CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

Without going through all the posts, why do people think many in healthcare/medical personnel aren't getting the shot? I think there is always the assumption that the conspiracy group/deniers are foolish or not educated, so why are so many in the medical field not getting the vaccine?
It’s very hard to answer this question on a forum like Disboards as it will quickly devolve into a political or racial discussion that is not allowed here. I worked in the business office of 3 nursing homes on Long Island in the past and I can guarantee a large majority of the CNA’s, recreation, and social work assistant staff won’t be getting the vaccine due to their beliefs. It’s very unfortunate but with it not required by facilities, plenty of staff will opt out.

My oldest is a PTA in a healthcare and rehab center. The facility was finally scheduled for the vaccine this week. Unfortunately a little over 2 weeks ago they had their first case of COVID hit. Resident cases are rising rapidly, and the healthcare workers are also being impacted. They are now up to at least a dozen residents/healthcare providers who have tested positive. DD was to get her vaccine yesterday but is now on a wait to see if she has COVID, as she has some symptoms and was recently working with 2 of the residents who have since tested positive.

Now my SIL works for a hospital in the business office. They are in a separate building from the hospital and she doesn't come into contact with any patients or medical personnel but has already had the vaccine, she was in the last group. Started there about 3 weeks ago. She hesitated and knows people who opted out. Wish the vaccine could be distributed to those who want it, and are most vulnerable.

Three things:

1. Many nursing home staff are minorities and there is a wariness in minority communities about these vaccines.
2. Some younger people in general seem to be saying "I'd rather get Covid than get vaccinated".
3. From my CVS/Walgreen's article above, they noted that some nursing facilities have asked that their employees be vaccinated on a staggered schedule so if people have side effects, they're not missing work all at the same time.

Because, as it turns out, we're not really "all in this together".

This is pretty common in the hospitals too. They don't want to take all their staff out at once so they've been employing staggered schedule to give days off for side effects and all.

You answered that in much plainer speak than I tried to and did an excellent job. But yes, point #1 was what I was alluding to in my post. :)

I touched on this earlier in this thread (I believe it was this thread). We tend to forget that healthcare people are individuals too with their own thoughts and opinions whether we agree with them or not. We just see them for their occupations. Not really an excuse just kinda laying that out there.

Sad.
If some are motivated by refrigerator trucks of bodies and others by cold hard cash...as long as they are lining up to vaccinate it helps either way.
The cash part is interesting like I mentioned. While it's not the same thing we often give financial incentives to people (be it cash or gift cards) to donate blood, plasma and platelets. Of course many donate those things in an altruistic way but many also do it because the cash or gift card.

My husband used to get a t shirt when he donated blood in New Orleans. His blood type was in big demand so we received regular calls for him to come back in. He had the coolest t-shirts during that era. Very tongue in cheek styles.

Well, I wasn't really referencing the nursing home. They don't have any minority staff members, and no one has even been able to get the vaccine until this week; too late for many already.

I was interested in the hospital personnel. My SIL who hesitated for the shot did so after speaking to a Dr she knows who is not doing so just yet. ?? She also knows a few nurses who have opted out at this time as well.

There needs to be some sort of stand-by system so the shots can get distributed ASAP if those at the front of the line opt out. Only about 30% of AVAILABLE shots have been administered nation-wide. I know that's not all because of people opting out, but every little bit we can do to accelerate the vaccine rollout will help.

Unfortunately, science and medicine is sometimes tossed aside in favor of the latest conspiracy theory.
My community has a relatively large number of epidemiologists and other educators who have worked hard to share data and inform.
Other places in the US are not as fortunate.

This is why I gave you multiple answers and not just one.

It’s still about 60% for and 40% waiting/against at my facility (acute rehab with cardio/pulm rehab and a COVID unit).

That’s all I’m really willing to say because this discussion (not just here on the DIS, but everywhere) is exhausting to me, but I thought others would be interested in how it’s playing out among some healthcare workers.

According to OWS today, this is exactly what's being worked on now.

While I personally would not opt out, I believe there are ani-vaxxers in every profession, including the medical profession.

Aww that's sweet and I like the humor with it!

My husband gets a lot of mail from the local Community Blood Center, he's donated multiple times over time that's why they contact him. Right now they want his platelets (the last 3 postcards have called out that) but they announced they are going to screen every donation if done through their centers and certain blood drives for COVID antibodies so I told him (as he's interested in seeing if he had any) he should call and ask blood vs platelets in terms of that not only that but they've been promoting that if you do have the antibodies they may want plasma donations). He could give blood now and then do platelets later. Either way I told him to call..will he? IDK  They do most of the time offer rewards, they have their own rewards program sort of thing. I think we've gotten Home Depot and Amazon gift cards IIRC.

These are very challenging times for folks who provide heath care. Many thanks for all you do!
