When you said you see nothing unethical about going to a store and making a return, do you mean that as long as a person is honest about their intent (even if the intent is to use something for a one-time event and then return it), it is ethical to at least try for a return (?). I'm still not totally sure I agree (if I understood you, that is), but I think I see your point. If the store accepts it, can we really complain?

Only on the dis do I spend this much time pondering hypothetical situations. :)

Yup, that's exactly what I'm trying to say. If the person is lying, then they are being unethical. But if a person honestly tells the store the situation, it's up to the store to decide how to handle it.
If someone walks into Wallmart and says "I've worn these flip-flops for the last 2 months, but now it's October so I want to return them" that's not unethical. Stupid, yes. A waste of time, yes. But I have a hard time seeing how it's unethical.

NOW... if someone buys a dress, knowing full well that they only intend to wear it once, sticks the tags in the neckline so as not to remove them, wears the dress all night, and goes to the store and says "I bought this last week for my daughter, but it just didn't fit her when I got it home and she tried it on." Well yeah... that's totally unethical.

And yes, it's very entertaining to realize how much of one's life is spent pondering other people's hypothetical ethical dellemma (or is that delemna) on the dis. :surfweb:

Of course you can return them if you don't like them. You may get a store credit instead of a refund, but yes ... they can be returned even if worn, as long as it's been a reasonable time since you bought them. (If you bought them three years ago and are just now getting around to wearing them, then they're yours. :) )

For those who say, "You wore them, you own them", how are you supposed to know you don't like them BEFORE you wear them? Obviously you thought they'd be fine when you tried them on, but when you actually wore them longer than the few minutes in the store, they turned out to not be the shoes you needed. So ... you return them. :confused3

As a PP said, however, don't be shy about letting the salesperson know that you wore them. In fact, you may even want to explain WHY you don't like them, since that feedback may be valuable to the folks selling them.

Is it that they were dressy shoes for a wedding that bothers some of you? Would it be different if she'd bought a pricey pair of running shoes that didn't work for her?

Typically I would agree that you are stuck with them, but at Nordstrom, they will take back without question, even if you have worn them. I have done this once there when I bought a pretty expensive pair and they just killed my feet. The saleman didn't even blink. But I wouldn't even try it at DSW or even at Macy's.

Well, I actually had that happen to me. I bought a pricey pair of sneakers at Boston Store. When I paid for them, the clerk did point to the line on the receipt that said there were no returns on shoes. The shoes seemed fine in the store and are a brand from which I own several pairs of sneakers. I also wore them at home for a bit before going on to the street with them. Unfortunately, within 15 minutes, the shoes had cut into my heels and had actually made them bleed. To me, this is a design flaw with the show and not my fault in any way.

When I tried to return them to Boston Store --with bloodstains were visible on the shoes -- they told me that their receipt says no returns on shoes and too bad, so sad. I was shocked. I argued that surely they weren't going to hold to the policy with a shoe what actually made me BLEED? Yup, they were. I walked out and have never bought another item in that store.
