Hi - again - pre-trip planning overload going on here

I vaguel recall seeing a thread about must do Christmas things whilst at DL - can anyone point me to the thread, I can't seem to find it (if it even exists - its likely I dreamt it) or if not - any hints.....? I am interested mainly in which hotel has the big tree...can you go and sit there and get a drink even if not staying at the hotel?

Thanks again - you guys are totally awesome, and doing a great job of keepnig me sane.

Don't have the answer, but wanted to ask where in NZ are you? We have very good friends in Invercargill and also in Wellington. We were just in Invercargill in June/July.

Sorry....back to your thread!

I dont know where the thread is either but I do remember it...I think. It was a list of all of the special things going on during christmas time there.

I think the amazing tree we all talk about is at the GCH and yes...everyone is welcome to be in the lobby...make sure you go sit in the big fireplace! :)

I think you need to have some time to just take it all in. It is so beautiful. The fireworks with the snow falling afterwards is wonderful. I highly recommend the holiday tour. It is a great opportunity to appreciate the decorations while learning a few facts. You get to walk on a few rides and then have front row seats for the parade, all while enjoying hot cocoa and my personal favorite, a mickey gingerbread man cookie. Man, I wish I had brought some home with me.

I wanted to ask about New Zealand too! :) My husband is from there, from Invercargill! Well actually a small town called Heddon Bush. And we were just there in August/September visiting his parents!

You are going to be there for a limited time and it will go by very fast, but you can get quite a bit in. You only have one FULL day in DLR, correct? The other day is a half day or a three-quarter day? I think you should make one list of everything you and your son could possibly want to do while there - this way, if you run into the 'what are we going to do next' slump, you pull out your handy list and have options without having to think about it. Then, make a back-up list of JUST the super-important stuff - the stuff you cannot miss, no matter how crowded it is, if it's raining, if you're tired, etc. The MUST-DO's. This will help you just in case you happen to get to DLR and see that the crowds are daunting and won't be able to do everything. You will have your list of the most imprtant stuff and can hit those things, one by one. I also think you should get your 2-day park hoppers, and when you arrive at DLR, get the lay of the land, see how busy it is and if it looks like you will be able to handle the things on your list, and if it seems a bit crowded or you are not sure if you can get everything in, then you can upgrade your ticket to the 3-day kind if you feel you want the extra time on the 20th. I know you are reluctant to do that because of the long flight and needing the sleep and all, but wait until you get to DLR and see what it looks like before you make your final decision. The Friday and weekend right before Christmas - which that is - is always very busy. Remember, just taking time with your son in A Bug's Land (cool holiday decorations and fun stuff for kids) to explore all the attractions, and then meet Mickey and explore ToonTown will take a chunk of time out of your day. This isn't even counting any other rides, shops, restuarants, picture-taking, etc. And let's not forget the Reindeer Round-Up - another thing that will take a chunk of time.

My trips usually seem to entail about 2 days in the park, roughly. Last December, we had about 2-1/2 days, and that was the most we got accomplished in any recent trip because we were able to space everything out and pace ourselves with rest breaks and what not, so no one got fatigued and unable to carry on, and we got a lot done that we wanted to do! When we tried to condense things into 1-1/2 days - which is what happened this past October and last year in September - we were irritable, cranky and sluggish, and didn't get nearly as much done because we would try to pack too many things into small chunks of time, if that makes sense. So we burnt out faster but got less accomplished at the end of the day!!

Oh, and the GCH lobby is gorgeous. That has the big tree, as Krissy already said. If you like carolers, they sing in the lobby every day and night and people curl up on the comfy couches and chairs and listen to them, sipping drinks and cocoa and what not. There is also the hearth area, where you can sit by the fire. Santa is there too, somewhere between 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. It is a nice way to unwind from a long day. But you don't want to miss the beautiful nighttime lights at the Castle and IASW, and snowfall/lights on Main Street, so make sure you devote one of your nights to doing that!

You will have a blast! (And you will LOVE Goofy's!)

Did you have a good time here??

Hehehehe - small world huh :lmao: funny how you always find people who knows someone you know - or close to!

Hope you had a good time visiting here as well.

Thank you so much Sherry - I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to me, and give such great advice. I'd never thought of upgrading to a 3 day park-hopper - that might work if needed!!!

