loaned NY 500 state-owned ventilators, even though some counties in CA gave him some flack for it, saying they were low on ventilators and why was he sending them away? He said you guys were fine for the moment, while we needed it. By the time you needed them, we'd be over the worst and able to send them back. :grouphug:

As a NYer, I thank you guys in CA for that. :flower3:
