Can I ask a question, Does anyone else not think "People of Walmart" is funny?

Some of the funniest stuff in life is at someone else's expense. Everyone is on the receiving end at one time or another and on the giving end at other times. I have no problem being on either. As I once heard it put, "Everyone has their time in the barrel".

If you don't find it funny don't go there, there are plenty of websites on the other end of the Intertubes.

ETA: Having a laugh at someone and even picking on them a little is not bullying. This is especially true when you are talking about strangers on the Internet who not only don't know you exist but probably don't even know they are on the site in the first place. I really hate how every time someone has a go at someone for something it is all of a sudden "bullying". It almost always is not. People need thicker skin and a little self confidence and then being in that barrel isn't so traumatizing, it is just another part of life.

For the person who asked how I'd feel if I were on that site, I wouldn't care. The second I walk outside of my house and into the largest retail chain in the world (I think it still is at least) I have given up my expectation of privacy. Heck, I've been ridiculed on this site and people know I'll see it and somehow I manage to make it through the day in tact. How ever do I manage?

Good gracious!!!!!!!!!! not everyone who dresses wonky is mentally ill or poor, they just think they look cute or want the attention.

I even went to the website and looked at my home state. a couple of these people KNEW they would get reactions with what they wore. There was even a obese lady who was in a scooter: on the back of the scooter, she had a sign: Yes' I am fat, you are ugly, but at least I can diet. Come on now, she knew what people would think with that sign, whether they think, ha ha that's funny, etc.

Excuse me, where did I say that "everyone" who dresses wonky was poor or mentally ill? I said that some may be, and not knowing which ones belong to that group makes moking them mean and plain wrong.

On the other hand, you seem to know just by looking at the pictures that "everyone thinks they look cute" ( then by all means, let's laugh at them and let them know they are not in the cruelest of ways), "or want the arrention".

Generalize much?

I said that SOME people think they look cute or want that attention. I didn't say everyone did it, but I don't blame mental illness or not enough money on a guy who wears a t shirt with poop on it. He wanted that attention, he thought he was cute or funny. Yes, some people have issues and some people may not have the best clothes, but even the thrift store has a shirt that would cover a man's hairy back. If you are buying a whole bunch of things at Walmart, you can get a cheap shirt to put on.

there are some pictures on the walmart site of people wearing either homemade sayings on their shirts or t shirts that I can't write what they say, but they knew going out wearing those shirts people would look at them and either laugh or think it was funny.

Agreed. We all go through it at some point in our lives. Speaking as a former fat kid, and a punk teenager, and a goth in the land of guidos well into my 20s, yes, I was made fun of lots. When I was dressing in an outrageously different from everyone around me manner, I expected to get stared at. On a subconscious level, that was probably part of the reason I did it in the first place. I'm sure there are still people who mock me behind my back for one reason or another. Guess how much I care? And guess what 2-word response they get if they say anything to my face? :thumbsup2

I'm glad to know there are so many others who don't like those pictures! I never have either even though I keep getting the emails from my MIL.

Just don't like ridicule.

Having decided to do some serious social research on the topic, I went to the PoWM.com and after laboriously studying over 160 pages I have come to this highly scientific conclusion. It is freaking hilarious.

It's not mean to give attention to a group of people that are obviously crying, not not crying, SCREAMING out for attention. In a lot of these cases, the only thing that is deserved is ridicule. It's not funny if someone is fat, for example, but if you make a conscience decision to go out in public with most of it exposed, then one of two things have happened. 1. You have all your non-revealing cloths in the laundry and you didn't have time to get them done before the sale on Doritos ends, or 2. you just don't care what you look like and have the added perk of being noticed and making the statement...I like polluting your line of vision. :rotfl:

Seriously, I'm sure that many depicted do have some mental illness issues, but that is the reason not the excuse. Most just plain have no class, or self respect or social awareness. It doesn't matter what the reason, it is a good way for the rest of us to feel good about ourselves. They obviously do not care what they look like or if we have to see it, so why should we care if that particular personality trait is exploited for our entertainment. They are displaying themselves for all of us to see, witness and be shocked by...that's what they intended and that's what they got.

I seriously doubt if any of those highly sophisticated folk have a computer and surf it for Walmart related sites, so I wouldn't worry to much about them feeling "bullied" (not the same thing anyway). That's what happens when you have no education, no desire to improve and no problem with living off the taxpayer. Seems. like we should at least be able to see where our money is going and not be made to feel guilty about it.

And I don't!

Laughing at children......