I do have a list of the rides/things I (*** he doesn't know) really want to go on - rides I think he'd enjoy - hes a nervous 6yr old so not expecting him to be on Space Mountain! I am hoping to be in the parks from about 3pm on Thursday (starting with DCA as I really want to see the Pixar Parade) and possibly hoping to DL afterwards - for as long as we can keep going, and then the Friday is the FULL day that we have which I have set aside for DL, parades, reindeer round-up etc. I don't really want to do the parks commando style, just hope to take it nice and easy - and have fun together, even if its packed.

Thanks again for the wonderful advice/suggestions :flower3:

Oh, no problem at all! My pleasure!:goodvibes I know you have a lot to accomplish at DLR in a short period of time, so it helps to get ideas! If you do not end up upgrading your Park Hoppers when you get to DLR (I think you can upgrade them on the second day, too, if I am not mistaken, as long as it's before they expire) and you decide to wander through DTD on the 20th, check out Dept. 56 - a really cool store for kids AND adults. Lots of cute, elaborate displays and festive gum drop people/animals. There is also Build-a-Bear and, of course, World of Disney. Rainforest Cafe also has a cute gift shop. And Santa will also be at the other two DLR hotels besides the GCH, so you can catch him at DLH or PPH.

At least you know what you can eliminate from your lists - no thrill rides like Space Mountain or Tower of Terror. Definitely take DS on TSMM and Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters! Those are SO much fun! Just remember - have the CAN'T MISS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES list and the EVERYTHING WE WOULD EVER POSSIBLY WANT TO DO IF WE HAVE TIME list!!! Having those two lists really helps in those slow, dragging 'what are we doing next' periods and in the super hectic, 'the crowds are outrageous' periods!!

And make sure to let me know how you like Goofy's when you get back!:thumbsup2

Jumpin Jellyfish
a bugs land

Turtle Talk with Crush
Pixar Play Parade

DL
Nemo Submarine
Buzz Lightyear AstroBlaster
Gadgets Go-Coaster
Pirates of the Caribbean
It’s a small world
Peter Pans flight

Sounds like a good Can't Miss list to me so far! I LOVE the Roger Rabbit ride. So fun! And you guys can meet Mickey in his house in ToonTown. There are always characters roaming around in ToonTown.

Would your DS be too scared by the Haunted Mansion Holiday? I don't think I saw it on your list. It is really cool, but may be too scary for a 6-year-old. You will be able to save yourself a lot of time if you ride IASWH in the daytime, as the lines get crazy at night when the holiday lights come on. But be sure to see at the lights on IASW at night, as they are stunning, but ride it in the daytime!!!

I can't imagine you wouldn't have great fun at Goofy's - and remember, I have us booked for Goofy's on the 20th at 7:00 a.m., just in case you do get up early! Some people have had less than satisfying experiences there but most of the time, it is a home run. Everyone I have brought there or sent there has enjoyed it.

The only offical 'plans' I have at the moment are the PS's. I made two PS's for Goofy's this trip, and I have one for dinner at Storytellers on the 19th, dinner at Carnation Cafe on the 20th and dinner at Wine Country Trattoria on the 21st- but I may change the WCT one to Steakhouse 55. We may go back to ESPN Zone at some point, because they have great food. I want to get a gingerbread man with Mickey ears cookie this time - I didn't get one last December. We have our favorite rides - POTC, TSMM, HMH, Roger Rabbit, Buzz Lightyear, Soarin', Mike and Sully, etc., so we always do those. We will go to the GCH on either the night of the 19th (maybe we will see you there) or 20th and sit in the lobby to listen to the carolers and drink a beverage! I will have a LGMH dangling from my bag, so look for it! We will also take a lot of PhotoPass pictures, since that was a big hit in October!

Speaking of a beverage, it is cold and gray outside today - winter is almost here - and I feel like drinking cocoa and turning on Christmas music!

I'm not sure about HMH - he may be Ok, he may totally freak out - might just play that one by ear. Def Toon Town as well, forgot about that one! Opps.

I can't wait to ride IASWH - daytime sounds like a plan, thanks - are the lines for this quite long? DS liked Dumbo at DL Paris too, so might try that again......so many options and so little time!

