Can't handle the teacups...Mission Space possible?

I am fine on rides that drop, but spinning makes me sick. Rides like the teacups and the Tilt-a-Whirl are like cruel and unusual punishment for me. I really want to go on Mission Space, but I've heard a number of different reviews. Some people didn't get dizzy at all, some got a little disoriented, and some lost their lunch in a matter of minutes.

If I can't handle the teacups, will Mission Space do me in completely? I take Bonine for motion sickness and that helps with every ride I've been on. Will it help?

Did you close your eyes or look side to side? I heard you aren't supposed to do anything but look straight ahead. I'm worried that I'll concentrate too much on where I'm looking and I'll miss the whole ride. Or I won't concentrate enough.

Did you throw up? Did it ruin the rest of your day?

I am totally opposite. My DD loves to spin those teacups. I ride with her and I am a bit dizzy after, but not incapacitated.

For me, M:S was really intense and let me explain that. I knew that this was a spinning ride. They warn you up front...TOO much in my opinion...it sure got annoying. But I felt the g-forces more, I felt what you probably think is a dropping sensation.

I came out feeling like I had a minior face lift in my cheeks...not pain, not disoriented and definitely not dizzy like the teacups. My cheeks just felt firm. I did feel a little odd coming out of the ride, but not different than any other intense ride that I have been on. And let me say I am NOT a thrill ride seeker.

Honestly, I thought I might feel nauseous, but I prepared myself as I can force myself to have a pretty iron stomach if necessary. I don't think I needed to prep myself that much. I think I may have even psyched myself out if you know what I mean.

I think you should try it. The experience is definitely worth having and I highly doubt that if people were getting sick all over the place, that it would have lines as long as it does.

I hate anything that spins - even Astro Orbiter makes me goofy, Teacups aren't even an option - but I was fine on Mission:Space. You can't even tell that you're actually spinning. It's an entirely different sensation and very fun!

I second the felt more like a dropping sensation than spinning

thanks

We just got back from WDW. My dh can't handle the teacups either. He was hesitant about going on Mission Space. We SHOULDN'T have gone on it!! He was sick and the rest of our part of WDW before we went on the cruise he wasn't well. He was messed up for days.
I didn't like the feeling it gave me either. My 15 yr old dd wouldn't go on it again either.

Just NOT a ride for us! As far as spinning, I didn't know we were.

Good luck!

Laura

I really don't think you feel like you are spinning. It is a totally different experience than tea cups or Tilt-a-Whirl. The capsule you are seated in doesn't spin but it does go around in a big circle - the best image I can give is to picture a ferris wheel turned on its side. You are on the rim of the wheel and the wheel is turning, but the car you are seated in isn't spinning on its own. I hope that makes sense.

Also, what disorients most people on a ride like tea cups is looking out and seeing the world spinning past. On M:S you are enclosed in a capsule so you have no point of reference to judge your position. That makes the sensation of movement very mild.

Personally, as I've said in previous posts, I think Disney has gone wrong in advertising this ride. They make it seem much more intense than it actually is. The commercial showing people screaming wildly on the ride just isn't realistic at all. Unfortunately, I think a lot of guests who would really enjoy the show are being scared away.

here is yet another differing view...i can't handle the tea cups or anything that spins me but i had no problem what so ever on mission space...if you follow the directions that you are given and place your head back in the seat you will not even feel like you are spinning...ymmv....
good luck and have a great time!!!!

I get nauseous even on the Carousel, so I was VERY worried about M:S, so much so that I was calling it Motion:Sickness before our trip ;) But I decided that I would regret it if I didn't try it, and that there is no shame in puking.

The only time I got dizzy was for a few brief seconds during the 'weightless' portion of the ride, and even then I just picked a star out the window to focus on and I was fine. I did feel a bit lightheaded and headachy afterwards, and it is not the sort of ride I could do over and over and over again (like my DH does, and did as a matter of fact). Once a day is enough for me, but I am glad I did. It is truly a unique ride and experience, and I can't wait for our next trip to do it again!

I can't do circles...tea cups, etc... I can't even watch things going in circles...but I rode Mission Space and loved it. No sickness. Just be sure to look straight ahead and keep your eyes open. You should be fine. I also screamed like a banshee <sp?>! It was a blast! I highly recommend trying it at least once.

I am someone who can no longer do teacups or Tilt-a-whirls (and they used to be my favorite!), but I was fine on M:S. I would encourage you to try it once. I loved the G force sensation during lift-off. I know that's the closest I'll ever come to space travel, and it was fun.

I do like thrill rides just for a frame of reference.

Impression De France made me feel funnier than mission space. I cannot do star tours or body wars.

