The ball gown is silvery/ice blue. Her wedding dress (the one she rides away in at the end of movie) in the wedding coach--it's definitely white!:goodvibes

I always thought it was white, and never could figure out why the characters in the park are blue. But, I guess that's merchandising at work ... sell a blue dress and a white wedding dress to the same little girl. (But why anyone would put their six year old in a wedding gown I will never quite understand.)

Looking at the pics posted, I think the trim is white velvet ... it looks white regardless of surroundings, and velvet isn't very reflective. The main part is a white/shimmery/silvery very reflective fabric, so it shows blue-ish when surrounded by blue.

It's funny, but until we saw Cinderella in the parks and all of the modern princess gear...we always assumed it was the animation team's way to make it look like iridescent white or pearl. i.e. effects that can't really be animated... just implied. I know my mother's generation who saw it on the big screen when it debuted said they always assumed the dress to be white and that blue never even crossed their minds...i.e. that any bluish hue was to create the look of a white luminescent gown in the moonlight.

I wish I could find it, but somewhere someone has posted how the gown's color has been changed with each enhancement. i.e. each time they touch it up it gains just a little more of a hint of blue. I know for certain the colors have been modified over the years b/c the whole opening sequence had MUCH softer tones vs the Diamond edition we have on DVD...so it wouldn't shock me if the gown had also been touched up to look more blue as well.

That being said - it's been some time, but back in the 90s I remember reading something on the subject and it said the animators never intended the gown to be blue, but that it's evolved that way so that it wasn't confused with a wedding gown...i.e. making it more saleable in mass merchandising. If that's the case, either answer is correct.

I don't know if it's right and I don't know if the info above is 100% accurate, but I'm going with the opinions of the fam who saw it in the movies back in the 1950s and thought the dress was a pearly iridescent white. :goodvibes

We did a backstage tour a few years ago and the imagineers were having a very difficult time purchasing fabric for Cinderella's dresses because their previous supplier could no longer get it. They showed us what they were going with and stated that it wasn't the exact shade of blue they needed, but it was the closest they could find.

So based on our experiences with Walt Disney World seamstresses and imagineers, I have to say the color is blue.

We had a similar conversation in our house one Halloween when DS wanted to be Luke Skywalker from Return of the Jedi. The jedi cloak he wears looks both black and brown, depending on what moment of the scene (with Jabba) you're watching, and we must have watched that scene 20 times to figure out the true color. (we went with brown, and most of hubby's coworkers (they have ToT at the office) disagreed with our decision, calling DS Obi Wan, until they went and rewatched the scene)

If only they'd make it easier on us. :)

So I did some searching, and tumblr was able to provide me with what I think may be an answer. Cinderella's dress is white, but it would not transfer well from movie to the costume that we see at the parks. Thus, we see her in blue, and the blue was continued on in the form of any other images/merchandise etc that we see today.

According to wikipedia, the dress is shimmering light blue. On the Disney Wiki, it says "In her princess gown, she wore a sparkling white dress with white glass slippers. "

I think the only way we will officially find out is a) if someone contacts Disney and asks or b) we watch when the movie is re released this fall (it's out of the vault as of this October).

And just to throw a spanner in the works, Cinderella isn't pure blonde either but strawberry (some even say she's ginger and technically the first redhead princess). Time has changed the character from a dirty blonde with a silvery ballgown to golden blonde with a blue ballgown. Interesting the Cinderella we see in promotional material now is very different from the original.

Really enjoyed this debate/discussion! I also wanted to add, my DD has a Cinderella story CD, and in the story the narrator says "a dress the color of moonlight", which I thought was a perfect description of her dress in the movie - a silvery, white color!

I thought it was blue because the Fairy Godmother looks to the shade of Cinderella's eyes when she's coming up with the dress.

well... later today i will contact disney and ask the question and hope for an answer.

i was thinking, if i asked cinderella when i go in october, what do you think she would say? lol

To me, it is a very pale silvery shade of blue. MUCH more pale than the current iteration of the dress on merchandise and in the parks, but still blue, without a doubt.

It's funny how people see things differently. When I look at the photos you posted, I can't help but see blue. It's subtle but definitely there.

I thought it was blue because the Fairy Godmother looks to the shade of Cinderella's eyes when she's coming up with the dress.

:thumbsup2 Exactly.

White/silver or a very pale blue to me.

Cinderella is being rereleased? I wonder when it'll come out over here, I might get it.

I've never thought anything but light blue??? I guess because the peplums and gloves were white.