I think Goofys will be a hit, it's his birthday a week before we leave so that day is going to be a birthday celebration, so have booked the party bag thing, and they are going to bring him a cupcake (and again later at Cafe Orleans - lucky boy!) got to remember to stop for the birthday badge's as well.

I wanted to go to Carnation cafe - am drooling over the loaded potato soup, but somehow didn't think we'd manage goofys, carnation cafe and cafe orleans in the same day! Got to save something for next time too.

Ohhh - winter for you - is almost summer here! Has made it into the 20's (high 60's F I think) for the last few days - really unusual for NZ at this time of year.

That's crazy! It's in the '20s for your (almost) summer, and lately (with the exception of today), it has been in the upper '80s for our (almost) winter!! That is wild.

As for the IASW lines, last year in December, we must have gone on that ride three times (we never seem to ride it unless it is the holiday version!), and two of the times were during the day. We literally walked right onto the ride both times. The only time it took us to get on it was the time it took to wind around in the queue. There were hardly any people in the daytime because the IASW facade is not lit up in its beautiful holiday lights so it doesn't look all that unusual or special. So the third time we rode it, we went at night and the exterior of the IASW building is so stunningly beautiful and colorful with the light display that it attracts people from all ends of BOTH parks and the line was about 45 minutes long, and was headed into ToonTown. Some rides have lines that move fast, no matter what the wait time says - like TSMM has a pretty fast-moving line even if it says it's a long wait. But the IASWH line took a while at night. I just couldn't believe how many people were there. It was crazy! But you have to SEE IASWH at night, just so get a sense of how breathtaking it is. Just ride it in the daytime!!

Carnation is good, but it can certainly wait for another trip. Your little boy will love when the characters at Goofy's - and a waiter or two - come and 'sing' (or gesture) their odd version of a birthday song to him. Along with his cupcake (the cupcakes are not that tasty - just a warning!), they will also bring him a Goofy's Kitchen button to go with his regular birthday button that you get for him at City Hall or at the hotels. He should have fun with the Mickey-shaped waffles and Mickey-shaped peach and apple cobbler, and various other yummy food. Don't know if you are a meat eater, but the bacon at Goofy's is excellent, and so is the fruit! They keep their fruit so juicy and fresh!

Oh, you can also get your son a First Time Visit button at City Hall when you get the birthday button!:goodvibes

well mid-20s (centigrade) which is I think about mid 60's Fahrenheit, but still weird that our summer is colder than your winter - whereabouts are you?

I am so excited about the trip, and surprising my little boy with the letter from Mickey Mouse when we get to HoJos' can't wait to see his face!

I wasn't expecting much from the cupcake really - think he'll just like the attention and singing. Mickey shaped cobbler!!!! Wow - am def having Mickey waffles too - and gotta have some good bacon! Yummo

Ohh - so you can get more than one button at a time? will do that - will make good reminders when we get home

Not long to go now!!!!

Oh, your son will LOVE the letter from Mickey! That is awesome! That will set the tone for the whole trip - he will be totally enchanted by this wonderland that awaits him! (Remember, don't rule out the idea of upgrading your Hopper to a third day so you can get some more valuable park time on the 20th before you leave - you may find that you need it!)

I live in Los Angeles, near Beverly Hills and Hollywood. It has been a very warm fall this year, in the 90's a lot. I like cold weather, so I am happy if it gets down to 30 degrees in December at night! It rarely does, though!

Yes, you can go into City Hall and tell them, "This is our first visit AND it is my son's birthday. May we have both buttons?" They will definitely give them to you! They won't even hesitate! They want to make the customers - especially kids - happy! And then, as I said, your boy will also get a button at Goofy's when they bring the cupcake. As good as the rest of their breakfast buffet food is, I was shocked that the cupcake was bad. The one that my friend got was dry. It seemed like it had been sitting in a back room somewhere for a month. It was also very dark chocolate - and not all kids will like that flavor. Maybe they have different ones now, hopefully!

Yes, the apple and peach cobbler have Mickey shaped crust in them. It is adorable! I remember you said in one of your posts a long time ago that you were interested in Mickey-shaped food, so there is no shortage of it to be found in DLR. I even love the Mickey merchandise that looks like Mickey-shaped food! In another thread, you see I posted pictures of my Mickey food magnets, and then another poster put up a picture of some Mickey food keychains that were found on eBay! I LOVE that stuff.
