I'm glad they pushed back the digital conversion! I HATE my convertor box! We did get a CBS channel (that was it) with it, now we only get NBC, and this morning a PBS was coming in all digitized looking and I couldn't get it in for anything! I keep hoping Brian will put the antenna on the roof, that should get in more. With just our rabbit ears (no box) we get 3 channels quite nicely!
My grandpa hates his box too. We don't have the box, because we have satellite. His picture sometimes comes in all pixely and it drives him up the wall. You need to tell Brian to get your antenna on the top of your house, but tell him to be careful. My grandpa gets lots of channels with his roof top antenna.

Please Pray...my mom just called, my Granny just had a stroke...please just pray for her.

Said a prayer for her.

I'm not in anyway trying to cause an argument of any kind, but people need to actually read the law, not others interpretations of the law. You will be found in violation of the law if you sell an item that contains more than the legal limit of lead, which is 600mm. The only fabric that contains anything close to that amount of lead is fabric that is used on patio furniture. You should make sure that buttons, zippers and such are compliant, but do you really think that a button is going to contain that much lead in it. I really think that people are over reacting. It is ok to petition to have the law amended to exclude home businesses, however that will leave a gaping loop hole for over seas manufacturers. They are working on defining what is acceptable. If you are using products that carry the lead compliant certificate than you are all clear. You will have to show that the materials that you use are compliant by displaying and providing the original certificate from the original manufacturer. In the video that I posted earlier they stated that a certain yarn was tested and it was found that one of the dyes used contained lead, but even if the entire garment had been made of this specific colored yarn it would still be well under the legal limit. I'm trying to be helpful by putting out information directly from the law makers website not trying to argue.

This is very controversial in the boutique world. The law is very vague and most of us cannot afford a $100,000 fine for making a $75.00 outfit. Each component has to be tested. Just because I went to Joann's and bought fabric, I cannot use Joann's testing for my outfit. I have to test it again. The resellers are different than the OOAK makers. I am very worried what will happen on Feb 10. I do rely on the income that I get from the few things I make each month. I hate conflict, but I think you are simplifying this issue and it is not a simple issue. I have already seen articles about a library that will stop allowing children to use it because they cannot afford to have all the books tested. This law has far reaching implications that the law makers never even considered.

Sue

From my understanding, each component that goes into the making of say, an outfit needs to be tested. Testing cost over $100 for each component. (Don't know the actuall number) So if I were to list a stripwork jumper that used 8 different fabrics, each fabric would need to be tested for lead. Plus the thread, buttons and elastic used. Then each component needs to be tested AGAIN for Phthalates (sp). You do the math. ;) Then every size I make would need to be tested again (batch testing). Sounds doable! Even if this were a posibility (yeah right!) I can't imaging the companies doing the testing would have time to test my 1 garment.
.
Leslie, that's how I read it too. (yes, I read the actual law) This is the section that worries me, it is talking about the finished product:
third%20party%20testing.JPG

Although, I'm unclear from this if it would have to be each size?

I don't think anyone wants to argue about this. I completely agree with Crystal about reading the law yourself. It's never a good idea to rely on what other people tell you that it says. If how you understand it worries you, then make a fuss!

I agree with you. I had hoped that using fabrics that had already been tested and certified was going to put us in the clear but it doesn't look that way.

TJ - I had read somewhere that people were worried about thier inventory and that they couldn't even donate the items because under the law it would be illegal. While I don't think we would let it, techinaclly the Big Give would be effected. ETA - That's what I read about the component testing too. I'll try to find the part about batch testing each size.

Because these items that would have been donated - clothes, toys, books etc. now have nowhere to go they will end up in landfills. I don't know about that though since resale shos are suppose to be in the clear now, right? I do know that there was a news story here not too long ago that resale/consignment shops in the area were going to have to close, and Salvation Army etc. were no longer accpcting donations. I want to believe that this has been blown out of porportion, and we all are reading into it, but no one (in goverment) has come forward and said that. I've read the actual law, and articles, blog posts, community board posts. At first I believed that it wouldn't effect us - the fabric manufacturers would do the testing then we would be OK to use it. I hope this turns out to be the case.

BTW - I'm not arguing, I'm Discussing. ;)

My other point is this: How many of the home based businesses are complying with the laws that are in place now? and How many of them have been fined for not being compliant? I haven't seen anyone who sells children's sleepwear being compliant with the law that is already in effect and I haven't seen them get fined either.

I just have to say I feel we pay law makers way too much money to write laws that are not understandably in any way. How are earth are you supposed to inforce something when you can't get a clear interpretation of it?

Sorry this bothers me not just about this law, but most bills I have tried to read the actual bill.

I really hope they clear this bill up so it doesn't affect the people on this thread and the people I know in real life that sew and make handmade toys and clothes. When I was trying to read through all this stuff, I thought I read a clarification from the CPSI that this was for toys and not clothes except for things targeted for sleeping. Not that that makes things better in general, but . . .

On a side note, I hate ironing.

