Censorship yes or no

It's legal censorship. I'll miss the board and I think it will carry debates over onto cb. If you say that he has to allow it or radio stations do then what you are saying is you can work, purchase a business, and have no real say as to the content of that business. You will take away business owners rights. Your employer can limit your speech as can schools, etc..

Nope, not censorship. I like Serenas explaination...Petes board, we play by his rules. If people dont like it they arent forced to be here.

Yep, it's censorship. It's Pete's board and he can censor us
anytime he likes. It's censorship but so what!? I admit that
I am jealous over the power he has and in awe of it.
I also admit to being amazed that the debate board lasted
so long. It really should have been called the Insult Board.
Censorship- yes it is but hey, this isn't a democracy.

Yes but knight what you are saying happens all the time look at a condo corp if the corp votes on a design change wether you want it or not you pay for it to be done so it all conforms to the total look even though you may own it same thing here and Pete pays the bills with the help of the people that sponsor him both members of the boards and other private companies still a form of censorship.

I think this has always been true of decent internet discussion boards. If a person says something out of line, a good moderator will remove it. I haven't always been pleased with certain comments/threads being removed, but I respect the right of a moderator, put in place by the owner of a board, to remove what is likely to be offensive to most people reading a thread.

That said, I'm already lost without the DB to pore through!

When you buy a home with a condo association, you usually sign a contract agreeing to abide by the laws set by the association.

You are, of course, free to start and pay for your own board anywhere on the internet to discuss whatever pleases you. You'll pay, you'll make the rules. You'll attract sponsors and viewers who agree with your philosophy. It's business, plain and simple and unless you are paying the rent, you don't get to call the shots.

You can walk....we all can....but time and time again we all wander back here for whatever reason.

I also feel that when radio stations "ban" certain programs or DJs, it is also a form of censorship. It is their responsibility to the public to let us have all the "information".
That's because they are the media and as such they are bound by a Journalist's Code of Ethics. Objectivity is important to a journalist but not a message board.

Whether or not we choose to listen, is up to us. But, I think we should have the opportunity.
Truer words were never spoken. ::yes:: But that doesn't make it censorship. You could be banned from these boards and it still isn't censorship.

Just because the owners don't like something doesn't mean the public isn't entitled to it.
I wish some one would tell Rupert Murdoch.

It's not censorship any more than the fact that profanity is not allowed here is censorship. If Pete was refusing to allow you to start your OWN board, that would be censorship.

Look at everyoe playing nice good to see we wouldn't want to get closed down onhere to hehe J/K see we can debate on the CB without to many problems. So should I start another debate topic for tonight?

I think that if the administrators and mods are suddenly so uppity about the forum guidelines, they should take into consideration what they put in it:

We do not believe in censorship, and open discussions about various issues is encouraged.

Honestly, I don't understand the "it's not censorship" replies. It is clearly censorship. Certain types of posts will not be allowed because they don't fit within the content guidelines. That's pretty much defining censorship.

Now being a private entity, I'm not saying they don't have a right to censor these boards. That's up to them. They don't want a debate board, more power to 'em. But let's call a spade a spade.

Either way, it won't get rid of the debate. It'll just spread it around a bit. Just my two cents worth.

Have they said that is no longer the case? I just saw where they said they were no longer goign to provide a seperate room for it. You still have the rest of the forums. Of course, it will need to fit the topic of that particular forum.

I agree jrydberg so now we are having our debate forum over here onthe CB no big deal I am sure the CB regulars are not going to enjoy it but hey we have no other designated forum for it so here is as good as any.

See, now, I don't understand why someone thinks it would be. We are still, apparently, allowed to post debate-like things on the DIS. (Minus the insults.) We just don't have our own forum to do so anymore - so like you said, it'll just spread the debates out some. (And make the CB really hate us all.)

The reason given for getting rid of the board was that it does not further the main purpose of the forums, presumably, because the nature of the discussions did not.

Why would it be any different if we moved elsewhere? What would be the point of closing the board, then?

Well, I guess it's the part about the debate board not fitting in with what they had in mind that makes me see it as censorship. Doesn't sound like they'll be welcoming any old debate on other forums.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting things, but it sounds to me like most of the debates that took place over there aren't welcome anywhere else.

At the risk of having a "CB Regular" add to the debate (oh the horror, :scared1: be careful of flying pixie dust everyone ;) ) The DIS is not REQUIRED to provide ANYTHING to any of us. They had a Debate board, now they don't. Debate all you want anywhere else, as long as it fits into the board guidelines.

Hey, now they can debate the "how many in a studio?" debate til the cows come home over on the DVC board.

It's just change folks, no biggie really. I for one, will be glad to see some new faces around on different boards.

JMHO of course.

SOTM, if the DB had had any "open Discussions" about various topics, it would have still been open. The fact is, the DB hasn't been about debating since I started DISing. It was mainly name-calling and insults.

Disney Doll welcome to the world of debating onthe internet. Would you rather the name calling be there where you can choose not to go or have it pop up over here where you prefer to be simple choice really.
