That’s a good way to put it. It absolutely won’t be real to some people unless they start seeing certain people getting extremely sick or dying. It’s really unfortunate.

I’ve heard that and it’s beyond tragic. People can be skeptical all they want of raw case numbers, but how they can ignore doctors and nurses screaming for help and stories like this I will never understand.

I've read comments where people say these doctors and nurses are all actors and in on the scam. It reminds me of when conspiracy theorists tried to claim the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax and that all of those kids/parents/teachers were actors too and that nobody really died. It boggles my mind how people fall for these crazy theories.

It gets overwhelming to think about but all I can do is get my vaccine as a way of protecting myself. I don't mean that to sound selfish.

Getting vaccinated isn't selfish. It's protecting you and your neighbors.
Greatly reducing spread is the only way we get moving on the road to normal life.

In Tennessee they have set up a website/page where you can go put your county, answer some questions and it will tell you what phase you will be in and then you can give them your phone/email and they are supposed to contact you when your phase starts. My mom is 1b and that isn't even supposed to start until Feb/March and I am 1C which is 2nd qtr. We'll see if it actually works.

My parents got their first round of Moderna in Orange County, Fl today. My dad is very cynical of a lot of things but he was surprised at how well the whole process went. They made their appointments online (both rounds at the same time), it was a drive thru system and despite the vast number of people, were in line less than a half hour.

In addition to everything @Jonfw2 said above, another thing I've heard from some of the health care workers I know personally is that they've already had covid and the evidence suggests that they have natural immunity of some not-insignificant duration, so they are passing on the vaccine until supplies are more adequate. Which is an angle I hadn't thought of, because I also know some health care workers who are straight-up anti-vaxxers and I assumed that most who are refusing the vaccine are in that group, but it does make a sort of sense given how widespread covid has been among frontline workers and how other-centered those who choose caring careers can be.
I agree with this. And I’ll add that I know it’s hard to understand unless you’ve been there, but doctors and nurses who have been on the front lines of this full time in hospitals since last spring have little left to give. They’re running on empty. What is required of them in some cases already stretches what they can reasonably endure. For some, it might be the last little bit of control they get to exercise when they’ve had little to no control in a lot of things in their personal and professional lives for the past 11 months or so. Again, I know it’s hard to understand. But this is some of what I see. Some will come around and get it later - when they’re off for a while. Some may have already had Covid. Some have fears, as well - they may be the sole breadwinner and insurance carrier and can’t afford to be down, knowing they may not be supported in being out. Of course, getting Covid would do that, too. But if they’ve been working with Covid patients all this time, chances are good they have a very good handle on protecting themselves, and do so on the outside, as well. City hospitals also do have a high minority employment. We won’t know how it breaks down unless we see numbers of who got vaccinated, and who didn’t. Those are probably still being evaluated.

Just read that Biden plans to release all available vaccine doses rather than holding back second doses for people. This will allow more people to get vaccinated faster. Apparently they are confident in the amount of doses that will be delivered going forward.

Also plans to set up federal vaccine centers and give states more funding support for their own efforts.

Here in MA they are planning to use Fenway Park, Gillette Stadium and a large fairground in western MA for large scale first responder vaccination beginning next week. I am hoping they keep utilizing those kinds of spaces as we move to general population vaccination as well. It is silly but I think the novelty of getting vaccinated at Fenway might actually motivate some people to get the vaccine - it was used as a poll location for the last election and the novelty of saying “I voted at Fenway” definitely motivated people to vote. The large spaces also help with being able to have large numbers of people stream through in a day - certainly more than at smaller medical centers or already overwhelmed hospitals.

I think it's great to use these large spaces like that. A city in my state plans to do that. Our NFL stadium (located on the other side of the state line) was used as a polling location too, don't see why it couldn't be used for this purpose too. They have the parking to do it too.

wow. what a great way to utilize these large spaces for the vaccination efforts.

Also helps that the Patriots aren’t in the playoffs so they don’t have to worry about sharing the space with the team. Sorry, couldn’t resist.

I had a patient tell me today they didn't trust the Pfizer vaccine only because they didn't trust the fact that it needed the extreme refridgeration and short expiration time out of the freezer - i.e. she didn't trust everyone along that route to get it right. She had no issues with the Moderna.

I can't say she didn't have a point. It wouldn't have stopped me from getting it. I guess it's a bit like trusting that guy that rigs your harness before zip lining. At some point you need to trust, with your life, that people know how to do their job.

Good.
Right now about 4,000 people a day are being killed by Covid.
If we continue to wait to vaccinate the public, the projections are 5,000 a day (or more) in Feb.

It’s a gamble that they will be able to produce enough vaccines to go around. If they don’t, and there are a vast majority of people who only have the first shot, it may be problematic.

I stopped listening to projections months ago. They have absolutely no idea. It’s just guessing.

Personally, I was horrified
hearing about the projected 4000 a day. And here we are.

Yeah the only thing these days I listen to on that is when they talk about a place not normally used for this purpose or a drive-thru clinic or a facility in so much on how many they could handle theoretically people per day..but the projections on doses are much like the projections on tests..I would see news stories about how many tests they hope to do in my state or area per day. Just got to the point where it was always all over the place and changing.

I have been hearing this soooooooo much. My neighbor is very skeptical. She keeps saying, "what if the vaccine gets above temp during transit? Nobody would know it is completely ineffective." I have heard that many many times. I have also heard concerns about the short time the person has to get the vaccine in your arm once it's out of the freezer. At one point I thought they talked about having some sort of strip on the outside on the vaccine box that would change color if it went above temp so they would know if it was spoiled. I don't think that happened though. I guess it's a huge concern.

If it was left out too long, wouldn’t that just make it useless and not harmful?

The 7 day average for the past week is 2,657. The data is jumbled from the holidays. Give it a few weeks to stabilize.