We use to have a roof top anetenna (on the roof and not in a box in the garage) and we got lots of channels. I'm hopeing the same thing will be the case when we get the new antenna on the roof with the box. We've had the antenna in the garage for awhile now **cough**8years*cough**Ahem..Sorry, had something stuck in my throat!!! :rotfl2:

He DID tell his Dad that he would get it up for me the other day though! So, I'm hopeful!

Yes, it's that pixelated thing that drives me bonkers! If we move the box just a 1/4" it screws up everything!

I was inspired to make Grace a dress from the Tinkerbell pillowcase from Kmart. I saw the outfits some of you made using them so I decided to try. I also bought a little mermaid pillowcase. I haven't done anything with that one yet. When I finished the tinkerbell top it was too short. I attached the bottom green piece with ric rac to add length.

mycreations002.jpg

This is sooooooo adorable! I would have never known the green hem was an add on- it looks perfect and I love your choice in lining too and buttons.

Im curious, will you be headed to WDW soon, or do your kids wear Disney anytime? I always wondered this about all the customs here.
here is the winter mickey/minnie i just finished for hannah..

Hope everyone's having a great weekend!!!!!
Oh Lori, you really made something amazing here- I love this pattern, too bad I seem too sick to finish mine. Yesterday I cut out the fabric for the ruffles. Thats it. so sad and you whipped yours up in a weekend.....:cheer2:

DisneyMommieof2- Prayers for your family! How nice of you to make the trip. As sad as funerals are, I know I always like seeing all my family I never see otherwise. I live 8+ hours from many of my relatives and my Grampy's funeral last year gave me a chance to see many of them. Bless you and have a safe drive.

I know, i really need to remember how to do thumbnails...
Here is my last Valentine's Day outfit for the year. I had ordered some pettis for spring/Easter, and they arrived earlier than expected. Also, since it looks as though I may not be able to use them after Feb 10 (thanks to the new legislation), I wanted to make something with them real quick. I have always loves the look of a petti with an embellished t-shirt.

The fluff is not as neon as it seems to be in the last pic, and I know better than to apologize for my dd's tangled hair. :D

I love this! Sooo cute.

me- Drs app, lots of meds, the whole family is sick. Ugh

I was told (by "teachers") that she is "not capable of independant or creative thought".

Well she is currently fluttering around my house dressed as Fawn (she dressed herself a tee and orange leggings and fawn colored tutu). She found a hair tie in her room that looks like the one Fawn wears and she asked for a ponytail like Fawn. Then she brought me the shimmer nights (Thank you TeresaJoy :grouphug: ) and asked me to spray it on her arms-because Fawn glitters (And she is right I went back and looked at the pictures from our Meet and greet and she does glitter!). She asked for "berries and fluff" for breakfast which she is eating sitting on a rock (footstool). It seems I am "Fairy Mary". She is just too cute! And I am so proud of all the progress she is making.

Hmmmph..... well, I'm not "expert," but this sounds like creative and independent behavior/thought to me.

Please Pray...my mom just called, my Granny just had a stroke...please just pray for her.

I will definitely add your Granny to my prayer list. Please keep us updated when you can.

Actually I painted it. I have no Idea how to applique.... Yet haha. Thank you for all the nice comments!

Wow!!! I wish I could paint. You did a great job!!!

Hey guys! I haven't been around but I have been thinking of all of you. I have NOT been sewing. Just busy busy busy learning to be a SAHM...boy are the dishes NEVER actually done? But finally I think I have decluttered my home to the extent that I may actually have time to sit down and sew something. I have tons of summery fabrics from last year that never got used and plan on making Little a whole slew of round necked dresses and pillowcase dresses for the FL. heat. It's just so nice to have something light and breezy to just throw on. I am also about to enter the world of cloth diapers....which I have been told is CRAZY. I am sewing dipes for the new little as well as a girlfriend who is due the day before me, so I'm sure to be a busy mama. I havent' gone backwards b/c I could never catch up but I
LOVE the outfit snubie made at the top of teresa's post. ADORABLE!!

I hope yo all have been well and look forward to seeing everyone who is going to the Feb. meet.

...t.

Sounds like it is crazy but fun. I cloth diapered my oldest. In fact, I became so addicted to the beautiful cloth dipes out there that I decided to learn to sew. Yeppers.... that's what started the whole obsession. Good luck to you. It is an insanely joyous time. Don't forget to make the wipes, too. They are super easy to make.

Thank you. We are heading to disney world . Feb 21-28. We just planned this trip last minute. I am scrambleing to get outfits together for Grace. She is going to be 20 months old on our trip.

Thank you to all of you who have complimented my Tinkerbell outfit. I am just starting to sew again after 15 years. I am always so amazed at the things you all make. I am often a lurker and don't post like I should. You really are a talented bunch of seamstresses. :grouphug:

Do any of you ever sell your used creations????? Looking for girl 10-12 and 12 months and boy 12 months. Thanks PM me.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments about the petti and embellished tee. I am sorry if my remarks started a debate on this ultra friendly board. However, I also guess it is good to discuss these things, too.

