If a member books at the 11 month or 7 month window, but finds out later that the reservation either needs to be cancelled or changed, what happens to the points? Is there a penalty for doing any of the above?

I work contract, so I know what my busy months are. However, occasionally I will get an unexpected contract in the "dead" months. But I wouldn't normally know until 2-3 months in advance. So just wanted to get some input.

Thanks

Teresa

Are you the member?

If you cancel more than 30 days out, the points go back into your current year. So if you borrowed points, they now have to be used before your current use year expires. If you cancel less than 30 days out, the points go into a holding account and you can only use them to schedule a trip 60 days or less out.

I'm just asking hypothetical, because I want to book for early next year, but won't know my schedule til Sept. So if I book next month for Jan.2007 I just wanted to be sure I could change or cancel it if need be.

Thanks :)

It really depends on availability and your use year. If you cancel more than 31 days out, the points go back into your account, and if you aren't in the last 3 months of your use year, those points are just like they were never used and returned. If you cancel less than 30 days out, the points become reservation points. I believe those points can only be used within a 60 day period. Of course, if you call to change dates, and there is nothing available, that is a different problem. To change, you would have to cancel the original reservation and make a new one, so availability is the problem.

If you can not sure of reservations, I would not join DVC. It is not like making an reservation as a cash customer.

Why? I don't understand. DVC has a fair policy for changing/cancelling. And none of us can be "sure" of any reservation.

It really depends on your use year, the dates of your vacation and the timing of your cancellation.

If your vacation is scheduled early in your use year and you cancel at least 31 days prior to arrival, you wll be able to bank the points that were used for the cancelled vacation.

For example, let's say you have an August use year, you schedule your vaction for January. As long as you cancel the January vacation at least 31 days before it was scheduled to begin, you would have until the end of the following July to reschedule the vacation. Or you could bank up to 100% of your entire annual allotment of points if you called to do it before the end of January.

Now let's say that you scheduled your vacation for May and cancelled it in April (but still 31 days ormore in advance of arrival) At this point, you could only bank 50% of yor totoal annual allotment of points. So if you couldn't use the rest of your points by the end of July, they expire and are lost.

It gets more complicated if you made the reservation with banked or borrowed points, cancel with less than 31 days notice or have a reservation at a non-DVC option.

If you have a specific question about banking deadlines or cancellation based on your use year and vacation schedule, feel free to post again.

Best wishes -
