Censorship yes or no

Well, I disagree with this! I debate on another site, and there is no name calling. I don't think that name calling is part of the "world of debating on the internet."

In a true debate there is no name calling. True debate is about presenting facts and well thought out opinions backed by facts. If someone disagreed with your opinion, you simply accepted that and stayed your course - no need to insult or trash the person who disagreed.

Name calling rarely (if ever) enters an informative and interesting debate.

I agree with Disney Doll.

Now being a private entity, I'm not saying they don't have a right to censor these boards. That's up to them.
jrydberg hit the nail on the head........ It IS a form of censorship, but the administrators have the RIGHT to censor their own board. They do not have an obligation to ensure that Debates take place on their board.

Although, I do hate to see the DB go.

Actually, I found that the name calling and insults were not particularly widespread and many of the debates did offer interesting tidbits of information that educated me about certain issues. The name calling and insults, of course, get all the attention. But if that's all it were, I wouldn't have come back.

The point is Dsny FN there is not going to be any name calling.

From the DIS Guidelines --
3. NO FIGHTING: Several Internet news groups are marred by the actions of a few selfish people who turn an otherwise positive forum into a soap box for their anger issues. Internet newsgroups are not moderated, and therefore, anything goes. These boards are moderated in an effort to keep the discussions appropriate to the topic at hand. Those who feel they can not abide by these rules are welcome to read the posts on the board, and respond via email to the person who posted the message. Messages that are argumentative or sarcastic in nature will be deleted without discussion.
Translation -- if you want to debate an issue on the DIS, keep it friendly, respectful, and without name calling.

(edited to add -- sorry, Alex, didn't realize you were posting at the same time)

I personally think that it was probably the name calling and insulting atmosphere that led to this closure. Would the DIS have closed a polite and respectful Debate Board that generated a lot of traffic and interest? I doubt it. But the Debate Board had evolved into a place where some of the regulars spent a lot of time bashing others who felt differently and few of the threads had any real debate IMO.

As for censorship, it's definitely censorship but the kind that any private business would practice.

Alex and Hagred you are right in a true debate there is no name calling but is there really such thing as a true debate look at the election with smear campains etc it is bound to happen. I found it was a select few that ever did this and itreally wasn't a big deal we are grownups and if it hurt their feelings then so be it get over it and move on to the next topic or stay off the DB. It is still censorship regardless of how you try to sugar coat it.

Yeah, but we're not talking about polical campaigns and smear tactics here. We're not even talking about debate tactics (although that was a nice sidestep you did. Congrats)

We're talking about Pete's board and how he chooses to run it. If you don't like what's on TV, change the channel. Don't scream at the TV set. There are lots of other boards out there to post your debates on. The DIS has chosen to refrain from these types of debates.

Period.

End of sentence.

Done.

Fini.

Instead of trying to break everyone else's toy out of spite because yours got taken away, just change the channel.

Exactly what was said to those that came to the DB hagred but they felt it was easier to take the TV away from us than it was for the others to change the channel so now we are using this channel like it or not we are here.

Ah, I see. You can only receive www.disboards.com on your computer. Now I understand why you're so upset.

I'd like to suggest that you invest some time and money to get your PC fixed or upgrade to one of the newer ones that will allow you to access all sorts of websites on the internet.

If that's not an option, perhaps getting cable TV and watching that would be a nice alternative to the DISboards? Unless, of course, you can only get one channel on that, too. In which case, I'm out of ideas for how you can spend your time.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

Why go elsewhere when everything you could ask for is on one site. I frequent many sites they all eitehr have something to do with Disney or Motorcycles and motorcycle racing. I would rather use my mind to talk to people and try and debate on a site than sit in front of my TV except for when CSI and CSI Miami are on and the hockey games.

Nope, there are always places you can find to debate things other boards that are designed for just that reason http://www.opendebate.com/
I never had a problem with the DB, I would go by and read a few things, but I always came by the Dis to chat with people not get into debates, if its what you came here for I didnt have a problem with it, but what goes on this board comes down to the decision of the person who runs it. If it was a public board run with tax dollars you could say censorship but in this case I dont think so just MHO.

Thanks for the opinion adcrbnsoul it is valued and everyone should be able to express theirs. I didn't come here expressly for the DB but it sure was a nice bonus that I used quite often.

Definitions of censorship:

noun: deleting parts of publications or correspondence or theatrical performances
noun: counterintelligence achieved by banning or deleting any information of value to the enemy

The CB has had several lighthearted "debates", It should stay that way or become more Disney oriented IMO:wave:

For a minute there I thought I was back on the debate board....

Yes but knight what you are saying happens all the time look at a condo corp if the corp votes on a design change wether you want it or not you pay for it to be done so it all conforms to the total look even though you may own it same thing here and Pete pays the bills with the help of the people that sponsor him both members of the boards and other private companies still a form of censorship.
Well, not quite. As legally defined, you DO own that property in a condo corp...that's what it is all about! The condo is owned by the members of the corp who are the condo owners...

So, the condo has property that is owned by the group of homeowners...that group (whether as a whole or an elected board) makes decisons for the common areas. The DIS does not have group-owned property....it is owned by one person...and he makes the rules.

I liked reading the DB time to time, but it's his decision. Call it censorship if you like, but the owner has every right to decide the content of his site.