I can no longer do the "round - up" fair type ride, makes me feel sick now even though I loved it as a child. I was a bit worried about riding Mission Space. I did just what they tell you, don't close your eyes, head back, look straight ahead. I felt fine, not queasy at all. Great experience, my DS6 enjoyed it as well.

I agree with disneysteve. I think this ride was too hyped up. It was fine. Then again, i did everything they said to do. I looked straight ahead, kept my eyes open, and kept my head back.
maybe next trip, just for kicks, i'll close my eyes, look left and right, and throw my head sideways.

I did everything right on Mission: Space. Head back. Don't look side to side. I was fine all the way through the ride (I was the engineer, woohoo!). All the way until...

The ride stopped. I was a little woozy getting out of the ride and into the gift shop, things seemed better. Outside into the real world, not so good. Not for about 20 minutes did I feel better.

Strange, I've never reacted to a ride this way before. I only went once (Thanksgiving lines were long, fastpasses for the day were gone before noon and the singles line took as long or longer than the group line). I'd almost like to go again, just to see if the second time would affect me the same way.

Unfortunately, this was the main EPCOT trip and I don't know if we'll get back to M:S at all in February (which will be golf and MK).

the infamous Teacups but loved Mission:Space. Do what they tell you...ALWAYS look straight ahead and NEVER look around. I felt a little light-headed after our second time (yes, did it twice back to back) and continued to feel that way for about a half and hour. After that, back to normal. I thought the hype was a bit much after riding it but did see some folks having to sit down afterwards.

I admit that I was a little nervous about this ride. I hear some people hurl, some are fine, some are a little off for a bit then are fine. I ask a cast member how it compares to Rock & Roller Coaster. They can’t tell me. So I put on the brave face and went in.

There are a TON of signs that tell you the ride spins. It tells you that you can get sick. I want to trust Mickey but I am having second thoughts. They take you into the launch prep area. The monitor turns on and who is it but Gary Sinise! Now if Lieutenant Dan is telling you things are going to be OK, you have to believe Lieutenant Dan.

We are boarding. In our space capsule we have a father and his young teen daughter. We are given our assignments and get into our capsule. The cast member gives us one last chance to take the chicken exit. No one does. You are in a line with a panel in front of you that will drop closer once they close the doors. There is also a view screen. It is designed to look like a space shuttle capsule. There is cool air blowing on you from a jet. I know this is to keep you from hurling. We are given tasks to do during flight. I know this is to keep your brain focused. They also remind you many times not to close your eyes or to ever turn your head. You must always look straight ahead. We are waiting and waiting then we are told that there is a technical issue and we must disembark and they will move us to another capsule.

So we get out, I figure “Well at least if something is busted I would rather have a different pod.” My DB says, “That’s not it. That’s just what they said. Didn’t you see?” I’m really confused. “See what?”

Well it seems that the “technical issue” they were having was cleaning up the barf from the neighboring pod. Seems a small boy didn’t pay attention to the rules about not turning his head and BLEECCHHH.

So they give us a new pod. The console comes close to you, the cool air is blowing at you, you tip back and through your window you see sky. I breathe. Then LIFT OFF! It starts slowly and builds. It’s FUN!! Just let your mind think that what it is seeing is real. No spinning sensation. The G-forces you pull during launch at Rock & Roller Coaster are greater than this ride.

We get shot into space and all I can do is say “COOL! THIS IS SOOOOOO NEAT! WOW!” No screaming like the ads. I won’t list any spoilers, there are enough on this board if you really want them just know that you end the ride landing on Mars after a few “adventures in driving”. We are done and we lived.

I am another one that gets sick on the Teacups. Even dramamine doesn't help too much on that ride, but I do love M:S. Just be careful if you feel good riding it, the 2nd time in a row may make you feel queasy. I was a little queasy for about an hour after the 2nd time around. I will stick to doing that and Tower of Terror only once per day :) Stupid me did rockin Roller Coaster and the TOT 2 times with only about a 5 minute wait between each one. Never again!!! LOL

My experience was the same as Grumpy37's. Very intense ride. My wife waited in the gift shop for me and said most folks had a pale look on their faces.

Mission:Space is not a "spinning" ride like the Tea Cups. Think of the Tilt-A-Whirl except that the wheel doesn't tilt upright. Also, you are in an enclosed space the size of an Apollo space capsule along with two other people. This magnifies the effect because you have absolutely no perspective of the actual motion of the ride.

I liked Mission:Space but would understand why others wouldn't. Heed the advice to look forward and not lean out of your seat. Concentrating on the job you've been assigned helps, too.

I now understand why some former astronauts who have experienced Mission:Space say it is realistic.
