Children's Clothing

Target and Kohl’s. I buy stuff on sale or off the clearance rack. We have also gotten jackets from Costco.

I'm surprised so many people shop at Target for clothing. The last item of clothing I bought from Target was a maternity tee-shirt when I was expecting my now 24-year old. I wore that tee-shirt once and loved it, but when I washed it for the first time, it shrank -- I could never use it again.

It seems kind of silly to write off an entire store that sells lots of different brands because you bought one shirt that didn't hold up 24 years ago.

About 15 yrs ago When my girls were in 12 month to 2T I bought their clothes from eBay . No one upthread has mentioned eBay, is that not a source for kids clothing now?
I bought things from eBay when my girls were younger, but I had better luck with kids' clothes at consignment stores.

I didn't say it was the only thing I bought from Target /didn't like. I said it was the last time I bought clothing from them -- that shirt was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Like others, I shop different places depending on the purpose. Mine are a bit older now, so for basics it's often Target (We like Cat & Jack's), Marshalls, Kohls. Mine wear a lot of "athleisure" stuff as well so Dick's Sporting Goods too. We've always liked Land's End as well - especially for outerwear (snowpants with extra hems sewn in to last longer!) and bathing suits! I've found that they're bathing suits are good quality and often last a couple of seasons, and have "good coverage", especially the girls' suits. It used to be nice that you could return online items to Sears, but I think our local Sears is closing. For the bathing suits, I'd always wait until after 7/4, and they'd have big sales! Since they usually lasted a couple of seasons, I always had a couple that worked from last year for early spring/summer! For more fun/dressy stuff (and more expensive) when they were younger, we liked mostly Mini Boden and Tea, but always on sale, lol!

I also wanted to say that I've purchased a lot of my kids' clothes through the years at thrift stores. Kids grow out of stuff so fast that you really can find great quality stuff. One of my faves is our (district-wide) school one, where I also volunteer. I mention it because a lot of the communities around us have them (they seem to be good fundraising programs), so maybe yours might too, you never know! I save all my best stuff to donate there because it's for the school/community, and I've found many "treasures" for them over the years, including sports clothes/equipment too! If your school district doesn't have one, a quick search and you may find a gem of a thrift store! There are also a lot of one-time local sales and stuff with a ton of upscale items that I've found through community facebook pages - I've sold and purchased at places like that! And other posters may have mentioned, a lot of communities have buy/sell pages on FB too, although that's individuals selling stuff so can be more of a pain - I belong to a few but don't find I've used them much...happy shopping!

I noticed nobody mentioned off-price stores like Ross, Marshalls, T.J. Maxx, Burlington, etc. I know there are other regional names, but I looked up and all four of the aforementioned stores are in the OP's area.

Sometimes what they have are little-known brands, but a lot of what they stock are just stuff that department stores or even manufacturers couldn't sell.

Not sure about this place. Sounds promising though.

We buy our grandkids clothes at Target (like the Cat and Jack brand) and Osh Kosh. Sometimes we buy something at Kohls.

I mentioned Marshalls (also good for athleisure!) and I think a few other posters did too. I've never been a big fan of Burlington for some reason. That Bargainhunt looks interesting but sadly not in my area..

I took a quick look and I missed that, but again there are at least 4 major chains. I don't know much about Bargain Hunt other than it seems to be a big chain in the south.

I'm not quite sure if Stein Mart has children's clothes. I found that they do have children's shoes and toys, but I don't see anything about clothing.

If you don’t need anything in particular, (the boy needs a new coat still despite all my shopping online and in person) this place can have some amazing deals! I bought brand new target branded flats for 2.50 in some funky colors, they were a fourth of the cost of a drink, so yeah! If there is one in anyone’s area I highly recommend it for general browsing. I’ve found fancy cosmetics, shoes, clothes, kitchen crap, etc. I’ve had 0 luck with kids clothes there but want to recommend it for sure.

Thanks to everyone for the great tips! Rereading this I realize I forgot to look at lands end for the boys coat and I’m about to do some browsing!

Side note: we need lots of tights and leggings in this house as the girl doesn’t really “do” pants...I had no idea basic black/white, etc. tights were so dang expensive. Some dresses were cheaper than the tights that were needed to go with them. Yikes!

I wish my kids would go for athleisure. They’re so little and so opinionated. The little guy will only wear clothes “like daddy”; the girl doesn’t like pants and the boy would wear sing dang rain boots every day if we’d let him...he’s worn them to school with shorts on blistering hot days. Some days it’s not worth the fight.

I forgot to mention H&M. I've gotten some cute clothes there at reasonable prices. If your kid isn't skinny skip them though. I avoid places like Ross and Marshalls because I don't have time for hit and miss. In fact, I usually shop online for clothes since my kids lack the patience for going into stores to look at clothes.

I would like to know where y'all buy your kids' uniform pants and shorts. My kids are rough on theirs. I tried Children's Place and wasn't impressed with their navy pants because they faded horribly and looked beat up pretty quickly.

I’ve heard more about uniforms than any other children’s clothing as most of my friends kids are a few years older, and I always hear that Jc penny has great uniform pieces that hold up through multiple children. I bought the boy several pants online so we’ll see how they go.

One year I bought my DD’s whole prom outfit at Ross; dress, shoes, strapless bra, shrug and bag for $47 out the door. She looked as cute, if not cuter than some of those girls in $300 dresses.

I’ve never shopped Marshals and you couldn’t pay me to go to Burlington anymore.

So, looking for opinions on best places to buy children's clothes for cost vs. quality. I'm too cheap to buy all the kids' clothes at Nordstorm's despite their very targeted and adorable advertising and I've been really unhappy with some things from Zullily and Old Navy (although, that may have been the boy). Do any of you parents have any brand loyalty in this regard? I've been very happy with things from Carter's (and love their sales prices!) but I'd love recommendations. We've got some serious winter clothes shopping to do this weekend either in person or online.

My youngest is a teenager now, but all their clothing came from: Target, Walmart, JC Penney, Old Navy or The Children's Place. When DD was little, I also dressed her in a lot of stuff from Gymboree, but I never shopped in the store, it all came from Once Upon A Child...no way I'd pay the prices they asked in the store.

I hear you on that! I definitely pick my battles! I love little jeans on toddlers/kids but my daughter always refused to wear them - "too buttony and zippity" in her opinion. That's when I tried Mini Boden because they had adorable elastic waist jeans with little hearts on the knees - so cute! But she wouldn't wear those either! She still won't - mostly leggings and yoga pants! I try to slip in the occasional jegging, but those usually go unworn...

I think I went through a rain boot to school phase!

The vast majority of our son's clothing came from friends. We have a friend with a boy about a year older than ours and they give us their clothes as their son outgrows them. We also get a lot at some local resale places. It makes so much more sense than buying everything new.

For the new clothing we buy mostly at Target or Carter's and he has a lot of stuff from Disney parks.
