Cancelling DVC Reservation due to Hurricane

I have to say that if DVC is preventing bookings and modifications online I think that's a terrible decision. I get calling in if you want to have the holding removed but if that's not a concern it shouldn't matter. I'm actually not convinced it follows the POS if the resort is open to block new bookings. IF the resorts were closed that's one thing but they are not.

Since we are within 60 days and rooms all can be used for breakage, wouldn’t that cover no rooms being bookable?

I don’t think there is anything that requires them to pull back, is there, assuming they were freed up?

Good point, possibly why nothing is available

FYI:
Our scheduled trip starts Friday at BWV. I just received this via email:

Hello,

As we continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Ian, we are preparing for necessary operational adjustments based on the latest information from the National Weather Service. The hurricane may cause severe weather in the area, and for the safety of our Guests and Cast Members, we ask that you please arrive to your resort no earlier than 3 p.m. ET on Friday, Sept. 30. Guests who arrive before 3 p.m. will not be able to check in. Please feel free to reschedule your trip or cancel your stay with us; any customary cancellation fees will be waived.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and flexibility.

And also received email no check available on the 29th. Sounds like 48 hr period without check in starting 3pm on the 28th.

Hoping this will help me get a refund for my check in on 29th.

I'm here now and I think they are blocking to accommodate split stays and the people that are here right now who aren't going to be able to leave, it is a big problem. People are supposed to move resorts on Wednesday or Thursday and Disney transportation is closing down. I have a split stay and am supposed to move Thursday and now there are no check-ins on Thursday. Then they couldn't find us a room to stay where we are then they finally found us a room but said there were restrictions on our points so they couldn't do that piece and we need to call MS.

Glad they found you something. There are people posting on the DVCFan facebook that they are being given no accommodations to stay due to flight cancellations. And that was early today. Can't make new. They won't find anything etc.

It really doesn't fall within what brerakage is actually supposed to be so I'd think not. However it's getting really convoluted now that they have said they won't do any check ins on the 29th and it sounds like are straight out cancelling reservations with arrivals on that day. But the resorts are open. People there who are stuck but not being helped. People who are there and were scheduled to move but the reservation is being cancelled. It seems like Disney is creating more issues than they may be solving.

All I hope now is best of luck and stay safe to all who are there and that hopefully Disney will accommodate!

It isn't a perfect system for sure. They also aren't really cancelling reservations either they are saying you cant check in so you cancel or modify. Why they wouldn't just cancel people I don't know.

So they're sending messages stating they are cancelling the reservation and hope you'll reschedule in the future but not doing that? Didn't think it could get more crazy but if so then I've got no words for what they are doing.

Edit - and the message has changed. Shelter in place where you are.

Some of the reports I read is that they were not allowing new reservations so they could help people who were there best they could.

I think they is what I was referring to when I said they can keep the rooms.

I thought the canceling being done was only for that one day, not the whole trip, because of the shelter in place.

I am sure they will find a way to keep everyone safe!

This is what the message says

I called rental company and reservation specialist said manager would be contacting those that are scheduled to check in tomorrow. So hopefully have a good solution. They’re also trying to make sure everyone that had split stays is accounted for and has safe place.

Update- dvc rental store said they’d give a 25% credit only. Credit has to be used with dvc rental store sometime in next 2 years.

Said owner’s Point set to expire and that’s their solution.

One one hand, it’s better than nothing, you know the risk traveling this time of year.
On other hand, you can’t get there and even if you somehow did you can not check in so your room is basically cancelled without you having any choice.

Last update- after speaking, they offered me full credit.

Zero time on hold. Points returned, not in holding.

Poor cast member sounded very stressed. She said they were working from home and you could see the wind in the palm trees. She said Celebration is on the Disney power grid, so they expect to keep working tomorrow. WOW.

She would not let me modify room category, at least for now because they are not allowing new bookings. So, I guess I'm going 2BR or bust next week. She said that might change after the storm, but they don't know.

I'm really sad to cancel one of the last DVC bucket list rooms I had. The Boardwalk view 1BR. It was fun to dream... These cast members are really doing their best, may the force be with them.

Being that your reservation was for only one night and WDW has no checkins for that date, it’s kind of a grey area. It is impossible to get what you paid for. Maybe try through your credit card if booked that way. And when things settle down, I’d try to talk with the agency again. I think after covid many places added a force majeure clause where the 2 parties share the loss 50/50, in that case refund would be 50%. REad your contract and go from there. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Thankfully ours is only 1 night so not a big loss. Hate it for others that have a long trip and are unable to get to Orlando and not really sure when they’ll be able.

I did see this post from them stating there is no force majeure clause. Seems like the company really favors the dvc owners renting points out rather than the guests.

There are many reports of owners with checkin 9/29 getting their points returned. A longer reservation would get more complicated, but with a 1 night reservation that is 100% impossible/unavailable and owners reporting compensation from DVC... they should at least explain exactly why in your specific case they are unable to offer more than 25% refund.

It was difficult with the renter’s points expiring so I know that made it more complicated. It looks like they’re going to offer me a full credit I can use in the future so kudos to them. I think that’s probably right thing to do. No one is really wrong in this situation. I think if dvc gave an extension on using expiring points it could clear up the headache in this situation,

The extension of points is not that simple with DVC and if expiring, those points are most likely banked already.

I am glad to hear that you were given a credit for future use.
