Of course pins come in many shapes/sizes, but they can also get quite heavy when worn around the neck.
Basic guesses/opinions as to how many average sized pins are a comfortable weight to wear for a child under 9??

Hello!

First, in response to your original question, I'd say 6-8? Not more than that.

Second, keep in mind that those pin backs are not the most reliable.. we only kept traders on our lanyards because the kids had lost one/two in the past. (I can't say for sure if they fell off or were just lost w/kids fooling around with them.)

I think if you keep favorites back at hotel or wherever, it will limit the temptation to trade some of those as well, my kids often got caught up in heat of moment!

Happy trading!!

My kids do 6-8 on a lanyard. More as a precaution against losing them than the weight. They don't get that heavy.

I cram those lanyards full!!!! I've been trading since I was six, and then a full lanyard was a little heavy, and uncomfortable by the end of the day. I usually just take it off, put it in the park bag we had, and take it out when I wanted to trade. Last time, I had two lanyards, crammed full, and couldn't stand it. It felt like it was dragging my neck down. At the end of that trip, I got a Pin Book. :rotfl:

My DD loves to trade and loads her lanyard up, but we keep it in the backpack in a ziploc bag and just take it out when she sees something she wants to trade for. Having had a few pins fall off in the past, we found this to be easier. Plus it is heavy and irritates the back of her neck in the heat.

My dd can do up to 10 pins on her lanyard. Please look into buying your child some locking pin backs. Here is a link so you can see what they look like:

They sell them in the same areas at the parks where they sell the pins. The little plastic black mickey head pin backs that come with the pins do come off sometimes. These locking pin backs solve your problem!

Great advice and tips, I appreciate it!
And I'll definitely look into the locking pin backs.

My oldest had a ton of pins on his lanyard years ago when he was about 6 1/2, but I can't remember if he complained they were heavy. Maybe I carried it in the backpack....

Middle DS has a few from Disney Paris but not enough that it weighed him down when we were there.
I skipped the pins last time but this time I thought they'd enjoy having a few.

The $8 for locking pin backs is a wise investment. Yes, you have to take the key with you & unlock the back for every trade, but the pins won't come off. We've lost (and found!) many pins that the rubber backs came off of. My DSs each carry about 6-10 pins on their lanyards while in the parks.