I do design and sell. However, it is more of a "hobby business" for me. I'm happy if I just cover my costs and we don't depend on this for any household income, but because I am in that community, I do know many people that do rely on their sales to pay household bills. Many of them are worried. I appreciate the links and read them and watched the video, and I have no doubt that this legislation was never aimed at those of us in the boutique children's clothing/accessory world. The way it is written though puts us right in the heart of it. I read it the same way many here do, and that is that to sell an item intended for children under 12, the item must be tested prior to selling. Just because we KNOW that dyed cotton fabrics, poly thread, buttons, etc do not contain hazardous elements is not good enought. We need to be able to provide proof it does, and that means having it tested. I also don't think the components we use to make these items will be tested prior to our buying it. The fabric manufacturers, for example, won't have to test because they will claim that the fabric is not necessarily intended for children under 12. It isn't until I (or someone else) buys all the individual components that it becomes intended for children. Now, will they go after the small boutique sellers? Probably not, but that doesn't change the fact that they could without warning ask me (or whoever) to provide proof of testing for any item we sell.

I think this is a great example of good intentions resulting in bad law. I just hope it all gets sorted out soon. I also think that having officials say, "Oh we don't mean this ot that" is not good enough. The wording in the written legislation has to be amended.

Anyway, that is my take on it. It saddens me greatly, and I have done all I can think to do. I'm not debating. Just sharing my thoughts on the subject. I will also say that I hope I am wrong and that "National Bankruptcy Day" does turn out to be blown out of proportion.

As for the lead in clothing stupid law. All I can say is this- UGH!!! What a mess!!!

Sad news to share...
My grammies closest sister past away today. She would have been 89 next month. She has been in a nursing home for many years and had been failing these last few days. I am glad my grammy got to go spend time with her yesterday.

They have asked me, my sister and another female cousin to be among the pallbearers. She is going to be buried near her husbands. It is a 250 mile trek up north for the funeral. Dh wants to go as a family. So we will have several hours in the car on thursday evening and then again on friday. But I really couldn't say no. All three of us have rearranged everything so we could be there for our cousin (who is a few weeks younger then my sister) as she goes through this mourning time.

Reality is hitting that my grammy will not be here forever. She is in great health so I am hoping to have her around for many years to come!

I was planning to work on the bowling shirt but I just can't get into it. I feel drained.

Thanks for listening.
I'm so sorry Anna. :grouphug:

I finished the Minnie Set...and wanted to share.

I love the Minnie outfit and the fabric! Great deal on the jeans!!!

I thought I would share a little project that I whipped up for Jenna. This actually took me like 15 minutes to complete.
S2010251-1.jpg

This really helped to make her room look much neater. All of those stuffed animals were all over her bed and floor and now she can move around and has plenty of room in her bed at night.
I need to do something like that for Tessa's room. There are animals EVERYWHERE!

I LOVE it!! No one will ever guess that you used a pillowcase (unless they're a disboutiquer).

That is SOO pretty! We don't see much lace around here, so I like that original touch!

This is for Megan of the Mindymouse BIG GIVE.

Jasmine in her pajamas??:confused3
Oh, I'm kidding! I love the Aurora shirt and so will Megan!

Ok I just have to share.

I know some of you have been around this board for awhile and know a little about my DD Morgan.

I was told (by "teachers") that she is "not capable of independant or creative thought".

That's my girl! How anyone could say she's not creative is beyond me!

Also, I showed Tyler your comments and he appreciated them very much. He also wanted you guys to know that he makes great Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins (we made those Sunday too.) He says I should be using more smilies cause our board "has the best smilies he has ever seen." :cool1:
He is so sweet! I'd love to try one of his chocolate chip banana muffins! I loved the pictures I saw a few pages back of him making his own quilt! What a great kid!

Please Pray...my mom just called, my Granny just had a stroke...please just pray for her.
Oh no, Kim! I'm be praying for her.

Yay!!! It's great to hear from you, T!

Ok, I just got started making tshirts for DS's bday party in March :cool1:

I thought I would make shirts instead of the cheap crap favors that people give out.
Well I have a problem, I bought way too much Wall E fabric! So do you guys think I should put it on free cycle or sell it? I know I have a little over 2 yrds left

Also where on earth do you find the pattern for the crayon roll thing?

TIA :thumbsup2

I'm back! Okay, I was somewhere around 35 pages behind. I am just not sure I'll get back through it all.

Anyway, I'm back. :)

I was at a conference at the Swan and Dolphin! It was in the 30s and 40s all week! Brrr!! Can you believe the only Disney place I made it to was the Boardwalk and Downtown Disney! They keep us very busy at the conference. One night they bussed us all to Universal Studios. It wasn't my beloved Disney, but it was FREE! :thumbsup2

Hope everyone is well!!!

This is for the Tinytreasures big give and went out last week:

This is a hat and scarf that Tessa made all by herself. It involved lots of knotting and a little bit of sewing with a big plastic needle. She was SO proud of herself!! She is trying to imitate the girl on the box in this picture.

I think that's it for now! I will be happy if I don't see another ruffle for QUITE some time!!

I tried resizing the pictures in photobucket. I hope it worked!
