College parents...fall semester?

if you kiddos are going off to their college/college town you might want to check on the status of the buisnesses/services they relied on in the past there (or plan on relying on for their first year) b/c things may not be as they remember...

Thanks for the tips. I appreciate it!

University of Texas, just down the road from me, has the most cases of any college in the country. Nice.

I'm beginning to dread mid-September, when colleges and schools here have been in session for 3-4 weeks. I suspect we're going to see a huge surge.

Dds' college will offer almost every class virtual. One dd has said she plans on doing all of hers that way until she sees how the numbers look. The other two are art majors and have studio classes, so can't easily stay isolated.

I am having my 3 college kids go to the functional medicine doctor this week for blood work to check for nutrient deficiencies as part of their back to college plan. LOL.

2 have had health concerns already. The 3rd has never had any health concerns. It will be his first full blood workup.

Want to boost their vitamins with what they may be deficient in. One has his results and he is low in b12 and vitamin d. He is nocturnal, very fair skinned and hates the sun.

They all happen to be home this week and I am handing quality vitamins out to them with their dinner. Lol

Making our lists for items to get them for back to school and including new thermometers, Emergen C and Cold Eeze zinc lozenges and some powerades for electrolytes with the usual back to college stuff.

Most of their classes will be virtual or hybrid. Daughter has a lab that she'll need to go to in person one day. She'll be in a dorm room. One son (apartment) has to go on campus for several different things on Tuesdays. The other (my pale nocturnal one, lives in an apartment) has most classes online, but he will have times that he has to be in person in the local hospital for different lessons and experiences. Several of his friends live in the same building and they are discussing studying together. Fortunately, my kids are being cautious this summer.

MIL was diagnosed yesterday in her town. She went to a work meeting last Wednesday, sat next to her boss, signed some paperwork together. Boss tested positive on Saturday. MIL positive yesterday. We were so careful bringing our college kids to visit her over July 4th and threatened them that they could not bring Covid to grandma. When we got the news she had it yesterday, DH and I first thought oh no did the kids bring it to her. But it has been over three weeks and she knows she caught it from her boss. Seems it's running through the boss's family-in laws have it, etc.

I pray that your MIL only has a mild case. It is so frustrating that you all tried so hard to protect her and she caught it anyway. I’m so sorry.

So sorry to hear. Sending prayers that it will be a mild case and she will recover quickly!

How is move in going for those going back to campus? We moved our daughter in last week and it actually went really well with all the corona modifications in place. Sorority recruitment is going on now and campus is buzzing with activity . No spike in numbers yet .

DS doesn’t move in until the 24th, but his school did a Webinar last night on their plans, and it was very reassuring.

UMass did an about face last week and said that the dorms and campus would not be open! The dorms and campus are only open for a very small minority who have an in person class. This was after they had put together a comprehensive plan and students had move in dates. Their timing was absurd!
The chancellor even went so far as to encourage those with off campus apartments to not come. Well, those leases are already signed so you can imagine how that went over.
My own DS is a senior and he had already moved into his off campus apartment where he will be staying.
The irony is, due to the restrictions that were initially announced, hundreds of more students than usual got off campus apartments. Now that the campus is closed, they will be spending all their time in the local communities instead of on campus where it would a more controlled environment.
Anyway, I will be hoping and praying that colleges everywhere are successful. I would love a glimmer of hope that DS could actually have a little bit of a final semester this spring.

That’s absolutely insane! My son moved in Tuesday. Everything was fine. We were back on campus yesterday to deal with an issue and all the kids were wearing masks. I think it will be fine. He goes back to stay tomorrow

University of Delaware initially closed dorm to everyone except for those who needed to be there (face to face small labs, athletes, international students...). My daughter will be in her townhouse because we signed a lease in october. I think there were as many students looking to give up leases as there was those who wanted to take over leases, so off campus housing is full as usual. Now that some have declined housing, UD is letting others appeal for housing (they are just opening suite style dorms with less occupants). Parents are freaking out finding out that freshmen are appealing and staying on campus while their upperclassmen will be home (even though anyone could appeal).

The crazy thing is, they had spent so much time working out and communicating their plan. They had given all students the option of a virtual semester at home. More than 40% of the students who typically live on campus made other arrangements to either stay home or get an apartment. It seemed like the best way to start. I really feel for the freshmen who had their plans ripped out from under them at the last minute!

I hope your son has a great year!

Ugh! That sounds like a similar mess! We signed the lease back in early February.

Best wishes to your daughter!

My kid goes back Monday off Campus and her classes start 8/25/20. She "passed"her covid test and right at her campus is 99% are negative before getting to campus.

Sorry to hear that. UMass Boston was one of the schools DD was going to apply to, but she loved UCF on our visit and never did apply.

Delaware was one of my son's top considerations. We were really pushing him toward Delaware because even though OOS and the most expensive option, it is only an hour from us and he was accepted into the honors program. He didn't choose UofD or UMD because he wanted to go south and wanted SEC football. He was more happy with his choice when he heard that both of those schools were limiting on campus living. At any rate, UofD is sending us emails now, repeatedly, about some Gap Year program for freshman. He moves into his dorm on Monday at UofSC, classes start 8/20. He has a mix of online and F2F classes. He is excited, but also nervous, about going. The school seems to be doing a decent job of trying to mitigate Covid transmission but we shall see!

DD moves in next Saturday (8/22) and classes start at UCF on 8/24. UCF is doing staggered dorm move-ins with a covid-test required as the first step of the move-in process.

They just started moving in on 8/8 for frat/sorority stuff, RA's and marching band camp. Yesterday, they released the first batch of test results for tests done Saturday and Sunday -- 837 tests, 11 positive for 1.3% which is very low.

One of DD's roommates is in marching band and moved in on Monday. Don't have her test results yet, but we should get them today or tomorrow. She is very happy with the dorm apartment and the pictures look great.

We have three reports on move-ins and all 3 have been positive, including one Mom who has not been entirely pleased with two previous move-ins. The rooms are apparently very well cleaned and everything has been smooth so far.

My daughter is in the honors college and got enough of a scholarship to bring it down to in state. She loves it so much, Villanova was her first pick but no scholarship, she was happy we couldn’t afford it in the end. I’m glad she is in honors because all her friends are too, and it really is a big party school (and she is social).

My son moves back this coming week, classes start Aug 24. They have 70% back in dorms and are estimating about 50% of the overall student population to return to the area (Tallahassee). At this point he does not have anyone in the other bedroom of his on campus two bedroom apartment.

They test before move in and they built a testing facility on campus to get fast results.
I am ready for things to implode but hoping for the best.
