Christians suing for the right to be intolerant

Yes, where in the bible does it say one has to speak out against homosexuality to be practicing their faith?

Wouldn't say, feeding the poor, be a better use of a Christian's time, energy and money?

Where in the Bible does it say not to! You can't expect to find everything one does or doesn't do specifically addressed in the bible. I agree feeding the poor would be a better use of her time.

But that's exactly the point. These people who are suing are using the argument that their religion requires them to be intolerant/harrass gays. They say that because they are unable to do so it limits their freedom of religion. I would love to see the quote from the bible that says in order to be a Christian you have to harrass other groups.

Being intolerant and harassing are two different things. The Bible does say to hate sin. Does that make me intolerant of the sin as the bible teaches, yes it does! Does it mean I'm to harass those who I "precieve" to be committing the sin, no way! I should reach out in christian love to them!

Don't think I agree with this group mentioned above, as my response was directed to several particular posters who try to use "where in the bible" scenario to spew their ant-christian disdain!

She's got the right to say what she wants. If she wants to protest chimneys or asparagus, she's got the right to do that, too. Freedom of speech has to apply to everyone or it doesn't exist. We can't say, "You are free to say what you wish as long as I agree with it," ya know?

IMHO, the less attention these people get, the better.

Policies intended to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination end up discriminating against conservative Christians. Evangelicals have been suspended for wearing anti-gay T-shirts to high school, fired for denouncing Gay Pride Month at work, reprimanded for refusing to attend diversity training. When they protest tolerance codes, they're labeled intolerant.

This quote is from the link that was attached. Sorry, but I agree with most of it. I would never speak out, but I find Gay Pride Month stupid, as I do the whole cottage industry of diversity training. Why shouldn't someone (fundamental Christian or not) be able to speak out against Gay Pride Month?

Yep. That's exactly it.

But, I would argue that yes, the Bible DOES say not to. Christ said, 'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another'.... that's all. It said love one another - not judge one another, not love straight people but not gay people... Anytime you are showing compassion to another human, you are living in accordance with God's word. When you display intolerance, disdain, and hatred for another human, you are not living Christ's words.

Saying "where in the bible does it say something" is spewing hatred?

Most fundamentalist "Christians" are clueless to the true teachings of Christ.

They seem to think that once they become "believers" they become ersatz Gods, able to judge all around them.

They skip over the "love your neighbor" parts and get right to the good stuff: telling everyone else around them how they're sinners (because focusing on other people is much more rewarding than doing the hard things Jesus really taught).

Kitka, yours is the sentiment of a true Christian if ever I saw one. Amen!

Who are "these people"?

People should be allowed to speak or protest. It's sad, but it puts them in the same league of some pretty serious and notorious hate groups. If that's the bed they're willing to sue to lie in, let em. I say the more they are allowed to speak the better.

I believe he/she means the extreme KKK kind of folk. I agree with the sentiment. Ignoring poor behavior does a remarkable job in curtailing it. Our town actually only had a few people show for the big KKK rally about 6 years ago. They've not been back since.

Of course. You're free to speak out against fundamental Christians. In fact, it's rather trendy to do so.

:rotfl2: Well put!

I agree--let the hatemongers discredit themselves. The answer to bad speech is good speech, not repression. I can't stand fundamentalists, but either we have free speech or we do not have free speech.

Of course, if she is doing things that actually disrupt other students' right to learn, that is another story.

All of 'em. The nuts. The "religious" against gay people, the Farrakhan people, the KKK, etc., etc.

They thrive on getting attention for their dumb-*** crap. (I self-censored there, so the DIS doesn't have to.:))

They want a debate, and they're getting one. It gets people to listen to "their side." Honestly, if people would just let 'em protest and ignore them, it'd take all the wind out of their sails. They'd be going, "Huh? Whadda we do now?"

I am a total supporter of Freedom of Speech. But that doesn't mean everyone has to listen, for crying out loud.

I thank God every day that this ignorant girl and those like her are not representative of the entire Christian population. She can say what she wants about homosexuals, bags of twine and houses made of straw. That's what makes the U.S. what it is today. And it's those same laws that will one day protect all of us, not just some.

She's an ignorant idiot that is the result of inbreeding. There, I said it. Aint free speech grand?

The Bible says extraordinarily little about homosexuality - almost nothing DIRECTLY. Jesus never spoke about it - even according to the Gnostic and Apocryphal Gospels. IMO, it is a silly area for Christians to spend any energy at all. (Fore the record, I am a convinced, religious, practicing Christian).

Basically, yes!

And I am a girl. OK, woman. At my age, I guess I can't be a girl anymore, which is much more upsetting to me than who is protesting whom this week.
