Tour Central Florida's Most Fined Restaurants
Egg Shells In Front Of Dumpter, Messy Restrooms Among 'Highlights'

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Egg shells on the ground by the dumpster, messy restrooms, employees chowing down just inside the kitchen were just a few highlights of WESH 2 News's tour of Central Florida's restaurants that have been fined the most money by the state.
WESH 2 News obtained the list from the Division of Hotels and Restaurants' Web site, where many inspection reports are available to the public.
When the state slaps a restaurant with a fine, they put that online, too.
We went back 18 months and looked at reports for Central Florida's nine counties from June 2003 to February 2005. We crunched the numbers and came up with the top three.
WESH 2 News consumer reporter Michelle Meredith paid each restaurant a visit, with a camera, so she could see and sample what each had to offer. So, which restaurant paid out the most money in fines?
No. 1 on the list is the Iron Chef Super Buffet, also known as the Great China Super Buffet, in Kissimmee. Twice, once last June and again this February, the state slapped the Iron Chef with fines totaling $5,100.
How's it doing now? We quickly learned why it's called "Super" -- there was tons of food.
However, we were not impressed. Everything on Meredith's plate that was supposed to be hot was cold. In fact, that's the reason the Iron Chef was fined in February.
Chicken on the hot buffet line was not hot enough for inspectors. It was holding at 118 degrees when it was supposed to be 135 degrees, a critical violation that could make diners sick.
Meredith's trip to the ladies room was interesting. She found a cooking pot in the restroom, under the bathroom sink.
Back out in the restaurant, not one, but two, exit doors were blocked with junk. One was blocked by a fairly large TV and a fan. But that was nothing compared to the mountain of junk by the dumpster. Front and center was a box of egg shells, fair game for any varmint.
A representative of the restaurant told Meredith that the restaurant currently has no problems, that they're under new management and if Meredith shows up again, they'll "call the police."
It was a different story at Dragon China on Sandlake Road. When Meredith walked in, the place looked beautiful.
"(I got) vegetable lo mein, and we got our food very quickly. I mean quick, minutes," she said.
And, she said, it tasted good.
However, the state did fine Dragon China twice for a total of $4,900. In inspection after inspection of Dragon China last year, there were rows and rows of critical violations. In one inspection alone, there were 14 critical violations. Three days later, the inspector went back and found 16 more. The violations included cold food not being cold enough and rice being stored on the floor.
Most violations were found in the kitchen, which Meredith was not allowed to see. Her crew did see a dirty men's room and a blocked door. So, the crew took a trip out back.
"Well, for starters, they're not supposed to have that door propped open like that because critters can get in," Meredith said. Moments later, an employee plopped down and starting eating. You're not supposed to eat in the kitchen's food-prep area, although the employee was on the edge.
Finally, Meredith and her crew visited the restaurant with the third-highest fines -- the Bennigan's at 6324 International Drive.
When she dropped in, she found the Bennigan's basically in good shape, but that apparently was not the case last year. The state fined Bennigan's twice, costing them $3,800. On four separate trips, the inspector found a cooler that was not keeping food cold enough -- a critical violation.
Meredith did find the ladies room in need of attention, but the restaurant itself was clean and organized and the wings were delicious.

So it looks like Iron Chef Super Buffet, also known as the Great China Super Buffet, in Kissimmee and Dragon China off of 27 on Sand Lake Road are a no go as well as Bennigan's at 6324 International Drive!
