Celebrating my Un-Birthday Disney Style-April 2010-New 5/3 - The TR has started!

Hi Everyone!! I had one of those moments today, you all know them, a moment when you appreciate how special Disney is to you and your family.

It started earlier today when we went snow tubing!! There's a place not too far from us that has a BIG hill, with tow lines and everything, that offers snow tubing. For Christmas, my dad, who lives in Oregon, bought gift certificates for our family, my brother's family and my mom (which was really nice since they are divorced). Well we couldn't figure out a time to go with my brother so we went today with my mom. The actual tubing was a ton of fun, but we spent way more time waiting than riding down the hill. The ticket line was long, the tow lines were long, the lines to ride down the hill were long, the line to get hot chocolate was long & the line to return Zach’s safety helmet was long! We spent a lot of time waiting today! We had 3 hour tickets but only stayed about two hours. We went down the hill 3 times!! :headache: The kids really liked the tubing, but they had had enough of the waiting. And it was starting to take it’s toll on me & Tim as well.

Disclaimer: I don't like to talk about the Guest Assistance Card (GAC) a lot here because I worry about people (lurkers) who will take advantage of the accommodation and people who will think we are taking advantage of something. But I'm going to mention it here because it’s such an important part of why our Disney experience is magical. I'll also say that we do what we can to avoid crowds so we aren't taking advantage of the system... we use Tour Guide Mike to visit the least crowded parks, we arrive at rope drop whenever possible, we follow a touring plan (loosely if I let them), but without without the GAC we wouldn't be a Disney family and that would be a shame.

So back to dinner... We were talking about our tubing experience today and how we’d had fun, but that we weren’t anxious to go back very soon. Then the subject turned to Disney. I mentioned how experiencing something like tubing today makes me really appreciate the magic of Disney and how amazing Disney is for our family. Most families can enjoy the time waiting in line together and have fun just hanging out together, but for us it’s a nightmare. (Today Zachary just kept flopping himself on the ground and in the tubes and Alex kept kicking the tubes into other people and other irritating behavior.) Going to Disney allows us to just have fun together. Yes, there are moments that we are too tired, have been out in the sun too long, need a snack or meal, but waiting in lines doesn’t ruin a vacation for us. The GAC makes that possible for us. It’s not just the GAC and the fact that we can avoid very long lines & heavily congested areas, it’s the fact that we can enter through a FastPass queue like other average folks. There are other amusement parks that offer special accommodations for kids with disabilities, but that usually involves being put at the front of the line. It’s a great way to help kids with autism, but it’s also a great way to have people stare at you and whisper. For families like us, whose kids don’t outwardly appear to have a disability – unless you look for a while or have a special understanding of autism, it can be extremely awkward. I should probably just get over it, but that’s easier said than done…

While our outing today wasn’t an amazing experience in itself, it helped me (and Tim) appreciate why we love Disney and why we spend the money we do to go there. It gives us the opportunity to spend time together as a family – just having fun! :goodvibes

And thanks to all of you for providing me with a place to share my love of Disney!

********************************************************************************************************************

I also have a resource to share… during dinner Zach asked if he could watch the “Disney video”. I assumed he was talking about the Disney Planning DVD that had just come in the mail. We started to watch it the other day but hadn’t finished. Then he reminded me about a PowerPoint slideshow that I had found last year on a website called hiyah.net. If you go there, click on downloads, scroll down to Going Places you’ll see Going to Disney World. It’s kind of long, but it’s a photo slideshow that walks you through all of the Magic Kingdom - include some of the smaller details, like finger scanning. There are a few inaccuracies, like a picture from Tower of Terror during the section about The Haunted Mansion, but otherwise it’s a great resource for kids who need to know what to expect ahead of time. I was so surprised that Zach remembered it!! We watched it after dinner and he loved it. Whether you have kids on the spectrum or not, you should check it out.

Hmmm. Sounds like a fun (but frustrating) day!

Thank goodness that Disney helps our kids navigate the parks with a little less stress!

Sorry you didn't get to go down the hill more. I know exactly what you mean about how Disney makes things special. A lot of times people talk at Bill not to him because of the wheelchair, the speech impediment, and how he holds his right arm out sometimes. The CM's make sure to speak directly to him and that just makes him so happy. Having wheelchair accessible rides makes him so much more independent and that is why we spend out money there. They make things wonderful for us to (I am getting all teary eyed just typing this :sad1:).

I am so happy Disney makes it where your family can just relax and have a great time!

I hear you Amy!! I wear glasses also & I am always taking them off & putting on my prescription sunglasses!! It is a pain!!

Yes - prescription glasses are a pain, but not as bad as contacts. I've tried so many different kinds of contact lenses and never have any luck. I think my eyes just get too dry! :headache:

Yay for 3 months!!

Have either of you thought of or tried transitions lenses. They are clear inside and outside in the sunlight go dark just like sunglasses and you don't have to carry around multiple pairs of glasses with you.

You know we all totally understand your appreciation of WDW and its magic. :thumbsup2

We've been wanting to try snow tubing at some point, but I wonder sometimes how we'd enjoy it. And your story doesn't make me anxious to try! ;)

I really loved your post. We are very new to autism and I'm still learning so much. Disney is the best!

