Censorship yes or no

ToriLamy we are trying to get it to be like the DB not quite there yet but wait till JJ/VH gets here it will be all over but the crying then hehehe. Kadaten when my mother had her condo it was a highrise some of the owners decided that it would be a great idea to have a camera in the lobby for when you buzz people up so they put it in at the expence of the people that lived there and then they had some that wanted to change hot water heaters get larger ones etc. So everyone had to do it not just the people that wanted them and all the owners had to pay for it out of their pockets so yes it does happen.

While I am very sad to see the debate board go, I do not believe that it is censorship.

It's Pete's site and he has every right to make any decision he wishes here and we need to respect that! I can't say that I understand it all, to me it's sort of moving the DB here on the CB, and I don't think the people who come to this board want all the debaters here, but we all still need to respect that he has the right to make this decision.

Oh I agree N.Bailey but it was a step backwards now because all the people from the CB are going to be reporting posts left right and centre because they will not want it ont their board so the mods are going to be even busier trying to police the debates on here now.

I don't disagree with you, but if/when that happens, I suspect we'll be hearing more at that point. I believe we will either be told that there will be no debating at all, or if we get lucky, perhaps the debate board will be opened again. All the fuss everyone is making now though, is bound to have negative consequences for all of us. If they say we can't debate at all, it will be a much sadder day.

I think the guidelines' reference to censorship should be taken in context--and if I remember correctly, the context of it is in regards to Dreams and not censoring negative comments about it or censoring positive comments about other companies.

It's an active choice to have that policy, since the site is within its rights to censor what it wants. Only the government can be guilty of censorship in the context that it's being discussed here.

No, I don't think it's censorship. I *do* think the CB is going to hate this decision, though. ;)

I don't think the CB had anything to say about this and I don't like the decision because I don't want to see all the stupid topics that are on the DB brought over to the CB. It is Pete's web site and ultimately his decision to do what he wants on his site. If you want, go find another board like EZBoard and start a Debate board yourselves and fight all you want!

As someone who used to LOVE reading the DB, although never posted on it, I'm very sad to see it go :( That said, does anyone know of any good DB-type boards that are still around to replace the DIS for me? Please PM me :)

Also, yes, of course it is censorship, but it's Pete's site and he can do whatever he pleases since this is not a democracy. To say it isn't censorship is just silly.

I disagree. That's like saying that if my neighborhood likes lawn flamingoes, I should be required to put them on MY lawn because the public feels they are entitled to seeing them there. If I own it, I make the rules.

:p

Oh, god...here we go...

:charac2: (that's a violin for dramatic effect)

I did notice on the DB that most posters there were repulsed by group hugs and pixie dust. Debaters' kryptonite, if you will...So I'm wondering if the hard core DBers will really take up permanent residence here on the CB.

Since I visited both the DB and the CB, this is kind of cool...I get one-stop shopping now. Or it's like my parents meeting my in-laws for the first time, except nobody brought a bottle of wine to smooth the introductions out.

It's censorship - but Pete can do what he likes with his board. If he owned a bar he could ban people for brawling and breaking the furniture. Or bringing their flamingoes.

There are plenty of other places you can go to exchange vitriol or genuine opinion.

I liked reading and joining in on the DB, but agree it had become practically impossible to debate with a certain person hijacking every political (and some of the non-political) threads with his/her lunatic, unsubstantiated posts.

And I don't mean Van Helsing. ;)

I agree there was some bashing over there but not any worse than what I have seen on this board in recent history.

I didn't say the CB had anything to do with the decision. I said the CB isn't going to like the decision. Because I do think a number of us will be coming over here to talk. (Pssst, a number of already were! I've been posting on the CB for a while!) ESPECIALLY with the election coming up.

BTW, nice twisting of my words and telling us to go away if we don't like your opinion. You would have fit right in on the DB. ;)

(Oh, on the DB, ;) means we're kidding!)

Good one katerkat especially for posting the wink and reason for it don't want to ruffle the feathers. That would be outside the guidelines hehehehe wink wink.

Really? I did not know that? Thanks for keeping me up on things.

BTW, don't twist my words, either. I just was saying that if one believes there is censorship here on Pete's site, just start another web site where you can do anything you want. That is all I was saying. This is exactly why I did not venture over to the DB.

I find this statement very offensive.. Talk about "painting with a broad brush"!

While "some" of the topics may have been "stupid", there were others that were quite informative.. Generalizations such as the one you have made above are exactly the type of comments that can turn a post into a heated debate on ANY board - even the "pixie dust" board..

Of course it is censorship. Something does not have to be government sponsored to be called censorship. But the rule still applies...His board...he can censor all he wants. If I have a group meeting in my home and have a rule that the presidential race is not to be discussed in any way, I am censoring those who attend. But it is still my meeting, my rules, and if people HAVE to talk about the race, they are welcome to go elsewhere.

amen!

Not censorship. I believe the person who pays the bills to run and update the servers can choose which boards are on the site. A decision was made that the debate forum did not fit the vision of the site by the owner and his webmasters.

And how is that not censorship? If we accept as a given that they have the absolute right to do as they please with their site ( which we do ), surely that includes the right to censor at will. I am not understanding why everyone keeps saying that it is not censorship BECAUSE they have the right to do as they wish.