When my DD was three her favorite outfit consisted of a random t shirt (non matching), a pair of rainbow striped shorts and a pair of pink and green rubber garden books.

One day when she had that fab get up on, I took her to a store. As we were walking through the store I noticed a clerk laughing as she walked by. Guess what? I laughed too. The child looked ridiculous. :rotfl2:

Multiply that by 100 times when it is an adult. OMG!

I am fat...not insulting myself, just stating a fact. As a fat person, I am very mindful of what I wear and how it fits. If I were to go to Wal Mart in a tank top and daisy dukes, I would expect my picture to show up on this website. Most of these people know what they are doing and just don't care, so why would they care if they showed up on some random website.

I don't go to the site often, but went again when this thread came up.

There seems to be a trend of crazier and crazier outfits.

Kind of like the horrible Idol singers who want their 15 minutes of fame, it appears that there are people who are actively trying to get their picture in poWM.com.

And the perfectly coiffed and made up young woman who was wearing spiked heels, skin tight shorts with the zipper purposely all the way down since the sides were artfully folded to the sides to show more underwear (thank goodness she was wearing underwear) was not homeless and not mentally ill. Since she was perfectly coiffed, she obviously was paying attention to detail. It was just her version of the details that would raise one's eyebrows.

Some of it is regional though. I saw one picture from my state (yes I check my state to see if there is anybody I know) making fun of a neon ski jumpsuit. I couldn't see anything wrong with it as it was pretty norm for the slopes in our state. Obviously the picture taker was not from our area otherwise they would have not blinked an eye at the ski outfit

I just saw this website for the first time today at work. I checked my email at work today to find a bunch of pics from that site in it that someone sent. I apparently must live under a rock because I've never really been familar with it. For those who don't know, it's a website where people take pictures of total strangers they see at Walmart & then post them on the website so everyone can make fun of their clothing choice or how heavy they are.

The thing is, I seem to be the ONLY person who thinks this is so cruel. I checked out the site & it's not just "funny clothing" they're making fun of, I've seen people making fun of the eldery for missing teeth, an elderly man for being hunched over, & the comments are shocking. I mean there's one where they're making fun of an overweight child & these grown adults are calling the kid fattie & making cruel jokes. I never really considered myself an overly sensitive person but I kid you not 99% of the people I know all think this website is the greatest on earth. I feel horrible for these people though, I mean I may not agree w/ their choice of style but to make fun of them for the world to see? It just seems so horrible to me :sad2: Just out of curiousity, does anyone else not find this site funny?

I'm with you. I don't find it funny to make fun of other people! Why has society become totally insensitive to other peoples feelings?

Listen I laugh and could be laughed at... I've visited Wal-Mart after teaching my aerobics classes... (Still in my gear).. I must look a fright:scared1:

I think its funny, If I am needing a good chearing up or need to laught I get on there, and fail blog :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: I would never intentionally laught at someone in public but nothing wrong with letting it out at home.

It's funny and honestly people need to lighten up a bit. Just like awkward family photo.

Awkwardfamilyphoto is hilarious :rotfl:

Sure. My picture is on Facebook, too - and it's funny. Not as funny as the last one, but still.

BUT! I put it there!!!! That's a HUGE difference from being judged by a stranger to be so odd-looking or oddly dressed that THEY take your photograph and post it on a site of which the SOLE purpose is for people to laugh and deride.

I was talking about pictures of me that others have posted, so no there isn't any difference.

Don Rickles is my life role model, so, yes, it is funny. Very funny. Very very funny.
If we can't laugh at ourselves, our society has reached a very low point.

BECOME? We've never BEEN sensitive to other people's feelings.

That said I LOVE it. Cracks me up. Makes me feel a little more sane in this insane world.

And for those people who think it's mean you are gonna sit here and tell me you've never been at a mall, store, park, any other public place and seen someone who looked ridiculous or was doing something ridiculous and didn't even chuckle?

Maybe if we put the "girl who dared apply deodorant in public" on display you'd have something to laugh at.

There's not really a "We've" when it comes to being sensitive w/ society. It's more of a dividing factor, there are many of us who see nothing wrong w/ laughing at strangers & there's people like me who feel sympathy for the person everyone is laughing about behing their back. I've never in my entire life come across someone doing something goofy & had the urge to stop & take pics to post on an internet site for complete strangers to make fun of. It's not these individuals putting their pics up, it's people w/ a Holier-than-thou attitude who think that just because someone dresses goofy, they deserve to be ridiculed publicly behind the safety of their computer screen. I can take a joke but the site (especially the COMMENTS people leave) sound like a bunch of sadistic bullies.