No I have not tried the transition lenses but it may be something to look into. I just got new lenses last year so it may be a while but will check into. Thanks!!

I am reminded of the daily challenges you face as a parent of a child with Autism.

I :worship::worship::worship: to you.

Do you think Disney trains people to act that way or do you think they just hire the best? I doubt hiring the best could do that alone... I bet it's a combination of the two. But it makes you wonder why they can't teach people to act that way all the time... Disney Maigic should be a requirement for high school graduation!

Hi EYDF!! Glad to see you are still following along!

You know, I haven't tried them... I always get this awful memory of my high school social studies teacher who wore transitions lenses that always seemed too dark. I know things have changed quite a bit because my mother wears them now & loves them. I'll have to consider it next time I'm in the market for lenses.

Thanks for sharing that Amy. WDW is special to all of us for so many reasons...thanks for sharing yours! :goodvibes

I guess I was just feeling mooshy yesterday. ;) I'm always happy when Tim can get an understanding of why we all love it so much. I mean, he's there with us of course, but I don't think he truly appreciates it as much as me.

You know we all totally understand your appreciation of WDW and its magic. :thumbsup2

Don't give up on tubing just from my report. We probably chose one of the busiest days to go - it was really nice here yesterday & we didn't make "rope drop". :rotfl: We probably should have gone after school on a week day. :confused3

I really loved your post. We are very new to autism and I'm still learning so much. Disney is the best!

Disney IS the best!! I know so many families living with autism & most of them love Disney! The rest of them haven't been. A lot of them go every year. ::yes::

I am reminded of the daily challenges you face as a parent of a child with Autism.

I :worship::worship::worship: to you.

You're the best Jordan! :goodvibes

I'm glad I only have to worry about me....I have trouble taking care of myself much less someone else...;)

Well...it took me a couple days but I think I have finally caught up.:goodvibes

Yay! for having a day where you can celebrate just you!:thumbsup2 Especially when you can do it at Disney--even better!!! I'm so glad that they extended the "What are you Celebrating" promotion this year!!:)

Your itinerary/ADR's look great! We've never tried Boma for dinner before only breakfast but I have heard lots of great things. I know that we loved breakfast!! There was lots of variety...and the food was yummy!!;)

Hmm....we are still not sure which water park we want to go to either.:confused3 Although, we are leaning a little bit more towards Typhoon Lagoon right now.

Thank you for sharing why Disney is so special to your family!:goodvibes It really is such a wonderful place!!!!:lovestruc

I'm excited to try Boma! I think it will be a good place for a big group.

I'm leaning toward TL as well - those stairs at BB make me nervous... and I know the kids will want to ride the chair lift but those lines will probably be very long.

Thanks for taking the time to read through my long PTR!

First off... Good News! Looks like Zach is alredy 48 inches tall - without shoes!! With his crocs he's almost 49 inches! He claims he wants to ride Rock 'n' Rollercoaster! We'll see...

Moving on to my next update on Epcot. Time to look back to 2007 & 2008!

Ok - so in all honesty - there aren't any 2007 Epcot pictures to look back upon! :headache: We spent very little time at Epcot that year. We didn’t even step foot in the World Showcase! The few hours we spent in FutureWorld were very hot & a little crazy. We were with Jeff & his family and I remember Test Track being up & down – mostly down! Anyways… on to better things – Epcot 2008! This was during my very rainy trip with my mom. This was our last day and the rain finally passed!

Finally, sun in 2008 during the F&G Festival: (Sorry for the giant pictures.)

Up next: Epcot - Looking back to 2009!

I always enjoy seeing your photos from past trips. Is this the third trip you will be taking during the Flower and Garden Festival? If you ever visit Epcot when it's not decorated with all those gorgeous flowers, you might not recognize it. :goodvibes

I feel like I'll be disappointed to see a "plain" Epcot in the future. And it looks like April won't be a good option for us next year since our vacation falls the week after Easter next year. Oh well... Maybe we'll have to pick a holiday to visit so we can see holiday decorations... :confused3

My husband will think I'm nuts if I ever have a DISmeet, but we should compare our touring plans as it gets closer, maybe we can "accidentally" run into each other. ;)

I think it would be cool to plan an "accident"...he he he...

Awesome that Zach hit the 48" mark!! YEAH! I always measure without shoes too, that way I pretty much know for sure that we will make the mark with shoes!! Looking back at some of your pictures, I hope this trip to enjoy so many of the "extra" performers in the World Showcase, they are always so neat to watch!! My list of "new things" keeps on growing by the day!!

Yes - Let's try to bump into each other! :thumbsup2

Guess what? I'm in the 80s today!!:banana:

We skipped WS during our first trip to Disney too. Just one of those things! I always vow to spend more time exploring that section of the park. I really like that picture of you and your mom. :) Yay for Zach making height!

I'm just noticing your ticker! Is it new? I think I'm a bit behind on your TR so maybe you mentioned it over there... You will love Halloween at Disney & CBR - we've done both in two different years. :thumbsup2

Last year we spent some time in the WS and we now have some favorites that we need to go back and revisit - plus we have some new things on our list!
