Cashing in my jar of change

coinstar charges 8%. suntrust in fl will count a handful or so for no charge but will charge 3% for a jarful even if you have an account. our credit union will take small amounts in a mixed deposit or anything that is rolled for no charge.

I roll my own when I watch TV but I only roll maybe 2-3 rolls every few years. All of the banks I bank with around here (BB&T and a credit union) don't charge for rolled coin. You just have to write your account number on it and bring it inside, not through the drive-thru. I always try to give exact change when buying stuff so I don't have an abundance of coin and get to keep more dollar bills.

I used to be a bank teller and I'll never forget this one guy. He was always a bit of a jerk and arrogant, complaining all the time about how he was always the victim in every situation. One day he came in and he had received some kind of ticket (can't remember if it was parking, speeding, or what) but it was for $80. He came to the bank and wanted $80 in pennies. We give him the $80 in pennies and he unrolls them in the bank and puts them in a bag, all the while declaring he was sticking it to the "man", laughing to himself because he thought he was so clever. About 2 hours later he comes back fuming that they wouldn't take the pennies. He then had to re-roll $80 in pennies, all the while complaining that we wouldn't take them back unrolled.

I seem to remember our local Credit Union having a machine. It's been a few years (DH and I were newlyweds) and we took some change in.

Personally, I kind of enjoy rolling change. I don't know why, but I just like it. DH thinks that I'm nuts! :)

We have a milk jug that we're putting change in now. We'll take it in when it's full (it's about 1/3 of the way there now) and I think it will go towards our vacation fund. I'm curious to find out how much you end up with! :)

I have no idea where I would cash it in around here other than coinstar. I have done coinstar before and gotten an Amazon gift card......but I prefer not to have to do that.

Dawn

BB&T's around here have coin counters in the lobby. You don't need to have an account with them (although we do) - the machine prints out a receipt and you take it to the teller - no charge.

i roll them myself and bring to my local bank, no fees
i actually like rolling them, i find it threaputic

Just an fyi---as of November 1, 2010, TD Bank now charges non account holders 6% to cash in their change!

All of our change goes to pay for the fun "extras" for our Disney Trips. We usually have several hundred $$ for each trip. We do put bills in there from time to time (like on the rare occasion that I post something on CL). It's really fun to see how much we have. Our bank does not charge to count it.

Wow, in IL, I've never had a bank charge me. But then, I live out in the sticks and it's a "local" bank. My DH just got a job at a bank out here and I just make him do it now. It's like having a personal teller. ;)

I wish I could roll mine! I have a ton of wrappers from our pre-credit union days! Still think I need to look around and find another bank and just put vacation $ in it! LOL!

Hmmm, you must've met one of my ex-boyfriends :rolleyes1 I dated a guy that had some sort of school fine in high school, he was told if he didn't pay it he wouldn't graduate. He thought he was SO clever to bring in the amount in a bag of pennies. He was so sure that it was terribly clever that he was STILL talking about it when I dated him (and he was 5 years out of HS at that point ) Come to think of it, that probably should have been the first red flag.

I agree with a PP, I can't believe there is a financial institution that refuses any and all transactions with change. I would be finding a new bank/credit union.

To the OP, I roll my own. I have used Coinstar once, to get an Overstock GC. Even then I counted it before I took it so I knew how much to expect. I refuse to do it for cash back - they charge 9% for that and I think that is ridiculous!

The $80 story reminded me of my brother's job in high school. He did some sort of internship (in HS? I know, weird, but I don't think it was a job-job) at a bank, and at that particular bank, in around '89, in Miami, they took ANY money. And they would roll the coins. They liked to have him do it, LOL. He said it was just so gross, and of course in Miami in the '80s, who wanted to touch ANY money? You just knew it was disgusting and full of things you had no interest in touching...

I too like to count and roll my change. It's rewarding to see how much you can collect over time. I guess I want to make sure that I get all of my own money rather than losing some to CoinStar. Plus it's a god way to illustrate that saving your change really adds up $$.

I can't believe that any bank would charge to exchange money for money, especially if you bank there and pay bank fees? I think I would be upset if my bank tried to charge me to exchange rolled coins for paper, especially since I pay $9/month to bank with them, and I do 99.9% of all of my transactions online. I actually don't remember the last time I went into the bank to do a transaction, but I do exchange coins once a year, and have never been charged a fee.

I roll my silver money and take the pennies to Coinstar. I figure 9% of pennies is something I'm willing to pay, but definitely not 9% of quarters (since it would take me the same amt of time to roll pennies - I figure I get "paid" .90 to roll my own quarters but only .045 to roll my own pennies).

How common is a bank fee where you are? I would never use a bank that charges me "membership"!

The Coinstars by me give out an Amazon Gift Certificate at no fee. So drop in your $100 in change and get a $100 Amazon gift certificate. I think there are a few other vendors that offer the same no fee gift certificate deal. It's how I bought my PSP and my Kindle.

Wow--I bank at a local credit union. They take my coins and count them for no charge. They do not want them rolled as they go in the machine in the back. The first time I rolled them all, only to unroll them again at the bank so they could be counted. And I pay no fees! All that is required is that I keep a minimum of $5 in my savings account. I can handle that! ;)

We just take ours to the bank in a pillowcase and they take it to the change counter and count it. It sorts, so we don't even have to do that. If you take in rolled coins, they unroll them, so we stopped rolling them. Easy Peasy!
