There is likely to be only this event taking place under these circumstances prior to May, the impact of this one event 6 weeks from now is likely to be largely overstated. Masks are required FWIW.

Ok...the WWE outside even with all of those precautions in place makes complete sense. Wrestle on....or Fake Wrestle on... ;).
Obviously off topic for this thread but this was one of the things I grew up watching (no judging lol) but as a kid I did not realize all the stuff that goes into making it look the way it does. My dad didn't care about us watching WWE or Jerry Springer

UFC and MMA (in general) are totally different though. That stuff can be nuts!

It's not impossible we are flattening or could rise again do to spring break and letting our guard down- but again, we now have 65% of the older population vaccinated and many more of them with natural immunity.
Respectively, you don't seem to understand the science behind new variants and vaccination. You keep saying how many people have been vaccinated; 65% of the older population vaccinated means nothing if you have new variants. Just because our vaccines cover the UK variant doesn't mean we have coverage for others. Herd immunity occurs if most people are vaccinated and no more variants are created by unvaccinated people going around getting Covid with new variants. We are close to the finish line. We want most people in the world (not just the US) to get vaccinated to prevent more variants entering the US. Hope is to get most Americans vaccinated by June to get to the point that no more variants are created.

The vaccines work on the variants. Also...means NOTHING??? Come on.

Moderna:
  • "will enroll approximately 6,750 children in the US and Canada between the ages of 6 months and 11 years old."
  • "The trial is broken into two parts.
    • In part one, different dosages of the vaccine are being tested on the children. Children between the ages of 6 months and 1 year old will receive two doses of the vaccine spaced about 28 days apart at either a 25 or a 50 or a 100 microgram level. Children between the ages of 2 and 11 will receive two doses of the vaccine spaced about 28 days apart at either a 50 or a 100 microgram level. The findings of part one will be used to determine which dose will be used in part two.
    • For part two, the trial will expand to include children who are given a saline placebo, which does nothing. The children will be followed for 12 months after their second injection."

The vaccinated can contract the new variants as well. Not just unvaccinated.

In the rare cases the vaccinated contract any variants they are still shown to be 100% effective against death. Remember the media clamoring about Tampa during the Super Bowl? Tens of thousands of maskless all over the city for two weeks? Cases have plummeted in Tampa since.

Look at cases in South Africa, the media hypes the hell out of that variant but cases there have basically disappeared with no vaccinations.

Yeah, I think the media is doing its best to hype up the variants to keep us all controlled in fear again. The fact is that there are hundreds of variants and there generally isn't much to worry about. If the virus mutates so far away from the vaccines then it really isn't COVID-19 anymore but a different virus. I don't think we need to worry about this as much as people are trying to get us to.

I do think we need a measured approach to reopening and I see as little thought in that across the US as I did with the lockdowns. Ultimately at this point everyone just needs to take responsibility for themselves and if you are not comfortable with an activity then don't do it. We have to stop relying on the government to take care of us...

Deja Vu of this time last year. Lock down in Italy. Spring break crowds in Florida. Refusing to wear masks. I wonder what the outcome would be.
Amazing how little people understand science, even though they think they do!!
It is simple. More unvaccinated people gathering ---} more variants of the same virus ---} less effectiveness of the vaccine that we think a lot of people are getting in the US ---} oops, cases are going up again!! Hope I am wrong, but for God's sake 550K people have died and we still have people who deny that this thing is real! If we could just sit still for a few months until more people are vaccinated, we can control this, but no, our freedom to party is more important.
We are not where we were a year ago.

Over 20% have received their first vaccine. At least 10% have had COVID. (Likely more, but I’m being conservative). So at a minimum, roughly 30% of our population has some level of immunity.

The vaccines ARE working against the variants.

Eli Lily’s treatment cuts hospitalization and deaths by something like 80% in high risk patients.

The bolded shows an alarming misunderstanding of both viral mutations and vaccine science understanding. Wow.

It’s a no from me.

Ummm, no... I have a biology degree so I understand viruses & basic biology. It is alarming how the media has made people think they understand everything.

A biology degree doesn't make you an expert virologist. I prefer to listen to what those people have to say about mutations and vaccines. I don't get my information from "the media." I follow and listen to actual scientists and read journal articles and published studies.

The current worrisome mutations have changes that affect how easily the virus attaches to cells, and the SA strain, specifically, has a mutation that makes it less susceptible to the normal immune response. Neither of those mutations makes the virus a different one, nor do they mean the current vaccines are as effective.

I wonder how difficult scheduling 16-17 year olds will be since they can only get Pfizer at this time.

In our area the Pfizer vaccine is the most prominent one. Our state has almost no J&J and Moderna isn't as widely available either. I'm sure it varies by state, but it seems most supply at this time is Pfizer, so it shouldn't be too difficult. The pharmacies (via the Federal Retail Pharmacy partnership program) scheduling systems show you which vaccine is available at each location.

I guess we can sit still forever.
I hate this thinking, and you are intelligent to know that is not what they meant. If someone says“Hmm, maybe we shouldn’t have huge parties and mass events for a few more weeks to allow for more people to be vaccinated“ it turns into “Well do you expect us to lock ourselves in the house forever?” That’s not what they said. That’s turning what they said into an extreme...kind of like the click bait headlines that are railed against here.
