can you link two magic bands to the same ticket at the same time?

Taking my son on a trip in December and he fidgets a lot with his magic bands. I didn't have trouble on his last trip with him losing it because I was vigilant but I bought him a BB8 magic band as a surprise for the upcoming trip and am still "entitled" to the free one... Can I link both of these to his pass and if (lord forbid) he does actually lose one keep the other as a backup in my purse?

Yes.
You don't have to do anything if you still have the old one, and you are using his same file in MyDisneyExperience to order his new one.

Every time a new MB is issued by Disney, it just gets ADDED to the list of old MBs (for each person in your MDE files) that ALL still will work for that same individual, interchangeably.

I have lots linked, well over a dozen - never an issue. I always carry backups on our trips just case I lose or malfunction.

If the bands are assigned to the same person you can link as many as you want. Most of mine have been deactivated by me (I can reactivate them if I want to).

I deactivated his old one from 2014 before his new free blue one gets here for 2016 because they told the the battery only lasts about 2 years and I figured it would be easier to keep track if i deactivate it now rather than when I have two of them.

That is great news though. I would carry around his AP as a backup but rather just keep a magic band in case the one he is wearing goes missing. I just don't want to have to deal with replacing it while in the parks.

Nice. it's pretty beat up too so I think the main BB8 one and the backup that will be sent to us in advance of our trip should be sufficient. I hope. He's just got issues with executive functioning and sensory issues so he will fidget and I'm afraid he will take it off and lose it. Just want a backup I can hot-swap to so there is no drama IF it happens!

He doesn't have to wear it - you can just carry it and then hand it to him when it's time to tap it to the FP tapstyle.

Yes. I currently have five linked to my pass, and just customized two more for my upcoming trip.

In addition to carrying his MB for him and or carrying a backup MB you could also just carry his park pass (thinner and easier to carry!). The park pass can be used at all the FP tap styles and of course for entrance to the theme park. We carry our passes as backup to our MB's as well as to get the discount for having an AP but I think I would do this regardless of the discount!

If you are worried about losing a band, you might also try those little rubber safety things that they use to secure Fit Bits. I haven't tried them yet, but I bought some for this year's trip.
