Chef Mickey's-only bad reviews?

I keep seeing bad reviews of Chef Mickeys for breakfast, but friends still tell me that it's one of their must do's. We have ressies for breakfast. We have been to Cape May and Crystal palace, so how will Chef Mickey's compare? Is it as nice and clean? Good/comparable food/choices? Anyone like it???????

To be honest, CP is my favorite- I like the food and atmosphere better than CM. However, we are also doing CM on both of our next trips.

The food is very average. We are going for the opportunity to see the Fab Five without having to wait in multiple lines for hours. DD's also liked the celebration thing they did too (twirling napkins in the air and dancing around).

We just went to Chef Mickey's last week...and found it lacking in comparison to CP. The food was ok, but just that; it was the only character meal our dd wanted so we decided to try it. Too many heavy breakfast casseroles that were heavily spiced for a morning meal. Cheese blintzes not all they're cracked up to be imo. I'm glad we went to cross it off our list, but we enjoyed our time in the Contemporary just exploring and riding the monorail more than the actual meal. Character interaction was a bit rushed and blah that day, too. Bacon was good though!

I think it depends on your expectations. It's lively with classic Disney characters. There's a decent variety of standard breakfast food.

IMHO I just think it's over-rated because for some reason this breakfast is the most expensive breakfast buffet in WDW and the only reason I see why is because it's in such high demand. The food is just average. 1900 Pk Fare has so many more choices.

We went for my dd's bday last year. The server brought a cupcake with a candle and that was pretty much it. We sang happy birthday to her. The characters didn't come to the table to help with that like they used to do (no confetti or anything like that) and this was during the "what are you celebrating promotion". I was disappointed in that. We had been there many times before although not for a while and I won't be rushing back anytime soon, if at all.

Even at Rose & Crown in the UK a few months prior for my birthday, several of the servers sang happy birthday to me and gave me an award?? Shouldn't my dd have gotten more of a reception like that?? Quite frankly I felt bad for her, I mean she's a kid and they should make a big deal of her birthday.

I think there are far more better breakfast buffets with better food and better variety than this one that costs less. If you're on the DDP and never been it may be worth checking out. But if your paying cash and your child is over 9 then they're adult price ($26.62 each), $77 for breakfast for a family of 3 is a little steep for that breakfast and that was discounted with the TIW!

My family and I have been to Chef Mickey's a few times for dinner and each time we had nothing to complain about because the food was good, service was good and the character interaction was great. However just like with bad reviews of the resorts if someone has a bad experience at a restaurant chances are they will post about, because they were upset at whatever happened to them.

We always used to go to CP, but decided we wanted to try different characters so tried Chef Mickeys, the food is generally very good! we just love the fun and charater interaction, we love swinging our napkins in the air (even though we are all adults) We feel its a much funner atmosphere than CP.

Not a chef mickey's fan here. The swinging napkin thing lost it's appeal when food was flying- gross! If you have food on your napkin skip the swinging!

And the food was awful the 2 times we went. (after a first fantastic trip- so 3 in total) We give everyone another chance after a bad meal because everyone can have an off day- 2 bad ones it's off the list.
CM is off our list.
CP is just more sunshiney? Lighter happier feel kind of place. Bright. And our server was fine.

every trip. I think CP and Tusker House have better food, but my kids want to see these characters. (That might include my wife who poased with Minnie this past trip.)

I'm one of those who isn't a CM fan. I think if you're just there for the experience of the characters it's fine, but I think the restaurant is filthy and the food is gross. We've always had good service though.
My favorite is Tusker House, and we see and the Big Guns at that meal too.
Also, we like CP very much and once again with this trip we'll be hitting both TH and CP but skipping CM.

Agreed. We did Chef Mickey breakfast several time when my nephews were small, but I never really thought we got a bang for our buck. Prefer CP and Cape May. Felt the characters were less rushed at Cape May and the food was better.

Detractors of Chef Mickey's have been particularly vocal lately, myself included. I don't like the place one bit and have made my opinion heard in various posts. The fare at breakfast is fairly standard and nonthreatening, but dinner is actually disgusting. Everything on the buffet looks old, lumpy and slimy. The funky aftertaste comes at no surprise.

It's the one restaurant on property that always reminds me of your hometown buffet. You know, that place that you visit when you have nothing in the fridge. Even with low expectations, you regret the decision afterward. Chinese takeout would have been a better solution.

I suspect Chef Mickey's popularity is based on tradition and clever marketing techniques that began 30 years ago.

I don't adore Crystal Palace. But the atmosphere is more inviting, the characters are bouncier and the food is just fine.

We've done both breakfast and dinner at CM. Dinner was awful but breakfast was excellent. The food was good and the characters were quick to get to our table, great interaction as well. We're making an ADR here next trip as well.

Let me echo this - I'm glad to have this info. We're going to CM for the first time ever (breakfast) and truth be told, I'm a wee bit nervous about it. I'm planning on calling the restaurant directly to discuss our ADRs, as we've got a group of 12, I'd like to order two of those little princess cakes (two birthday girls), and one full-sized cake (four un-birthday kids). The ADRs at CM and Ohana are DH and my gift to our family for this family reunion, so I really, really hope all goes well.

We did CM and CP during spring break and CMC during Christmas '08. CMC had the best food and was the most comfortable setting. But it wasn't that much greater than the other two. I would have no problem going to any of three any time. But If I had to choose, give me a CP ADR an hour before MK rope drop!

Think about it this way...

How many people are on the Dis?

How many people eat at CM's daily?

What you see here is but a SMALL portion of the people who eat there on a daily basis. Plus, people are more likely to post about a bad experience then they are about a good one.

That being said, CMs isn't a place to expect awesome food. Edible? Yes. Decent? Yes. Incredible? Eh... Cm's is known for the character interaction and the fact that it is an easy way to see Mickey and Minnie.

We ate there last month for the first time and enjoyed it so much that we cancelled another reservation at the end of the trip and went to Chef Mickey's a second time.
