CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Did you read what I wrote? More variants can affect the vaccinated people. Available vaccines might not cover the new variants. Unless you want to get new vaccines every month to cover the new variants!

Time to move away from this thread! :(

See, you're making an argument for infinity now- there will be other new variants in the future and they can always be used as a reason not to reopen.

Certainly possible we will need boosters in a year or two but these vaccines will almost certainly prevent almost all hospitalization and death for some time. You cannot allow the doom and gloom of the media to keep people locked down any longer. Look at the UK and US where vax is going amazingly well and the numbers don't lie.

Yeah but at this point the goal is to stop spread again, due to the variants, not just lower the burden on hospitals and the numbers dead.

The more the virus can jump around in people, the more likely mutations develop.

In a way, we are back to the same place we were last year at this time. The goal RIGHT NOW is again, "stop the spread." But this time, it DOES have an end date which is literally until we get most adults vaccinated. So yeah, we need to hold on *just* a few more months, or else all the effort we have put in so far is wasted.

Partying over spring break like nothing ever happened is irresponsible right now.

We're not remotely where we were a year ago. Today, those young people will not bring the virus home and sicken/kill their parents and grandparents.

If older people are largely vaccinated and hospitals are virtually empty and we have treatment options for younger cases, I don't see the argument for waiting anymore. Depression, isolation, and the job status of lower paid service industry workers now (or a month and a half from now) outweighs the health risks.

That's fair, but right now, there's no argument that the numbers are even rising here.

No, they aren't, but that is largely due to the psychological effect of people having self regulated their behaviors after what happened over the holidays. The surges (all of them so far) have a dampening effect on people's behavior, even subconsciously. People become more cautious during surges, so they lay low for awhile. Then, as numbers come down, confidence returns and people go "balls to the wall" again, and then shortly thereafter, numbers creep up again. I'm sure it will happen again in a few weeks, although I suspect it will be a bunny hill rather than a mountain this time.

I don't believe the predictions of doom and gloom, but I do think we will see a flattening of the numbers or a modest increase towards mid April.

I would love to be wrong, because I need DISNEYLAND TO OPEN!

It's not impossible we are flattening or could rise again do to spring break and letting our guard down- but again, we now have 65% of the older population vaccinated and many more of them with natural immunity.

That’s not what was said. I am all for healthy debate here, but that doesn’t work when you continually take things out of context or double down to try to make a point. What’s been said is very clear - give it the two months, you yourself have said will get everybody vaccinated, before planning huge, full capacity indoor gatherings. It’s really not a hard concept and one that common sense says is smart. We are so close to the “finish line” that blowing it on the last turn is a stupid move.

So you're good waiting two months and then opening it up to events like this?

There is a difference in locked down and wide open. UFC isn’t going to go under if they have to wait 2-3 more months to do a 100% capacity event, nor if they had to do one now at 50%.

First, you don't know that to be true. Second, it's more about for me the people who will have work that night at the venue- the bars and restaurants that will be able to stay open and have their employees earning money that night.

Would I personally go? No. Do I think it’s a smarter health decision to wait until their target audience can get vaccinated? Absolutely.

If I had my choice, no, there wouldn’t be 100% capacity indoor events in 2 months. But it would at least be smarter to do then as opposed to now. And it would be harder to argue it’s a stupid health decision. Right now, it is.

Okay. So, this event is in a month and a half.
